WHAT IS THE GREATEST STORY YOU HAVE EVER READ?
WHAT IS THE GREATEST STORY YOU HAVE EVER READ?
GREATEST MOVIE YOU HAVE EVER WATCHED
What is the greatest story you have ever heard?
The greatest movie you have ever watched?
The most powerful song that has ever moved you?
Every story ever told finds its origin in His Story
There is One Great Story, because there is one Great Story Teller.
All stories find their place, their meaning, their purpose in the one great story of God.
It is in HIS story that we find OUR STORY
Exodus tells this great story.
A story about a God who Acts
About a God who acts in History
A story about
About a God who redeems his people
About a God who is there and is calling to you to trust him.
14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
Exodus isn’t just ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED,
Every book ever written, every song ever sung, every movie ever made, every poem ever put into prose, every painting ever painted, finds its origin in God’s story.
it is about what HAS BEEN HAPPENING since the creation of the world.
There is one great story, because there is one great story teller.
It is in his story that we will find our story.
STORY MANTRA
Exodus is the greatest story ever told.
Exodus isn’t just about what happened, it is about what has been happening since the creation of the world.
In every story there is a villain, in every story there is conflict, suffering, uncertainty.
In every story there is good and evil.
But In every story there is a Hero.
It is engrained into our very being. We long for rescue, for reprieve from suffering, for freedom at last.
But there is one true hero. One to whom all heroes point.
Every book ever written, every song ever sung, every movie ever made, every poem ever put into prose, every painting ever painted, WHISPERS HIS NAME
THE KING ABOVE EVERY KING
THE LORD ABOVE EVERY LORD
THE NAME ABOVE EVERY NAME.
SO THAT
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Exodus is not only their story, but it is our story, because we are all apart of His Story.
Exodus is not only their story, but it is our story, because we are all apart of His Story.
For all things are “from him, and through him and To Him”
That the name of JESUS might be lifted high.
And at the name of JESUS all people would be delivered from darkness
made anew in HIM.
WELCOME TO ONE HOPE CHURCH
WELCOME TO ONE HOPE CHURCH
NAME, WELCOME
This is why we are studying the book of Exodus.
The Exodus is the most significant event in the OT
The Exodus is the most significant event in the OT
It is referred back to in the OT over and over again.
Yet it points to the NT and the ULTIMATE EXODUS IN JESUS CHRIST.
Exodus is not only their story, but it is our story, because we are all apart of His Story.
It is constantly pointed back to.
Example: I am the God who rescued you from Egypt.”
It was for my name’ sake that I acted.
Will you take the journey with us as we look at the story of God’s people?
You will find yourselves in them.
We will find our story within their story.
You see God isn’t done acting.
He’s not done acting through One Hope Church.
WE HAVE A MISSION
WE HAVE A MISSION
We have a mission to declare the Hero of Heroes to the nations.
There is only One Savior and his name is Jesus
And it is in him that we find out HOPE in this life and the next.
God’s vision is to see the City, Nations and Generations find their hope in JESUS.
OUR 2020 VISION
OUR 2020 VISION
This is our 2020 vision and beyond.
To do that we are called to lift up his name through SERMON, SERVICE and SUFFERING
We are called to make disciples that love and live like Jesus.
This is our mission for 2020 and beyond.
Will you be a part of God’s work.
God is still redeeming!

GOD’S STORY
GOD’S STORY
1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. 6 Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. 7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.

This an ODD WAY to start a book
You’d be right
But what we REALIZE about the Bible is it is one continuous story
The Bible was THE FIRST GREAT Netflix Series. Seasons 1-66
Before there was Breaking Bad, The Office, or Stranger Things there was the Story of God
Exodus is just SEASON 2 of that Story.
This text is almost exactly
This intro is kind of a Recap of Season 1
Then a short introduction to season 2.
So what happened in Season 1 of the Bible?
Genesis traces the creation story, the great flood and humanity reset, the choosing of Abraham by God and the story of his descendents. The story ends with the incredible journey of Joseph and how the people of Israel ended up in Egypt in the first place.
BTW Stephen in the Book of Acts Chapter 7, gives a great RECAP of Genesis
It’s in the Reading plan
Q: What’s the point?
