Introduction

I have preached many negatively phrased sermons at LVC. To preach this passage as it stands would be another, but I want to formulate it as a positive encouragement to holy worship.

Introduction

Homiletical plan

Homiletical plan:
We need to revere his name. Name = person and presence.

Master (v. 6)
General (passim)
Celebrity (v.
Celebrity (v. 11)
King (v. 14)
We need to replace unworthy actions.
They: offering flawed sacrifices; justified by financial pressures.
We: compromised worship unworthy of a Great King.

Priesthood of all believers; the OT priests offered material sacrifices; we offer spiritual sacrifices.
Two types of sacrifices: atonement and consecration. Atonement points to Jesus, consecration to our response to Jesus.

Introduction

We do not see the world as it is; we see it as we are, and favourably towards us. Bike on pavement.
Bike on pavement.
Malachi: message to God’s people who did not see the reality as it was, but as they were. They disputed with him.
Repeated emphasis on God’s name, here and in Malachi as whole. God’s name = his person and his presence.
We honour the Lord’s great name through acceptable sacrifices. Three ways we honour his name.

We revere his person

Malachi 1:6–8 NKJV
“A son honors his father, And a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence? Says the Lord of hosts To you priests who despise My name. Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’ “You offer defiled food on My altar, But say, ‘In what way have we defiled You?’ By saying, ‘The table of the Lord is contemptible.’ And when you offer the blind as a sacrifice, Is it not evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, Is it not evil? Offer it then to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you favorably?” Says the Lord of hosts.
Father (v. 6)
Master (v. 6)
General (passim)
Celebrity (v. 11)
King (v. 14)
Qureshi account of “because he’s your Father.”

We resound with his praises

Malachi 1:9–11 NKJV
“But now entreat God’s favor, That He may be gracious to us. While this is being done by your hands, Will He accept you favorably?” Says the Lord of hosts. “Who is there even among you who would shut the doors, So that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain? I have no pleasure in you,” Says the Lord of hosts, “Nor will I accept an offering from your hands. For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations,” Says the Lord of hosts.
Jesus: , Father seeks worshippers in Spirit and truth.
Our bodies ()
Our praise ()
Repent or stop all worship. Temple = God’s earthly home. He is asking his guests to leave (comp. Jesus cleansing Temple).
Our good works ()
Our sharing ()
Replacement: If Israel won’t worship purely, the Gentiles will. (comp. Jesus, the stones will cry out)
Our giving (). Contextualise this in the context of the campus plant.
Our ministry (; ). Our life of service is a sacrifice that pleases God.

We replace our platitudes

Malachi 1:12–14 NKJV
“But you profane it, In that you say, ‘The table of the Lord is defiled; And its fruit, its food, is contemptible.’ You also say, ‘Oh, what a weariness!’ And you sneer at it,” Says the Lord of hosts. “And you bring the stolen, the lame, and the sick; Thus you bring an offering! Should I accept this from your hand?” Says the Lord. “But cursed be the deceiver Who has in his flock a male, And takes a vow, But sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished— For I am a great King,” Says the Lord of hosts, “And My name is to be feared among the nations.
