Scripture repeatedly warns against false teachings, which deny or distort some aspect of the gospel. The origin of such teachings is attributed either to human error or to demonic inspiration.

Live your life with open hands, so that God may bless you freely as you are a blessing to others.
Do you know why the dead sea is dead? Because what flows into it is trapped and has no outlet to pass on the water and allow fresh new water.
Do you know why the dead sea is dead? Because what flows into it is trapped and has no outlet to pass on the water and allow fresh new water.
Question for you, are you living your life with your hands open or are they closed like the dead sea? allowing nothing new to pass on to you as you pass on to others?
Here’s what I know about the many testimonies of my personal life, every time I lived my life with open hands and followed God’s instructions, I was blessed beyond anything I could ever imagine.

2 Corinthians 9:7–11 NLT
7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” 8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. 9 As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.” 10 For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. 11 Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God.
Look like God in your giving, when God gives it changes the world forever.
John 3:16 NLT

Examples of bad sowing

Like the farmer we must all monitor what we plant, we must cultivate it, we must nurture it, we must care for it and work it to enhance the opportunity to bring forth the best results. And like the farmer some will bring success to their harvest and others will have a little success and still some will have a failing harvest. But what if you knew the process to not fail? Would you take that information and bring forth an amazing harvest. Absolutely! Well today I want to continue talking about the laws of sowing and reaping and in todays study we are going to look at what type of ground not to sow into.
Galatians 6:7–10 The Message
7 Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—8 harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life. 9 So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. 10 Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.

7–8  Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life.

9–10  So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.

Galatians 6:7–10 NLT
7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. 8 Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. 9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
Sowing into a ministry that does not produce a good harvest.
Galatians 6

Revelation 2:14–15 NLT
14 “But I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin. 15 In a similar way, you have some Nicolaitans among you who follow the same teaching.
Are you seeing true results, not just numbers, but actual change in peoples lives in that they look more like Christ. A mature believer.
Is the Pastor the only one benefiting. But everyone else is still stuck in the same place. (Poverty, No hope, Faithless)
Is the ministry making a difference in the world around them.

Romans 16:17–18 NLT
17 And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. 18 Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people.
Titus 1:5–16 NLT
5 I left you on the island of Crete so you could complete our work there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you. 6 An elder must live a blameless life. He must be faithful to his wife, and his children must be believers who don’t have a reputation for being wild or rebellious. 7 A church leader is a manager of God’s household, so he must live a blameless life. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or dishonest with money. 8 Rather, he must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must love what is good. He must live wisely and be just. He must live a devout and disciplined life. 9 He must have a strong belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with wholesome teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong. 10 For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others. This is especially true of those who insist on circumcision for salvation. 11 They must be silenced, because they are turning whole families away from the truth by their false teaching. And they do it only for money. 12 Even one of their own men, a prophet from Crete, has said about them, “The people of Crete are all liars, cruel animals, and lazy gluttons.” 13 This is true. So reprimand them sternly to make them strong in the faith. 14 They must stop listening to Jewish myths and the commands of people who have turned away from the truth. 15 Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.

i.e (Give the illustration of investing into a company that you know is failing)
Sowing into an individual who does not produce good fruit.
A person claiming to be a friend / (significant other) who is always exhausting you through your resources and time.
A person claiming to be a friend who is always exhausting you through your resources and time.
They don’t build you up, but instead are always pulling you down. Never holding you accountable but are encouraging you to a life of loss.
They’re jealous of you and will not celebrate the good that God is doing in your life, with a genuine since of appreciation.
Matthew 7:16–20 NLT
16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.
Matthew 15:17–20 NLT
17 “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. 18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. 20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”
Matthew 7:15–20 NLT
15 “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.
Proverbs 18:24 NLT
24 There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24 CEV
24 Some friends don’t help, but a true friend is closer than your own family.

Proverbs 1
Sowing into material things that do not better your long-term life.
Sowing into material things that do not better your long-term life.
Somethings are temporal and in the end are fading fads.
Somethings are costly and may not give you the right return on your investment.
Most things require the 48 hour rule. Research it completely and then make a pros and cons list on it. Then even if it seems like it’s a great thing wait 48 hours and then respond with your action. You’ll win every time this away.
Proverbs 20:25 The Message
25 An impulsive vow is a trap; later you’ll wish you could get out of it.
Luke 14:28 NLT
28 “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?
Luke 14:28–32 NLT
28 “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? 29 Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. 30 They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’ 31 “Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him? 32 And if he can’t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away.
Luke 14:2
Let me close with this last verse and this is an important one about sowing in bad ground.
Luke 12:15–21 NLT
15 Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” 16 Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. 17 He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’ 18 Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. 19 And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!” ’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ 21 “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
Luke 12:15-
Notice the But there, God is not saying you can’t enjoy the blessings of material things, just don’t make it more important then the one who has given them to you. God!

Qualities of false teachings

They are valueless

Matthew 15:9 NLT
9 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’”

They are destructive in their nature

2 Peter 2:1 NLT
1 But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them. In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves.

They have the capacity to lead people astray

Acts 20:30 NLT
30 Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following.

They may be popular

2 Peter 2:2 NLT
2 Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered.

The origin of false teachings

Demonic inspiration

1 Timothy 4:1–2 NLT
1 Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. 2 These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.

Human error

2 Peter 2:3 NLT
3 In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction will not be delayed.

Discerning false teachings

By their content

1 John 4:2–3 NLT
2 This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God. 3 But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here.

By the teacher’s lifestyle

Matthew 7:15–20 NLT
15 “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.

By their effects

1 Timothy 6:3–5 NLT
3 Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life. 4 Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. 5 These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy.

The antidote to false teachings

Holding fast to the true gospel

1 John 2:24 NLT
24 So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will remain in fellowship with the Son and with the Father.

Shunning false teachers
