AND SPECIFICALLY AS HE GAVE THE BREAD:
1. “This is my body, which is for you” … and
2. “Do this in remembrance of Me”
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
AS WE PREPARE TO PARTAKE OF THE BREAD TOGETHER I WANT TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO CONSIDER TWO PHRASES THAT JESUS SAID WHEN ESTABLISHING THE LORD’S SUPPER.
AND SPECIFICALLY AS HE GAVE THE BREAD:
1. “This is my body, which is for you” … and
2. “Do this in remembrance of Me”
Luke’s account IN CHAPTER 22:19 states;
And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
THINK ABOUT WHAT JESUS DID AND WHAT HE SAID THAT AS A PARALLEL DEMONSTRATION OF THAT;
TO HELP US VISUALIZE AND PERSONALIZE THIS, CLOSE YOUR EYES OR IMAGINE IN YOUR MIND BEING AT THE TABLE EATING A MEAL WITH CHRIST AND HAVING HIM TURN TO YOU AFTER BREAKING THE BREAD AND LOOKING YOU IN THE EYES AND AS HE IS HANDING THE BREAD TO YOU SAYING, “this is my body, which is given for you” and while you take it that Christ is giving you bread but at the same time, because of His words, understanding that He has given you everything else that is good in your life, including His own body to sacrifice for you so that YOU could be saved. AS HE HANDS THE BREAD TO YOU HE LOOKS AT YOU IN LOVE.
THINK ABOUT WHAT JESUS DID AND WHAT HE SAID THAT WAS A DEMONSTRATION OF THAT;
SO EACH ONE OF US TODAY, AS WE PICK UP THE BREAD TO TAKE IT COMMUNING WITH EACH OTHER AND CHRIST KNOWING THAT PHRASE “THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU” FULLY APPLIES TO US AS MUCH AS IT DID THEM.
AS WE TAKE THIS TODAY, IT IS AS IF JESUS IS GIVING US THE BREAD AS HE DID THEM AND SAYING TO YOU PERSONALLY; “THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU.”
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN THAT HIS BODY IS GIVEN FOR YOU?
Jesus was going to give His body for us. He would give it to be beaten. He would give it to be mocked and spit upon. He would give His body to be scourged. He would give His body to be nailed to the cross.
Jesus came from heaven and lived in the physical body for you, to be a perfect example, to SHOW YOU THE FATHER (AND HIS LOVE FOR YOU.)
HIS BODY WAS GIVEN FOR YOU TO ENDURE TEMPTATION, EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL PAIN SO THAT HE COULD BE A SYMPATHIZING HIGH PRIEST FOR YOU WHO UNDERSTANDS ALL YOUR STRUGGLES.
His body was given for you to be beaten. His body would be given for you to be mocked and spit upon. His Body would be given to be scourged. His body would given to be nailed to the cross to hang in excruciating pain hour after hour.
His body was given up to die for you. And all of these things He had to give His body to because His body had to suffer for millions of sins of millions of people and YOU. Jesus gave His body over to satisfy wrath of God that your sins deserved.
AS ISAIAH PROPHESIED;
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Just as Jesus of His own accorded handed the bread over, He freely gave over His body to be crucified as He said He would.
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
JESUS TRULY GAVE HIS BODY OVER NOT FOR PHYSICAL LIVE TO BE SUSTAINED AS WITH BREAD BUT SO THAT SPIRITUAL LIFE COULD BE SAVED.
Jesus told His apostles, WHEN SOME THOUGHT THEY SHOULD FIGHT those trying to arrest Him;
Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?
This fact remained true throughout Jesus’ trial, scourging and crucifixion. But He continually gave over His body to what was done to Him, just as He said with the bread “for you” and for me.
Without Jesus giving up His body we would not have THIS body; this family, this community, this home.
We come together because Christ gave His body; to eat of the bread that represents His body that was given to die for us. AND EACH AND EVERY TIME WE TAKE THE BREAD WE REMEMBER CHRIST GIVING HIS BODY TO SAVE US AND MAKE US A SPIRITUAL BODY.
WE PROCLAIM CHRIST DEATH AND RESURRECTION UNTIL HE COMES.
We pro
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
As long as we eat the bread we are proclaiming what He did when He gave His body to die. That we collectively as the body believe that He died and was resurrected.
We are not doing a physical act because we are hungry, we are doing a deeply spiritual act that is a declaration of our belief and dependence on Christ because we are hungry to be with Him in heaven.
AND WE ARE DECLARING THAT WE ARE SUSTAINED SPIRITUALLY BECAUSE HE IS THE BREAD FROM HEAVEN BY WHO WE LIVE.
WE DO THIS, AS WITH THE CUP, IN REMEMBRANCE OF HIM, WHO DIED FOR US TO CONSTANTLY BE CONVICTED TO LIVE FOR HIM! AND LIKE HIM BE RESURRECTED TO LIVE FOREVER.
JUST AS THE PASSOVER MEAL, THAT JESUS AND HIS APOSTLES WERE PARTAKING OF WHEN JESUS DID THIS, WAS A MEMORIAL OR REMEMBRANCE OF GOD SAVING ISRAEL FROM SLAVERY TO MAKE THEM HIS PEOPLE.
WE TAKE THIS AS A MEMORIAL OR REMEMBRANCE OF CHRIST (OUR PASSOVER LAMB) WHOSE BLOOD SAVED US FROM SIN AND ITS ETERNAL CONSEQUENCES TO MAKE US HIS TREASURED POSSESSION.
PRAYER: AS WE COMMUNE WITH ONE ANOTHER TO REMEMBER WHAT CHRIST DID IN GIVING US HIS BODY TO DIE.
