Inspiration of Scripture
Inspiration of Scripture
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
θεόπνευστος- God-breathed adj. — produced by the Spirit of God; understood as the air that was physically expelled out of the lungs of God.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
Some people teach that the Bible merely contains the Word of God. Use 2 Timothy 3:16 to discover what is wrong with that statement.
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
How could the Bible be God’s Word when it was actually put to paper and ink by men? What does 2 Peter 1:20 tell us about the Bible?
What does verse 21 teach about the Bible?
15 And when the ship was caught and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Because the Bible is the Word of God, it is without error—a teaching referred to as the inerrancy of Scripture. In John 17:17, Jesus states that God’s Word is truth. It is impossible for God to breathe out falsehood or error.
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
The Bible further teaches that Scripture is absolutely reliable. What does Jesus say about the Bible in John 10:35b?
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
What was Jesus’ point in Matthew 5:18?
1. The very WORDS of Scripture are God-breathed and inerrant. (This is referred to as verbal inspiration.)

According to the last part of 2 Timothy 3:16, with what four areas does the Bible help?
According to the last part of 2 Timothy 3:16, with what four areas does the Bible help?
Teaching / Doctrine (what is right): This word specifically refers to the Bible as a teacher.
Teaching / Doctrine (what is right): This word specifically refers to the Bible as a teacher.
Reproof (what is not right): This word refers to a strong rebuke. The Holy Spirit uses the Bible to prick our consciences about our sin. Scripture exposes to us our sinfulness.
Reproof (what is not right): This word refers to a strong rebuke. The Holy Spirit uses the Bible to prick our consciences about our sin. Scripture exposes to us our sinfulness.
Correction (how to get right): This word is used of setting a broken bone or straightening a crooked spine. Scripture gives spiritual mending—it sets us right again.

Training / Instruction (how to stay right): This word is used of child-training. As parent to child, the Bible trains and disciplines us, bringing us to spiritual maturity.

It is obvious that the Bible is helpful, but with what specific areas does it help?

1. The Bible is essential for salvation.
1. The Bible is essential for salvation.
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
What does 2 Timothy 3:5b say that Scripture is able to do?
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
How is saving faith developed in non-believers according to Romans 10:17?
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Romans 1:16 says that the Bible is the “power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes”
2. The Bible is essential for Christian growth.

2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
I Peter 2:2 describes the process of spiritual growth. What form of nourishment do babies receive?
As a baby Christian, what is your spiritual milk? (c.f. Job 23:12; Hebrews 5:13-14)
12 “I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
How often do babies eat?
What would happen if a baby didn’t eat?
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
What does I Peter 2:2 teach regarding your feeding on Scripture? How often do you need it? Why? (c.f. I Thessalonians 2:13; Acts 20:32)
13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

9 BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Scripture is clear: there can be no growth and no godliness apart from consistent disciplined Bible study.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
