Series: The Chase
Jesus told his disciples “follow me
The word disciple means, “learner or pupil
In order to be a disciple of Jesus, we have learn His teachings, and that means we have to be present!
Can you learn something without being present?
In January we will be in this series to look at some obstacles we need to remove in order to Chase Jesus!
Open Bibles to Luke 10:38

1. Afternoon Coffee

** Student reads the passage **
Luke 10:38–42 ESV
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

The Characters

Jesus
Mary
Martha

The Setting

Luke 10:38 ESV
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.
To Martha’s Credit:
Martha’s House - note it says that Martha welcomed Him into her house.
Martha’s House - note it says that Martha welcomed Him into her house.
Jesus didn’t come alone when He traveled; He at least had his 12 disciples in tow, possible more.
It doesn’t seem that this afternoon drop-in was planned

2. To Serve or Not Serve?

Luke 10:39–40 ESV
39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.”
Luke 10

2 Perspectives:

Jesus is here, I need to do as much as I can now and make this look amazing!
Jesus is here, I need to spend as much time as I can while He’s here!
The overambitious host - the ask you every 2 minutes if you need something else, they have 10 options for everything (drinks, fork, bathroom)
In this moment I can see Martha so stressed about taking care of everyone in the house, and everyone has their eyes and ears fixed on the wisdom of Jesus.
These are not chores:
Mary would’ve had her chores done - she had her affairs in order
Mary wasn’t trying to go above and beyond, over the top to make an impression on Jesus
In her humble position at His feet she made the greatest impression in the room - someone willing to stop their agenda and listen to Jesus’ agenda!

The Issue:

The issue is that Martha is distracted. Her actions of service are not the problem at hand, its that her focus was more on the serving than on Jesus!
Martha’s issues wasn’t her sister Mary
If we aren’t careful, it’s easy for us to slip in Martha’s mindset:
working and serving so much that we forget to sit at the feet of the one we are serving!

Thinking that all the works we do get us any closer to Heaven is a mistake:
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Jesus Response:

Luke 10:41–42 ESV
41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:
Martha’s decision to serve rather than sit at the feet of Jesus led to more issues for her:
Anxiety or lack of peace in her life

The One Thing:

Notice in Jesus response He doesn’t tell Martha that her work and service is not valued - He shows us that service is of great value, but it’s not the most important
Psalm 27:4 ESV
4 One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.
The Rich Young Ruler: He followed every line of the law but was unable to separate from his riches, meaning he wasn’t able to separate from his self-made security.
(the riches aren’t the problem, but the heart behind them)
Luke 18:22 ESV
22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
Paul describes leaving all his righteous actions behind him for one thing
Philippians 3:13–14 ESV
13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
In all these things, the most important thing is that we have a solid relationship with Jesus Christ - our only way of redemption!

3. Which Person Are You?

Mary: those who know how to serve and also sit at Jesus Feet
Martha: those who serve diligently, and with the best intention serve God, but forget to add the one thing, a continued focus on Jesus
The Neithers: they dont do either, they aren’t even in the same house as Jesus because they are off pursuing their own goals

Tips to Sit

Be Ready: put yourself in a position to hear Jesus
put yourself in a position to hear Jesus
just like playing blind guidance, you have to tune into the right voice
Tune into a radio station
Running the same play in sports
Submit: take control of your thoughts and actions based on God’s Word
stop playing defense when you get spiritually attacked and set the course of your life daily
instead of trying to memorize scripture to combat attacks, let’s go on the offense and start your day by declaring God’s words over your day
NIKE: Just Do It!
don’t just talk or plan to change your relationship with Jesus this year, do it!
