Jill and I have discovered something about Central Washington.
It does snow in the winter
It is cold in the winter
It is HOT and dry in the summer
Our whole community is very friendly, engaging, warm, genuine.
People are willing to talk about themselves, their work, their families,
People are not so open about their faith. You may have worked with someone for 20 years and not ever know they were a follower of Jesus.
Because of our position in this community being the minority, like 90-10. We have blinders on, we want to tell the world that we know Jesus and Jesus is the only way but… we can’t. We can’t make ourselves open up to the people around us.
Our hearts are soft… when a need comes up. I can see it in your faces when we talk about it. The look is… “Pastor I see this need but I can’t do anything about it.” I can give you several examples.
I also see this faith community that is VERY GENEROUS! with our money. This is evidenced by the number of you that answer the bell when a individual need is identified. Diapers, Foster Kids, Benevolent offering, Homeless folks… etc. etc.
Later this morning we are going to talk through our budget for 2020. I expect that we will see several people start giving for the first time, maintaining and increasing their giving. Those dollars, your generosity over and above your tithe is incredible!
We, this church, our community covets your giving. We celebrate your tithe, your commitment to regular giving of 10 % or more of your income.
Speaking of the Tithing…Here is a video from our favorite guys, the Skit guys. What kind of giver are you?
Video — “The Skinny on Tithing”
The Skinny on Tithing (4:56)
There are a few types of givers...
The “non-giver” I can’t give, I don’t give. I put a sealed envelope in the plate so it looks like I give. If forced by my wife or the pastor I’ll slip a $20 out.
The “Investment Giver” - this is an investment with immeasurable returns. If I give a $1 he WILL, WILL turn it into $100. Guaranteed.
The “Clueless Giver” - Well its a tithe when I buy donuts for the Sunday School class. It’s a tithe when I give my wife money to go buy a pair of shoes and purse because it makes her happy. God says I’m to keep my wife happy.
And I’ll add one… If I give 10% i won’t be able to pay my bills… that’s way to much! Where ever you are, make a promise between you, your family and God. Give him 5% and go up 1% a year. Draw a line and say, “This is what this family does and God will bless it… That I do promise. This question inevitably comes up. Do I tithe from the gross or the net… I DON’T CARE, JUST GIVE!!
Malachi 3:10 NIV
10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
Let’s dig into some scripture and read about giving money… I won’t camp here long but I think it is important to start in the Old Testament. The whole passage of interest here is . We are going to look at 3.10

10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
Let’s tear this one apart here a bit
The Tithe is identified as the first 1/10 of everything. Your harvest, your money, of whatever you produce. In the case of children. God asked for the first son to be 100% dedicated to the Lord.
Use see there is a LONG STANDING principle from scriptue
The Tithe is identified as the first 1/10 of everything. Your harvest, your money, of whatever you produce. In the case of children. God asked for the first son to be 100% dedicated to the Lord.
The whole tithe then is the whole 10%. 10% of your giving belongs in the local storehouse, here at First Baptist. Then if you want to do an offering to Compassion, to Africa Inland Mission, to the 1000 other organizations that support Christian causes that is fabulous. But your first 10% belongs here.
Then he says… “Test me” I do NOT want to test God. He holds all of the cards and knows whose going to win. But in this case he is not holding this “test” over you. He is saying… tithe and I will show you tithing can do, I’ll open the flood gates and pour out blessings
So He asks us to tithe… the full 10% to him.
Someone is going to say…well the New testament doesn’t talk about a “tithe” and we are a NT church. Your right the NT doesn’t. BUT nothing in the OT precludes bringing 10% into the storehouse. Jesus did not speak against it. Paul encouraged generosity so maybe even MORE than 10%.
2 Corinthians 9:6 NIV
6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
I am NOT a health and wealth preacher… I don’t believe that if you give X that you receive XXX.
What I do believe is that being a joyful, even sacrificial giver is a great posture to be in. Not because it affects your salvation, but it confirms the work that God is doing in your life.
2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV
7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

I believe in the “principle” of first fruits. The old testament highlights this… but I think it is important here in the valley.
Deuteronomy 23:17 NIV
17 No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute.
Leviticus 23:17 NIV
17 From wherever you live, bring two loaves made of two-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour, baked with yeast, as a wave offering of firstfruits to the Lord.
Exodus 23:16 NIV
16 “Celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field. “Celebrate the Festival of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field.
Exodus 23:19 NIV
19 “Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God. “Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.

Jesus is called the “first fruit”
1 Corinthians 15:20 NIV
20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.

