“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.
Refers back to :
No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.
“Revealed your name” includes all that consists of one’s character. Revealed means manifested, make visible, made clear.
There are Old Testament ties to
Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.
John points also to
“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
It is a fulfillment of the biblical prophecy found in
Isaiah
Therefore my people will know my name;
therefore in that day they will know
that it is I who foretold it.
Yes, it is I.”
Jesus is praying for those already chosen by God. They belonged to the Father because He chose them and entrusted them to the care of Jesus.
What a blessed assurance to be chosen by God and then entrusted with the care of Jesus.
This is the beginning of the evidence of the care of Jesus. He provides much evidence in the care for His disciples:
The Disciples are prayed for before He chose them.
Luke
One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.
He prayer for them during His ministry.
Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
Matthew 14:23
After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
Prayed for them at the end of His ministry
John 17:6
“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
Continuing to pray for them in heaven
Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
Hebrews
Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.
What does this mean?
The disciples had come to the conviction that Jesus was God’s messenger and that all He taught was God’s truth.
For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
It is one thing to be given something, and another thing to accept it. Jesus gave them the words of His Father, and the disciples accepted. LAMBANO is the Greek word. A better meaning of this might be acquired it or obtained possession of it.
When they did this, they disputed the words of those who had claims against Jesus.
“Certainty” comes from the Greek word ALETHOS and it means really, surely. It is the same word as TRULY in
Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Matthew 1
I Thessalonians
And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.
“Believed” means truly committed to.
I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.
Why do you think Jesus made this distinction? Jesus is prayer specifically for His disciples here. Cross reference:
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.
Everything the Son has belongs to the Father. This is restated from
All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
How did glory come to Jesus through the disciples?
Bearing much fruit
This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
Believing in Him
Accepting and obeying His words
Carrying out His commission
Can Jesus say that about us? Will our obedience and service bring glory to God?
What a marvelous incentive that is to know that we have the ability through our obedience and service to bring glory to the One who has everything!
I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one.
Jesus shows in His prayer that He is leaving the world. He highlights His passion in coming to the Father. How will His departure come?
His death
His resurrection
His ascension
He emphasizes that the disciples will remain. Why do you think He does this?
HOLY FATHER helps to show the view of God but also the intimacy we can share with Him.
IN YOUR NAME shows the manifestation of God’s character and His might.
May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
the righteous run to it and are safe.
Jesus prays that the disciples would be separated from the world of dangers as they continue to live among hostile neighbors. He asks that they would become one as He and the Father are one.
Why is this unity so important?
Unity among the disciples is necessary for the sake of the mission.
While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
Jesus kept the disciples safe by His presence. He guided them and prevented them from wandering into danger. He kept them from wandering away. He had them under His eye and care. He gave them sound instruction, performed miracles before their eyes. Jesus asks His Father to keep them safe in His name.
What does this imply?
They are weak and cannot make it on their own.
They are valuable and worth God keeping them in His hands.
They are saved as righteous and are reserved for bliss.
They have been cared for by the Lord and like the Good Shepherd, He longs for them to remain safe.
“None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction…” Who does this refer to? Some translations call this the “son of perdition.”
“I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.’
This is a quote from
Even my close friend, whom I trusted,
he who shared my bread,
has lifted up his heel against me.
Psalm
The word destruction comes from the Greek word APOLEIA. In the New Testament, it always refers to eternal destruction:
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
Romans
What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction?
Philippians 1:28
without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.
Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.
Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
2 Thessalonians
People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.
1 Timothy
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.
But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.
In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come.
The beast who once was, and now is not, is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.
“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.
One translation says BE DELIGHTED. This is the second time Jesus spoke of His Joy. The first time was in :
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
Do you think this was spoken/prayed in a way the disciples could hear? He did this another time in :
I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”
We learn later that the disciples did indeed experience joy.
The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.
Jesus wants His disciples to experience His joy and the Father’s joy. This joy was intended for the eaves-dropping disciples who were listening to His prayer and for those that would read of it centuries later.
By the way, joy is the mark of the kingdom in Old Testament prophecy.
The desert and the parched land will be glad;
the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.
Like the crocus,
Isaiah
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
You will go out in joy
and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills
will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
will clap their hands.
Paul spoke of this joy also:
Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you.
Philippians
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
Philippians
My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.
John 17:15
Jesus wants them to be able to withstand and overcome the conflict that the world gives. Jesus would be removed, but His followers would stay. There are other Biblical examples of this:
Daniel in Babylon ()
Caesar’s household ()
Christians should not take themselves out of the world but remain in meaningful contact with it, trusting in God’s protection as we witness for Him.
They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
D. A. Carson wrote: “The followers of Jesus are permitted neither the luxury of compromise with the world that is intrinsically evil and under the devil’s power nor the safety of disengagements.”
God is capable of providing the safety. This is a repeat of verse 14. The paves the way for prayer that follows.
Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
Sanctify means to set apart for sacred, to make holy.
Constantly used in the Old Testament to show full dedication to God of both things and people.
Exodus 28:41
After you put these clothes on your brother Aaron and his sons, anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them so they may serve me as priests.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
“This is what you are to do to consecrate them, so they may serve me as priests: Take a young bull and two rams without defect.
Sacrifice a bull each day as a sin offering to make atonement. Purify the altar by making atonement for it, and anoint it to consecrate it.
Exodus 29:
Then dress Aaron in the sacred garments, anoint him and consecrate him so he may serve me as priest.
Exodus
“Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect the sacred offerings the Israelites consecrate to me, so they will not profane my holy name. I am the Lord.
“Say to them: ‘For the generations to come, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean and yet comes near the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the Lord, that person must be cut off from my presence. I am the Lord.
Leviticus
If a person is sanctified, set apart for God’s work, that person will do only what God wants and hate all that God hates.
I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves about on the ground. I am the Lord who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.
Leviticus
for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
The means of sanctification is found in TRUTH. Truth is found in God’s word.
The Word is Christ.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Therefore, sanctification is becoming more and more like Christ.
For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
Jesus was sent to carry out the work the Father gave Him to do. In turn, Jesus sent out the disciples to continue that work which he started.
Sent means that He was on a mission.
I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
Matthew 10:15
The full terms of this mission would come after the resurrection:
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
The work of Christ will be finished at the moment of His death.
And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
2 Corinthians
A true disciple is a true missionary.
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
