I know how to FIX it!
I know how to FIX it!
When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Then Jesus said to them, “You will all become deserters because of me this night; for it is written,
‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
But after I am raised up, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” Peter said to him, “Though all become deserters because of you, I will never desert you.” Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” Peter said to him, “Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And so said all the disciples.
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant-girl came to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” But he denied it before all of them, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” When he went out to the porch, another servant-girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” Again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you.” Then he began to curse, and he swore an oath, “I do not know the man!” At that moment the cock crowed. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Intro:
We would all hope to be considered perfect.......
We would all hope to never make a mistake.......
.......even if we don’t really want to admit it
(pause)
But the truth of the matter is that none of us are able to get everything right..........all of the time!
(pause and expound)
Brokenness is inclusive with our human condition.
..........and whenever something is broken
......admitting that while we said we would never do it.
.......the first thing we would want to know is
(slight pause)
........actually we did it.
........can this be fixed?
But our heart is now willing to face the music and make the change!
(pause)
And the hardest thing to do sometimes........... is to admit that something is broken
......... especially when we don’t know if it can ever be fixed...
(pause)
And the thing I love about this text today is that Jesus is so intentional about relationship....
........that he is making a point to warn the disciples
.......that even though they have broken areas in their lives
(pause)
.........the broken areas are not going to be able to destroy their relationship with him!
(pause and expound
Church family this is exactly where we find Peter in today’s Gospel of Matthew.....
(slight pause)
As we look at the text...
Jesus says in verse 31...
“you will all become deserters, because of me this night.”
Deserters - (Gk) - Scandalizo
It’s interesting how this greek word’s meaning is interpreted.....
.....because this word deserted in the greek actually translates by saying,
“caused to sin”
in other words......
Jesus is explaining to the disciples that they are going to fall away, or abandon him
.......and this abandoning is associated with sin.
And this deserting effect......
......is going to happen due to their discouragement.
And so in my spiritual imagination....
....what Jesus is saying is,
“Your faithfulness is going to depreciate
......when you see what I got to go through”
(pause)
Now we got to be clear........
.....this is not BETRAYAL
............that conversation is reserved for Judas!
But.....
this is a conversation about.......Denial!
(pause)
(pause)
And Jesus says....
All of these eleven disciples are going to abandon him!
(pause)
And when Jesus makes this statement......
Peter has a problem being included in Jesus’s “ALL!”
(pause)
“Hold up........now JESUS!”
(pause)
“I hear you saying all will be deserters...
......and I can’t speak for everybody else
But.......
I will personally NEVER do anything like that!”
(pause)
Freedom family.....
“Have you ever said what Peter just said.....
(slight pause)
Have you ever said....
Everybody else may mess up..........
.......but
“I will NEVER.........do that!”
(pause and expound)
And watch Jesus’s response to Peter....
“Before the rooster crows.......
.......you’re going to abandon me not 1 time.......but 3 times!”
And basically what Jesus is saying to Peter is......
You’re Broken Peter!
or......
You’re not PERFECT!
(pause)
And......
.....NOBODY wants to hear this!
Especially from Jesus.........
(pause)
.....but I promise you......
.........you never want to be a FAKE version of PERFECTION
(pause)
......it’s better to be AUTHENTICALLY FLAWED
…because the sooner we can admit that we have flaws
.......the sooner we can FIX whatever is broken in our lives!
(pause and expound)
Expound - Freedom
I wonder if there’s anybody in here that refuses to go through 2020 acting like nothing is broken.......
It’s OK to admit,
(pause)
“you know what.........I got issues!”
(pause)
Not even Peter.......
…and Peter is not satisfied with Jesus’s foreknowledge based on his next response.
Peter says in verse 35....
Peter said to him, “Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And so said all the disciples.
In other words....
Even if it means I got to die with you, I will NEVER say that I don’t know you!
(pause)
And Peter means everything he is saying.....
But what he is not considering is the fact that he is only his best self.......in the best of conditions!
And many of us think the same way.....
We believe that our lives are always going to look like they do when we are at our BEST and everything is working right!
(pause)
But the true definition of being BROKEN.......
.......is when something is supposed to be working....
...........unfortunately is NOT WORKING...
(pause)
And....
.......somebody in here knows what it means to be BROKEN!
As a matter of fact......
as it is written:
“There is no one who is righteous, not even one;
there is no one who has understanding,
there is no one who seeks God.
All have turned aside, together they have become worthless;
there is no one who shows kindness,
there is not even one.”