You came to where you are because of your past.
GOD HAS A PLAN.
The events in the Bible are not just a bunch of random stories
The form a long narrative, GOD IS WRITING A STORY
Exodus is connected to Genesis and Leviticus but as we will see it is also connected to the New Testament.
The point is:
THE STORY IS NOT ABOUT YOU.
IT IS GOD’S STORY THAT IS BEING WRITTEN
AND THE STORY OF YOUR LIFE IS WRITTEN INTO HIS STORY
It is part of a bigger story.
HE WRITES THE BEST STORIES
IN-FACT, IT ONLY MAKES SENSE IN HIS STORY.
You came to where you are because of your past.
OBEDIENCE DOES NOT EQUAL EASE
OBEDIENCE DOES NOT EQUAL EASE
CULTURAL TIE IN:
We have been taught to think it is all about us.
We have been taught to think it is all about us.
But it is not.
But al
But we end up starring in some low budget film
B/C it’s not about us, we don’t get to write our stories
But we get to be a walk on part to God’s Broadway production.
B/C it’s not about us, we don’t get to write our stories
When we walk with God we don’t achieve our story, we receive our story.
Let’s see how this plays out in Ancient Israel
OBEDIENCE DOES NOT EQUAL EASE
OBEDIENCE DOES NOT EQUAL EASE
7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.
8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.
Exodus 1:
Exdous 1:7
6 Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. 7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.
English Standard Version Chapter 1
8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
“Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.”
Uh-oh, that doesn’t sound good.
“ And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us.
And so the enslavement and abuse of God’s people begins.
THE CHARACTERS: TWO OPPOSING FORCES
THE CHARACTERS: TWO OPPOSING FORCES
Those who DO NOT KNOW GOD — pharoah and Egyptians
2 But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”
2. Those who do know God and WORSHIP HIM - Moses and Isreal
Those who DO KNOW GOD & WORSHIP HIM - Moses and Isreal
Those who do know God and WORSHIP HIM - Moses and Isreal
2 But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”
This thread goes throw the whole first half of Exodus.
THE PLOT
THE PLOT
Now this is the opposite of what you would expect at this point.
When we left Genesis all thingsWERE GOING WELL
In we read “They were fruitful and multiplied”
7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.
This Echoe’s , as God’s command.
So they were doing what God called them to do.
Shouldn’t they expect blessing?
Isn’t this often how we feel?
Wait…I’ve been doing all the right things…it should work out!
But this is life in an FALLEN & BROKEN WORLD
life walking with God often doesn’t look like we expect, not how we would write our own story
life walking with God often doesn’t look like we expect, not how we would write our own story
Because of that, when things don’t meet our expectations there are three temptations we face.
THREE TEMPTATIONS IN SUFFERING
THREE TEMPTATIONS IN SUFFERING
Doubt God
Doubt God
Disobey God
Disown God
#1 DOUBTING GOD
#1 DOUBTING GOD
The first thing we do is begin to doubt God’s power or God’s Goodness
This is the enemies doing.
Genesis 3
#2 DISOBEY GOD
#2 DISOBEY GOD
The 2nd thing we do is begin to take things into our own hands.
If God won’t do it, then I will
Example: Isaac & Ishmael.
#3 DISOWN GOD
#3 DISOWN GOD
If we persist in these first two and our heart continues to harden
Eventually we do away with God all together.
This the most dangerous position to be in.
Where are you in these three?
This is PHAROAH
his HEARD is HARDENED — eventually leads to his undoing.
SIN HARDENS OUR HEARTS
So if you are walking down this path be wary.
WHERE IS YOUR HOPE?
WHERE IS YOUR HOPE?
It is in God’s Movement.
14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
WE NEED HELP
WE NEED HELP
And so we CALL upon God, rather than ACCUSE God.
HOLY SPIRIT
19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
9 And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
ARE YOU CRYING OUT TO GOD IN YOUR DISTRESS OR JUST COMPLAINING TO HIM?
PERSONAL STORY:
Difficulties we face, always turn to God eventually.
GODLY RESPONSE TO SUFFERING
GODLY RESPONSE TO SUFFERING
Q: WHAT IS A GODLY RESPONSE TO SUFFERING?
