Draw Near to God, 10:19-22
Draw Near to God, 10:19-22
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,
by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,
and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
Heb 10:
IL: OT the way was closed:
Ark/Most holy/veil/ holy place/ courtyard/alter gate
EX: They way to God is open
EX: The way to God is open
What we have:
We have confidence
To enter the holy place
By the blood of Jesus
Sin has been dealt with
He has removed the sin and its consequences
Through the veil of His flesh
When His flesh was torn to pay for sins and open the way, the veil at the temple was torn as well.
And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
Mt
He has removed the barrier
Furthermore, He has removed the barrier
OT Temple: the veil separated holy from most holy place
Only High Priest could enter 1 time a year on Day of Atonement
The people would eagerly wait the priest’s return.
Jesus didn’t return, instead He opened the veil itself!
We have access to Him while we await His return.
Sin is a barrier between us and a holy God
That barrier is removed and we pass through a new curtain, Jesus!
We have a great Priest
Melchizedek order
One who represents us
Offers sacrifices on our behalf
Teaches us the things of God
So draw near!
Be born again
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
sincerity- true heart
no ulterior motives
security- full assurance
complete confidence in the promises of God
salvation- hearts sprinkled
made holy by the act of saving us
sanctification- pure water
Hebrew people would recognize the symbology
priests constantly washed, sprinkled with blood, etc.
Christ washes us and makes us holy.
His word purifies us and cleans our lives
Draw close to God
All barriers are removed, so we can get close to God!
He is our Father!
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
we can get close to GOD and remain there
As a loving Father, He is open to us and desires a relationship with us.
AP: Benefits of drawing near:
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
He draws near to us
A close relationship with God
Hold to the Hope We Possess, 10:23
Hold to the Hope We Possess, 10:23
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Hold Fast
Hold Fast
WORD STUDY: Holding on, perseverance of saints, is the human side of eternal security
Not done to maintain salvation but DUE to salvation
The confession of Hope
We have hope in Christ
The gospel brings hope
Hope of a relationship with God
Hope of resurrection
Hope of ultimate justice being served.
without waivering
allow now inclination to stray from the path to room to grow and distract us
Hold on and keep holding on
Based on His faithfulness
Our confidence is based upon God’s faithfulness.
He holds us.
He fulfills His promises and keeps His word.
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
He keeps His covenant
if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
Even when we can’t be faithful, HE is faithful
When we are weak, HE is strong
Encourage One Another, 19:24-25
Encourage One Another, 19:24-25
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Heb 10:24-25
Yes, salvation and your relationship with God is personal, however, it also has a corporate side.
Here that corporate nature is addressed.
24And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Consider one another
Mutual encouragement is crucial
Yes, there are strength in numbers
We are to consider each other
contemplate how our life impacts the rest of the body
Stir up love and good works
Stir up love and good works

love and good deeds
example of doing good in face of difficulty:
We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia,
for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.
For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord,
begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—
and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.
Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace.
But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also.
Not forsaking our assembling
Meet with each other
collective and corporate worship is a vital component in the life of a believer.
Special mention is made of the return of Christ approaching
probably a warning against the coming apostasy
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,
who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
the deeper we get into that apostasy in our culture, the more we need each other to encourage us