(pause and expound)
Saying we are not BROKEN, does not FIX our brokeness
(pause)
Our declaration must not be spoken out of our own strength.
But declaration must be spoken out of God’s strength.
Because whenever a declaration is made it signifies an authority....
........it stands on a power!
(pause)
And often times just like Peter, we miss the opportunity of renewal......
.......because we fear to admit we have something broken that needs to be fixed.......
(pause)
But there’s nothing better......
......than a good reality check!
(pause)
Watch the text......
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant-girl came to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” But he denied it before all of them, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.”
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant-girl came to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.”
According to the text......
Outside in the courtyard of the house where Jesus is going to be placed on trial.......
There is a conversation between a maid and Peter.....
And she identifies him by saying......
“You’re one of the followers of Jesus of Galillee.”
And Peter says.......
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
(pause)
Peter you just said you would never do this!
(pause)
How is this happening to the same Peter who said..,
“I will never deny you Jesus?”
(pause)
The same way it happens to us!
.........we forget that we are broken!
(pause)
.......and we refuse to listen to the warning signs of TRUTH that tries to prepare us from falling into certain traps
(pause)
Because truth spoke to Peter and said....
“This is what’s coming....
.......and Peter said,
.......it aint coming my way!”
and we just read Peter’s first words,
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
(pause)
Look at it now.....
When he went out to the porch, another servant-girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” Again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.”
According to the text.....
As Peter moves over to the porch in the courtyard.....
......the conversation moves from the servant girl and Peter
.....to the servant girl and other bystanders in the crowd as she tries to convince them of who Peter is
........and Peter responds in my spiritual imagination by saying,
“I promise you......
......I have no idea who that man is!”
(pause)
After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you.” Then he began to curse, and he swore an oath, “I do not know the man!” At that moment the cock crowed.
According to Matthew’s Gospel.....
The bystanders walk up to him and challenged him again by saying.....
“We can tell by your Galillean accent that you’re one of Jesus’s followers!”
(pause)
Peter gets so angry.......
.....the bible says he started cursing and said,
“If i’m lying, may God do so and so to me.........because I do not have any idea who that man Jesus is!”
(slight pause)
And the bible says as soon as he got out the 3rd denial........
........the rooster started crowing!!!
(pause and expound)
Now here it is.....
.....this is how we fix it!
Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
1. Peter Remembered
Remembered
Face truth, and confront who we really are.
.........we have broken, sinful areas in our lives
In the movie OVERCOMER, John the football coach has to be reminded by a new friend that he meets in an amazing way to help him to see the truth of who he really is.......
........because the truth is that sometimes we need help looking at the real us!
(pause and expound)
We accept what the Word says about us.
......we needed a Savior!
And all this means is that humanity is not all powerful....
.........but God is!
And......
........there are times of brokeness that occur in our lives where we need someone stronger than we are to come along side us and tell us how to get things on track!
(pause)
2. Peter went out and wept bitterly
went out and wept bitterly
Peter was truly sorry for his sin.
Repentance leads to forgivness because its the right recognition of sin.
It’s the admission of doing wrong........and the expression of a desire to turn away and no longer being trapped
Repent and turn from our old selves and turn towards God for Renewal.
(pause and expound)
In the movie OVERCOMER.......
The trackstar “Hannah Scott” is approached by Principal Brooks and the Gospel message is shared to her. It is then that she realizes her brokenness.....
.......but more importantly she realizes that through repentance she has an opportunity to fix some things in her life that was messed up to truly find out who she really is!
.....to find out who God created her to be!
(pause)
The bible says in...
So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!
2 corinthians 5.17
In Christ......
Peter was made new.....
....his life was fixed by Jesus!
and in instead of denying Jesus.....Peter is proclaimng Jesus!
Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.”
And if anybody knows things can be turned around.....
Peter knows......
.....this can be fixed!
(pause)
FREEDOM.....
There’s no LIFE TOO BROKEN
...........that God can’t FIX!
(pause)
Look at somebody and holler....
“I know how to FIX THIS!”
Jesus wasn’t telling Peter he was going to deny him......
.........to dissapoint him
.......Jesus was telling him this
........so that he could prepare him!
“Look man...........you’re going to need me!”
(pause)
And in my spiritual imagination I hear God saying.....
I know you’re broken!
But I also know that......
“you’re going to need me!”
And here’s the thing......
I know how to FIX THIS!
(Tell the Gospel message!!)
“I’ve got a son name Jesus!...................[tell the story Baker!]
...........................................................COMPLETION......................................................
