Genesis 1:26 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Out of all things God had made, even though they reflect him (), do not even come close to this final and culminating act. God creates man in His image and likeness.
Genesis 1:26 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
-We have been created for dominion over the earth. Every living creature, every plant. In other words, this world is ours to rule.
Image - Idol or carving. God literally formed us to be like Him. He formed us and made us to be a representation and an image of himself.
Outside of Genesis, a selem is a religious object, like idols or carvings.
in the same way, Adam fathered seth, after his image and likeness. ().
Likeness - almost the same. A carving or a form. A son in the likeness of his father, a man in the likeness of God.
When you look at each other, you see the closest thing on earth to God.
Genesis 1:26 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 1:28 ESV
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Dominion - rule or to have authority. To exercise dominion, rule or authority.
Subdue - the earth and the animals. Used 14 times in OT, often when a nation defeats another in battle and they become the winners slaves. In the same way humanitys mandate is to conquer the earth and rule it.
Genesis 2:7 ESV
then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Formed, shaped or carved. Fashioned.
Breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. It is significant that breath and spirit “Ruakh” are the same word.
נְשָׁמָה‎ (nĕšāmâ). n. fem. breath, spirit. Primarily refers to breath; can also refer to the human spirit or to the Spirit of God.
Like רוּחַ‎ (rûaḥ), nĕšāmâ can mean “breath” or “spirit”; however, unlike rûaḥ, it does not mean “wind.” Some passages use it in parallel with rûaḥ, either to refer to God’s Spirit (e.g. ) or to refer to the spirit that he gives to people (e.g., ). According to , the nĕšāmâ of God in humans gives them insight (). In , the breath (nĕšāmâ) of God enables Adam to become a living soul (נֶפֶשׁ‎, nepeš).1

Genesis 2:8–17 ESV
And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Belonging - The home created for man.
-God created a place for man to dwell.
-a garden v.8
-pleasant to the sight v.9
-good for food v.9
-distinct trees for special purpose v.9
-River watering the garden, becomming 4 rivers.
>For watering and nurturing
>For cleaning and play
>A picture of abundance
-The rivers:
> v.11 Pishon having gold and precious stones
>v.13 long aroung whole land
>v.14 Tigris & Euphrates - huge rivers.
Again, a picture of abundance.
God put the man in the Garden to work it and keep it. God gave the commission and the provision and the strength.
Genesis 2:18–23 ESV
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
Genesis 1:27 ESV
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
-This is a woman, being made out of man. Not saying worth less. The creation of woman is with man in , both together at the climax of creation. They both were the best and most valuable in all creation, both made in the image of God. Neither was one more valuable than the other.
-This is a story showing how nothing in creation can take the place of a husband and wife. These have been created, man wih a need, woman to fill it. In the very creation of humanity there was a place for them.
-Application
- Married - see the biblical place and primacy put on marriage. Value the marriage higher than you value any earthly thing. Value it lower than you value obedience to the creator, who created you.
-Single - As Jesus married the church (spiritually), and Paul in his ministry was unmarried, so to those who have the gift of celebacy can use it for the kingdom of God.
-Both - Know that marriage itself is temporary. Created in the beginning, is an integral part of this era of human history, but that in the New Heaven and Earth, there will be no marriage but one - Christ & Church. Keep in perspective that our marriage is temporary, and live marriage out looking to that final day of culmination.
Psalm 8:4–8 ESV
what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
Psalm 21:1–7 ESV
O Lord, in your strength the king rejoices, and in your salvation how greatly he exults! You have given him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head. He asked life of you; you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever. His glory is great through your salvation; splendor and majesty you bestow on him. For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence. For the king trusts in the Lord, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.
Psalm 139:13–16 ESV
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
