The story of Ruth begins when Elimilech who takes his family out of Bethlehem and to the town of Moab.
Him and his family likely knew who Yahweh was and they would have been familiar with God’s laws and the Pentateuch.
Both sons marry unbelieving Moabite women, ruth and Orpah, but then the father and both sons die, leaving all the women alone. With the tragedy the mother, Naomi, tells both daughter-in-laws to turn back and go to their families, while she will return to Bethlehem.
Both young ladies upon marrying into this family lived together and both have an opportunity to turn their backs on Moab. Both have an opportunity in Bethlehem to be surrounded by God’s people and away from idolatry. Instead Orpah decides to go back to her mother and father. She likely leaves the only believer of Yahweh to then return to Moab.

In many ways this was most of my life. I was raised in a Hindu home. My parents tried to teach us the religious traditions with the expectation that we would carry them on.
This was their identity and they wanted it to be ours too, but I never fully believed in the gods, the stories, and the rituals. But without knowing what else to believe in and feeling secure in denying my parents belief, I continued to force myself to believe in Hinduism.
The first time I heard the Gospel was when I 16 years old from 2 friends to shared with me. They described in such detail their relationship with Christ and also His love for them. Although, I didn’t doubt their testimony, I chose to return and follow false gods.
