Introduction

Luke 5:17–26 KJV 1900
17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? 23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? 24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. 25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

I. they had a mission (V.17-18)

Luke 5:17–18 KJV 1900
17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
The beginning of this neritive indicates the growing intrest in Christ’s ministery. we see in the text “the pharisees and teachers of the law weråe sitting there”
we see in verse 18 that some men had a mission to bring healing to their friend
Luke 5:18 KJV 1900
18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
THey had a mission, the mission was to bring their friend to Jesus.
Mission drives us, orginizations have missions, families have missions, missions tell us what we are doing, for theese men they wanted their friend to see Jesus.

III. They encountered an obstacle (V19-20)

Luke 5:19–20 KJV 1900
19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
Luke
The men took great risk, they believed that Jesues could heal thier friend. They took a risk because of the mission. This is true of men and women throughout the Bible
They took a risk because of the mis- sion. This is true of men and women throughout the Bible (e.g., Joshua leading the Israelites into the Promised Land or Elijah on Mt. Carmel). We now live on the other side of Jesus’ work on the cross and through the empty tomb. How much greater should our expectations be?
Joshua leading the Israelites into the Promised Land
Elijah on Mt. Carmel
We now live on the other side of Jesus’ work on the cross and through the empty tomb. How much greater should our expectations be?
The crowd
as we can see in the text the crowd was too big and there was no way to get their friend to Jesues It was at this point, many would have givin up.
We do the same today, We throw up the white flag of surrender. There’s no way in—or so it seems. We assume that an open door is equal to the path of least resistance.
Imagine for a moment if the apostle Paul would have only walked through open doors? Half of the New Testament would have never been written. These men saw the obstacle, but because their hope and belief were so strong, they opened the door
don’t misunderstand here it is not or job to shove doors open that God has shut, but neither should we just wait for oppertunities to drip into our lap
At this point, many of us give up. We throw up the white flag of surrender. There’s no way in—or so it seems. We assume that an open door is equal to the path of least resistance. Imagine for a moment if the apostle Paul would have only walked through open doors? Half of the New Testament would have never been written. These men saw the obstacle, but because their hope and belief were so strong, they kicked open that closed door.
just picture this in this time period homes would have been made by wood dirt and straw with flat roofs they went up to the roof removed part of the roof and lowered their friend at the feet of Jesues
When Jesues saw the faith of the man he said “your sins are forgiven”

IV. They Got more thab they bargained for )V21-26)

Luke 5:21–26 KJV 1900
Luke 5
So… Jesus had said “your sins are forgiven”
and the pharsees are sitting there like What??? what did he just say??? did he say his sins are forgiven? what power does he have to say that.
So the Pharsees are freekingout talking to each other in their pharisitical way and Jesus relizes they have an issue and says...
“Why do you question in your hearts?Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?”
Basiclly what he is saying is, you know I have the power to heal why do I not have the power to forgive sins?
After he had said this to them he continues with the parilitic and tells him ise, pick up your bed and go home.”
then what happends in vers 25
Luke 5:25 KJV 1900
25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
So what Just happened
men wanted there friend healed
the couldnt get in to the house so they desroyed the roof and lowered him in
Jesues told him his sins were forgiven
the Paresees freeked out
Jesues admonished them
Jesues then told the man to pick up his bead and walk
the man got up left and glorifyed God
Luke 5:26 KJV 1900
26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
Everyone there was in complete amazment and shock at what had happened and they said “we have seen incredible things today”
We need to not settle for settle for the mundane when Jesus wants the miraculous.
Don’t settle for the mundane when Jesus wants the miraculous. People thought the primary need was external. What Jesus did in this passage is true for everyone. He shows us that the greatest need is an internal posture of a heart that needs to be changed. And, when Jesus addressed the deeper need, the people were filled with awe! I love the order that takes place here. It’s actually the heart of the gospel.
Theese People thought the primary need of the parylitic was external.

Application
Focus on the internal not just te external
focus on yourself you can not win someone to christ if you are not first
Now it came to pass that a group existed who called themselves fishermen. And lo, there were many fish in the waters all around.
In fact, the whole area was surrounded by streams and lakes filled with fish. And the fish were hungry.
“Week after week, month after month, and year after year, these who called themselves fishermen met in meetings and talked about their call to fish, the abundance of fish, and how they might go about fishing. Year after year they carefully defined what fishing means, defended fishing as an occupation and declared that fishing is always to be a primary task of fishermen.
“Continually, they searched for new and better methods of fishing and for new and better definitions of fishing. They created witty slogans and displayed them on big, beautiful banners.
“These fishermen built large, beautiful buildings called “Fishing Headquarters.” The plea was that everyone should be a fisherman and every fisherman should fish. One thing they didn’t do, however: They did not fish.
“In addition to meeting regularly, they organized a board to send out fishermen to other places where there were many fish. The board hired staffs and appointed committees and held many meetings to define fishing, to defend fishing and to decide what new streams should be thought about. But the staff and committee members did not fish.
“Large, elaborate and expensive training centers were built whose original and primary purpose was to teach fishermen how to fish. Over the years, courses were offered on the needs of fish, the nature of fish, where to find fish, the psychological reactions of fish and how to approach and feed fish.
“Those who taught had doctorates in fishology, but the teachers did not fish. They only taught fishing. Year after year, after tedious training, many graduated and were given fishing licenses. They were sent to do full-time fishing, some to distant waters, which were filled with fish. Many who felt the call to be fishermen responded. They were commissioned and sent to fish. But like the fishermen back home, they never fished.
“They engaged in all kinds of other occupations. Some felt their job was to relate to the fish in a good way so the fish would know the difference between good and bad fishermen. Others felt that simply letting the fish know they were nice, land-loving neighbors and how loving and kind they were was enough.
“Now it’s true that many of the fishermen sacrificed and put up with all kinds of difficulties. Some lived near the water and bore the smell of dead fish every day. They received the ridicule of some who made fun of their fishermen’s clubs and the fact that they claimed to be fishermen yet never fished.
“Imagine how hurt some were when one day a person suggested that those who don’t fish were really not fishermen, no matter how much they claimed to be. Yet it did sound correct. Is a person a fisherman if, year after year, he never fishes? More plainly stated: Is one really following if he isn’t fishing?”
It is time Christians started casting our nets
