That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
First Section 1:1-4
Pronouns:
The “we” is the apostles.
“You” refers to these recipients- those who have heard the gospel message.
“Our” is trickier. I think the first “our” is the apostles. And the second one is both.
This does not mean there are multiple writers of this book. This paragraph is referring to the proclaiming of the Word of Life. Which indicates that he wants people to remember what they were originally told.
Amplification of heard, seen, looked upon touched emphasises the witness of a really walking talking Jesus who did marvels and revealed the word of life.
What is the Word of Life: Gospel of which Christ is the nucleus. Even though I know “The Word” in John refers specifically to Christ.
Two purposes stated for the gospel message. “These things” are still talking about the apostolic witness. Fellowship with God. Complete Joy.
