Handout
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.
INTRO—
At the risk of being nerdy, I’m going to start with the idea of sentence diagramming. I do so because a familiar passage leads us to miss things from time to time.
“Not ASHAMED of the GOSPEL, because...”
“Not, for, I am ashamed of the Gospel”
Gospel as described so far: the promise of God; accomplished by the true Son of David/Son of God; evidence of the Grace of God
Assertion…then further buttress the ‘argument’=because...
The Gospel is the POWER OF GOD.
POWER: ‘dunamis;’ ability & capacity to accomplish a task
For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast.
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved.
for SALVATION (Next week I’ll have more to say, but for now…)
for SALVATION
There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”
In the Gospel the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD (is revealed).
RIGHTEOUSNESS: (a state/status) right with, right/upright, just(ified); [of/from God]
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree; so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
is REVEALED
is REVEALED (made known, disclose, uncover, lift the veil on)
God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
CONCL—
These two verses have often upset and changed the world!
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.
