In order to have a biblical worldview we must understand biblically the well known saying “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”.
Title- Words Of Life And Death
Passage- 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Attention-
I remember once needing to change a fuse in a car we owned.
You know, one of the newer ones where they are all a bunch of different colors and numbers and you have no idea what goes with what...
Now, in order to figure out which fuse to change I did not run into the house and grab one of our cookbooks.
I did not grab a dictionary
I did not grab one of our children’s school books.
Now, in their right use are these book important?
But what did I really need
The owners manual
I needed to know from the ones who designed and built the vehicle how they built it and where they put certain fuses.
The person that wrote our cookbook does not tell us in any recipe where to find the fuses on our car.
That only comes from the one who designed and built it.
There are other books that society deems important
The Origin of the Species- By Darwin
The Complete Works of Shakespeare
The Meaning of Relativity- Einstein
The Republic by Plato
These books all hold a place within human history but they are unlike the Bible
Introduction
What is the main driving point (CPS)?
Friends, the Bible is unlike any other book throughout all history
Why does the CPS matter, what is the consequence?
These works are written by man...
They are not the inspired words of the Creator of the universe
Because God designed and created…and even keeps this world in existence make the book He has written by way of inspiring men makes this book distinct from all other books in history.
Paul makes note of several distinctions in this verse in 2 Timothy
Transition
The first distinction we notice is that....
I. God’s Word declares God to us (16)
I. God’s Word declares God to us (16)
Explain
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God
There has been much said about these few words over the centuries
I want us to notice something a bit different
The driving point of Scripture being God breathed is that God has declared Himself to us...
Yes, it teaches inspiration
Yes, it teaches the intimacy of the message
But I htink sometimes we throw the baby out with the bathwater
I think we get tied up in the details of how God has spoken to us and forget that it id GOD who has spoken
As we looked at last week…the God who created everything, the sun moon and stars...
Every creature…every plant…the earth, the mountains…the seas
All of it
The galaxy....
Bridge to today
I skipped over this illustration last week so I will use it this week.
Earth is 93 million miles from the sun
That distance is for this illustration equal to the thickness of a piece of paper.
Our galaxy is represented by a stack of paper 310 miles high
310 miles of paper each piece of paper representing 93 million miles!!!!!
WOW!
The entire known universe is a stack of paper 31 million miles high
Thats 31 million miles of paper each representing 93 million miles.
Our great God (open arms) spoke it into existence.
Relevance
That is who has spoken to us!!!!
The God of all creation gave to us this book with an important message for us
Why does this matter?
The God who breathed life into creation breathed life into this book and gave it to us
So aside from the importance of the author…is there anything else important about this book?
Transition
A second distinction is that.....
II. God’s Word declares to us what truth is (16)
II. God’s Word declares to us what truth is (16)
Explain
Profitable for:
Doctrine
What exactly is doctrine?
Reproof
a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a Church, political party, or other group
THis could be a religious group, ad political party, an activist group...
It really boils down to what a group teaches about what they find important
Bridge to today
Some people today see the environment as the most important and therefore they teach others their view on all things environmental…the share their doctrine
Political groups proclaim their doctrine
And so on...
Relevance
The Bible tells us the truth about God, His creation, and how to get right with God and how to stay right with God
But at its most basic level the Bible tells us what truth is
Why does this matter?
This is important because our flesh and the devil are trying to deceive us and lead us away from God.
The Bible reveals the Devil as the father of lies
And in
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
But there is one place we can go and KNOW what we find will be true…The Bible
Transition
The third distinction of the bible is that.....
III. God’s Word declares to us what righteousness is (16)
III. God’s Word declares to us what righteousness is (16)
Explain
Is profitable for:
As we saw, doctrine…or what is true
It is also profitable for:
Reproof- Telling us what is sin
Telling us what is morally wrong
Correction- It gives us the remedy for sin
Not just that Jesus died to forgive our sins
But that we can walk each day in newness of life
Instruction in righteousness- The Bible teaches us how to live
How to not only get right but how to stay right.
Bridge to today
There are a lot of book today that are trying to tell us how to live
What makes the Bible so much different?
The author is the Creator
God made us
He knows us
He knows what is best for us
All we know is what makes us feel good
God knows what ultimately is good
Relevance
Why does this matter?
The importance of this book is that the final end of the work of the Word of God is that (17) we may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Conclusion
Review of the Principles and the Sermon Proposition
The Bible declares to us the Creator
It declares to us what is truth
It teaches us what is moral
And it teaches us how to live a moral life
Challenge to act now (your part)…immanence
Visualize Audience Implementation
But I what to stress here that none of this matters if you do not believe and accept it
And more importantly
If you do not accept the free gift of salvation provided by the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross of Calvary.
If you don’t believe these truths then they are important but in a different perspective
Then you are yet in your sins
That means you need to pay the price to an eternal God for rejecting that free gift of Jesus
That means that you need to be to spend an eternity form the creator in hell
The destination is not the focus here
It is the separation vs the reconciliation
The truth that that longing in your soul can finally be satisfied
That part of you that is missing can be filled
That is what makes the Bible distinct from all other books
God breathed life into it.
God gave us His Word and writing it He gives to us the truths of life and the cure for death
We need to respond like Peter in
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
Those words are found here, in this book
This book has the truths of life, sin, death, eternity...
Final Statement
This book is a matter of life and death