Jesus offered everything… 200% of himself for use by the Father.
If its God enough for Jesus is make this offering for himself, all the way to the cross. Then where does that leave US? My guess it leaves us a position where we feel weak and insignificant.
I can’t give, its the last of my fruit. I won’t have enough… Instead because I have the gifts that have been shared with by a Good Good Father… regardless of my position or station in life… I AM COMMITTED TO GIVING!!
I’ll be honest with you...
The years that our boys with absolutely involved in everything challenged us… hurt us financially and distracted us from the important things in our lives. Yes, we were both involved to the max at our local church. If the doors were open we were there. We gave sacrificially of our talent and our time...
God forgive me…God for us for cheating you of our treasure. We rationalized by saying…well what and how much time we spend at church certainly stands for something...
Yes it does and I would never discount that.
But he asks us, he demands our treasure.
Here is a definition that we will work with this morning
Stewardship
The careful use, control and management of the possessions of another that have been entrusted to one. It is also used to describe responsible use of wealth and possessions by Christians.
If your like me… I count everyday AS A BLESSING and I have many
My God loves me
Christ died for me
My family loves… well tolerates me
I have the BEST JOB in the world. In the greatest church, God’s church in Sunnyside, WA.
Because of that...
Psalm 89 NIV
A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. 1 I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. 2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself. 3 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, 4 ‘I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.’ ” 5 The heavens praise your wonders, Lord, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. 6 For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord? Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings? 7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. 8 Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you. 9 You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them. 10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. 11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it. 12 You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name. 13 Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted. 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you. 15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, Lord. 16 They rejoice in your name all day long; they celebrate your righteousness. 17 For you are their glory and strength, and by your favor you exalt our horn. 18 Indeed, our shield belongs to the Lord, our king to the Holy One of Israel. 19 Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful people you said: “I have bestowed strength on a warrior; I have raised up a young man from among the people. 20 I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him. 21 My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him. 22 The enemy will not get the better of him; the wicked will not oppress him. 23 I will crush his foes before him and strike down his adversaries. 24 My faithful love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be exalted. 25 I will set his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. 26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.’ 27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. 28 I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. 29 I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure. 30 “If his sons forsake my law and do not follow my statutes, 31 if they violate my decrees and fail to keep my commands, 32 I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; 33 but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. 34 I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. 35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness— and I will not lie to David— 36 that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before me like the sun; 37 it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.” 38 But you have rejected, you have spurned, you have been very angry with your anointed one. 39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant and have defiled his crown in the dust. 40 You have broken through all his walls and reduced his strongholds to ruins. 41 All who pass by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors. 42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice. 43 Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword and have not supported him in battle. 44 You have put an end to his splendor and cast his throne to the ground. 45 You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with a mantle of shame. 46 How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire? 47 Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all humanity! 48 Who can live and not see death, or who can escape the power of the grave? 49 Lord, where is your former great love, which in your faithfulness you swore to David? 50 Remember, Lord, how your servant has been mocked, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations, 51 the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked, with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one. 52 Praise be to the Lord forever! Amen and Amen.
Psalm 89:1–2 NIV
1 I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. 2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.

I have seen our giving in action...
I’ve seen Young Life kids running through this church and listening carefully to the Gospel.
I see a beautiful building that is well built and well kept.
You pay me a salary, you pay Pam, to administer this church, you pay Joe to lead us into the very presence of God in worship and you pay Deanna to keep our facilities presentable.
I also see that some are more than willing to open our wallets.
I apologize if this gets a little close for you
but I only see a small number of people willing to step up and to be responsible for the ministries of our church.
God… thank you for the gifts that you have surrounded us with. Lord we pray for those who want to step up their service in the ministries of First Baptist.
2 Corinthians 9:12 NIV
12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

Acts 6:1–3 NIV
1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them

Acts 6.1-
Note in V. 1 they had the food, they had the resources but what they were lacking was the distribution of food.
in V.2 they identified their responsibilities. “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God to become servers.
V.3 So they chose associates, qualified, loving, caring, passionate, called people. Notice this does not say that they must be perfect. Just that they committed to God, listen for His Spirit and the responsibility would be theirs.
Why do we give, why do we serve...
2 Corinthians 9:13 NIV
13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.

Look at the verse…others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel Christ.
Your giving, your service will bring others to Christ.
Genesis 39:4–6 NIV
4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,

1 It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, 2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

Thank you God...
Thank you God… for all of the gifts, all of the treasure that you have given to us generously. .
Lord give us the courage to the step up and step out. If your not tithing… try it. GOD WILL BLESS…I promise
If you are giving sacrificially keep giving and increase your giving 1% each year. If you give 10%, give 11%. If you give 20% give 22%. Let’s see what God can do...
If you are serving…keep serving. If you are sharing your talent keep sharing. We all have gifts, we have talent and we all make time to give back.
If any of this make any sense…if any of this strikes a cord. Praise God. Make the changes necessary.
I am asking you all…to step up. I’m asking all of us to listen carefully

They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.
I’m going to read this scripture in total, without commenting (that’s tough for a preacher)… if you are able I’d like you stand as I read. Look at the monitors and read along silently.

Genesis 43:16 NIV
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal and prepare a meal; they are to eat with me at noon.”
Genesis 44:1–12 NIV
1 Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack. 2 Then put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said. 3 As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys. 4 They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil? 5 Isn’t this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.’ ” 6 When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. 7 But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that! 8 We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found inside the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house? 9 If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.” 10 “Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.” 11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

2 Samuel 16:1 NIV
1 When David had gone a short distance beyond the summit, there was Ziba, the steward of Mephibosheth, waiting to meet him. He had a string of donkeys saddled and loaded with two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred cakes of raisins, a hundred cakes of figs and a skin of wine.
2 Samuel 19:17 NIV
17 With him were a thousand Benjamites, along with Ziba, the steward of Saul’s household, and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They rushed to the Jordan, where the king was.

Esther 1:8 NIV

Luke 16:1–12 NIV
1 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. 2 So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’ 3 “The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— 4 I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’ 5 “So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 “ ‘Nine hundred gallons of olive oil,’ he replied. “The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’ 7 “Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’ “ ‘A thousand bushels of wheat,’ he replied. “He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’ 8 “The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. 9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. 10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

Matthew 25:14–30 NIV
14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’ 21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ 22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’ 23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ 24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ 26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28 “ ‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Luke 19:12–27 NIV
12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’ 14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’ 15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. 16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’ 17 “ ‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’ 18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’ 19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’ 20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’ 24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’ 25 “ ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’ 26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’ ”

6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

They are to use their gifts to benefit others
1 Peter 4:10–11 NIV
10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Acts 4:32–35 NIV
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

1 And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.