23 During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God.
#1 LAMENT
#1 LAMENT
LAMENT
We need to Call God into our suffering
Afterall, he is somehow Good and all Powerful
We are never promised to understand that, nor could we
But God promises to be with us wherever we are.
Only two directions to run in our distress:
TOWARDS God or AWAY from God
Which way are you running?
What is God’s Remedy for Suffering?
GOD WRITES THE BETTER STORY.

In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.
God’s people are persevering at this point.
As is often with God’s people, when they are persecuted they not only endure, but they multiply
the enemy will cause suffering, bitterness, strive
See book of Acts
Yet the people are crying out to God.
the enemy will cause suffeirng, bitterness, strive
God is writing a story of redemption and in that we find our hope.
the enemy will cause suffeirng, bitterness, strive

What is God’s Remedy for Suffering?
GOD’S REMEDY FOR SUFFERING — A SUFFERING SUBSTITUTE
GOD’S REMEDY FOR SUFFERING — A SUFFERING SUBSTITUTE
#2 REMEMBER
#2 REMEMBER
The second thing we need in order to suffer in a Godly way is remember who God is and what he has done.
Q: HOW DO I DO THIS?
ANS: REMEMBER what GOD HAS DONE and WHO GOD IS
They were crying out to the GOD OF ABRAHAM, ISAAC AND JACOB
They new the STORY OF GENESIS
A GOD WHO CALLED OUT ABRAHAM.
REST OF OT — REMEMBER THE EXODUS
AFTER THE NT — REMEMBER THE CROSS, THE GREATER EXODUS
In our Day it is remembering the Cross — the greater exodus.
The Point of Exodus: We have a God who acted decisively in history for our deliverance.
The Point of Exodus: We have a God who acted decisively in history for our deliverance.
God has not left his people, he never leaves his people.
REMEMBER THAT GOD LOVES YOU.
When suffering comes our way…when expectations of our life are not met we start to think:
1 john 4:
18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
Q: Is God punishing me?
In our suffering, we can be assured that God is not punishing us, b/c God punished Christ in our place
Love conquers fear.
13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
19 We love because he first loved us.
10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
God loves us and the Cross proves it.
So if you are doubting, disobeying or tempted to disown God, remember that Jesus death is our PROOF OF GOD’S LOVE.
We can doubt, but we cannot doubt the cross.
The Cross is our Only Hope
God is still writing the story.
#3 PERSEVERE
#3 PERSEVERE
The third thing way we embrace godly suffering is to persevere.
But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.
At this point in the story all we know is things are getting worse for God’s people.
We do this by:
Lamenting - keeping God near
Remembering - who he is.
Together, in his power (holy spirit), by faith following His Word (Jesus)
But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.
As is often with God’s people, when they are persecuted they not only endure, but they multiply
See book of Acts
Q: HOW DO WE PERSEVERE?
WE LAMENT — KEEPING GOD NEAR
WE REMEMBER — WHO GOD IS AND WHAT HE HAS DONE
Lamenting - keeping God near
WE TRUST HIS STORY
WE DO THIS TOGETHER.
We persevere by
Remembering - who he is.
Together, in his power (holy spirit), by faith following His Word (Jesus)
As is often with God’s people, when they are persecuted they not only endure, but they multiply
See book of Acts
being TOGETHER, in the POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, by FAITH, FOLLOWING HIS WORD — JESUS
By Faith, we follow Jesus WHATEVER THE COST.
EXAMPLE: MLK + CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
MLK Jr day
At this point in the EXODUS all we know is things are getting worse for God’s people.
Those who seek to live according to his word.
HISTORY OF PERSECUTION OF GOD’S PEOPLE.
Over the centuries and even up into our own day in our own culture.
12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
This is every increasing in our culture.
As God’s word increasingly comes under attack, we will suffer if we remain true to Jesus.
EXAMPLE: MLK + CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
MLK Jr day
RESPONSE
RESPONSE
HOW WILL YOU (ARE YOU) RESPONDING TO SUFFERING?
LAMENT
REMEMBER
PERSEVERE
TOGETHER, IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, BY FAITH FOLLOWING GOD’S WORD.
WE GROW BY
GODS WORD
GODS SPIRIT
lament, remember, together following Jesus.
