MESSAGE

I did not have the privilege of knowing Mr. Rowell as you all did, but I do understand that you loved him and that he loved you.
And I know where we can turn to find comfort as we miss this one you dearly loved.
is one of the most famous portions of God’s Word. It’s one that we often hear at funerals, but let us think more deeply about these familiar words for just a few minutes.
Psalm 23 AV
A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Psalm

Really listen to that first line in , “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

Now, there is an incredible truth here that we read right past because we’ve heard this psalm so much—”The LORD is my shepherd...”
You’ll remember that David was a shepherd before he was King of Israel. Shepherd’s work was considered dirty work. If a family needed a shepherd, it was the youngest son, like David, who was required to do the unpleasant job.
Shepherds slept with the sheep 24 hours a day, caring for them day and night, summer and winter, in good weather and bad. Shepherds worked to nourish and guide the sheep. They protected the sheep from themselves and from wolves who were hungry to devour them.
Who would want to do such low, unending, tiresome work?
Listen to again, “The LORD is my shepherd...” Our shepherd is none other than YHWH himself!
Listen to again, “The LORD is my shepherd...” Our shepherd is none other than YHWH himself! Who is YHWH? Well, remember when God spoke to Moses from the burning bush and told him to go to Egypt and lead his people out. Moses asked God for his personal name so that God’s people would know that Moses was sent by God. God told Moses, “Tell them that YHWH sent you—that I AM WHO I AM sent you,” ().That’s God’s personal name. It’s a name that reflects God’s timelessness; his unchanging and unchangeable holy nature; his divine independence; his infinite wisdom and power. One writer said that this name is inexhaustible like its bearer. And yet this inexhaustible one—this eternal, holy, all-powerful LORD—is our shepherd! He does the dirty work of caring for his sheep 24 hours a day, day and night, summer and winter, in good weather and bad!He works to nourish and guide us!He protects us from ourselves and from wolves who are hungry to devour us!He was Emmett’s shepherd thanks to Emmett’s faith in Christ, so Emmett had it all! He did not want! “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want...” ().What is it that we could want for?We could want for rest, but our Shepherd provides it for us.

Who is YHWH?

John 14:1–3 AV
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

[Illustration] One Saturday night, I got a call from a family in our church. There loved one wasn’t expected to make it through the night. They asked me to come to the hospital.
Last Saturday night when it seemed like Emmett wouldn’t make it through the night, on the way to the hospital I passed a wedding. Under a big white tent beautifully lit, people were dancing, smiling, and rejoicing. I thought about the difference in those two occasions. Here I was going to stand by Ms. Lois and her family as they said goodbye to a man they dearly loved. Here these people were at this wedding having this grand ol’ time. Then I thought about death being defeated in the resurrection of Jesus and the marriage supper of the Lamb.Jesus said in ...

Here I was going to stand by a family as a man they loved died.
And then there was a family at the wedding celebrating.
Then I thought about how Jesus has defeated death and how he will one day welcome those who trust him into a wedding celebration.

John 10:17–18 AV
Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Revelation 19:7–9 ESV
Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”

The Bride of Christ is the church.
The bride of Christ is the church; it is all who trust him as Savior and follow him as Lord; it’s all who admit that they are sinners and believe that Jesus died and rose to save us from the wrath of God on account of our sins. It’s all of us who recognize Jesus as the Good Shepherd who leads us through the valley of the shadow of death into the marriage supper of the Lamb by way of the wooden cross and empty tomb.
