The Need For a Better Sacrifice (1-4)

RS: Sin, of course, is man’s greatest problem. No matter what kind of religion a man has, if it cannot deal with sin, it is of no value. By nature, man is a sinner; and by choice, he proves that his nature is sinful. It has well been said, “We are not sinners because we sin. We sin because we are sinners.”

The Need For a Better Sacrifice (1-4)

Hebrews 10:1–4 ESV

For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

EX: Religious Action couldn’t save

The Hebrews had kept the law

The offered the required sacrifices and added extra protecitons

In spite of their activity, they couldn’t be made perfect

It wasn’t sufficient

It had to repeated because they kept sinning

They were reminded year by year o their sin nature

That was the point of the sacrifice

The blood of animals never could and never will be able to take away sin.

We have many modern traditions of worship

Even though we may do them fervently and repeatedly, they are likewise inadequate to redeem us.

The Provision of the Better Sacrifice (5-9)

Hebrews 10:5–9 ESV

Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’ ” When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second.

EX: God prepared a better sacrifice

Jesus’ body was prepared by the Father

We just celebrated the Advent

HE came as God with us

John 1:14 ESV

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

HE became flesh so that He could die on our behalf.

The incarnation of Christ is a BIG deal

The Effectiveness of the Better Sacrifice (v. 10)

Hebrews 10:10 ESV

And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

EX: Christ sanctifies once for all

It happened 1 time

He only had to come 1 time to deal with sin

He never has to repeat it

It is good for all

What Jesus did on the cross is good for all who believe and repent.

He satisfied God’s demands

He did all the work that is ever necessary to redeem fallen humanity

AP: There is no sacrifice which can compare

How arrogant it is of us to assume we could ever possibly earn God’s forgiveness.

All the good we do, can’t undo our sin.

We are constantly adding to our sin debt.

We cannot undo the bad we do.

He paid the price we could not pay.

Since we couldn’t pay for our sins, He paid for them.

The Finality of the Sacrifice (11-18)

Hebrews 10:11–18 ESV

And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

There is no longer an offering for sin

He died and there is no need for more.

Now, He is in heaven

right hand of God

Awaiting time to come get us

Spirit bears witness with us

writes law on our heart.

writes law on our minds

Conclusion:

Jesus died, once for all, the just for the unjust.
