“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
On 20 July 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Many ways I am a child of the Apollo landings, although I must have been too small - Lego Saturn V, influenced my life choices.
Would not have happened without JFK’s vision to achieve what he once described as “one of the most important decisions” in his presidency. Expressed most clearly in his speech to congress where in 1961 where he set out his vision and asked for the money to achieve it: Quote
.“First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish. We propose to accelerate the development of the appropriate lunar space craft. We propose to develop alternate liquid and solid fuel boosters, much larger than any now being developed, until certain which is superior. We propose additional funds for other engine development and for unmanned explorations--explorations which are particularly important for one purpose which this nation will never overlook: the survival of the man who first makes this daring flight. But in a very real sense, it will not be one man going to the Moon – if we make this judgement affirmatively, it will be an entire nation. For all of us must work to put him there.”
Our readings today describe a single purpose with a common goal. Greater purpose than Apollo 11 - salvation of the world/creation. κόσμος - world/creation/that bit of Gods world that does not yet know him in Jn. Speaks of new creation - of the age to come (eternal life - life of the age) ζωὴν αἰώνιον.
God’s heart expressed. ἀγαπάω - love. Initiated - gave his son, not just sent - but gave a gift.
We are looking at this purpose and our part in it over these 6 weeks from Epiphany to Lent. Privelege we have.

Outlines a Single Purpose - putting someone on the moon requires a common goal -- everyone puts him there.

John F Kennedy, Delivered in person before a joint session of Congress May 25, 1961
God’s heart expressed. ἀγαπάω - love. Initiated - gave his son, not just sent - but gave a gift.
We are looking at this purpose and our part in it over these 6 weeks from Epiphany to Lent. Privelege we have.
Just over eight years after the speech, on July 20, 1969, NASA's Apollo 11 mission would land the first humans on the moon.
: Global vision, Local expression - , Bridged by Partnership.
GV - whole world redeemed, coming of HS expression of
LE - speaking in different tongues
BP- All heard it together.
3 themes seen throughout Acts. Paul etc
And now:
GV - Across the world God’s mission is going on.
LE - shaped by local context.
BP - not “you in your corner and I in mine” but together
In these two passages we are reminded of Gods heart and our place within it. In his speech JFK gave to congress and USA his heart and vision and invited them to be involved. We too hear from God of his heart and invitation. Will we get involved.
