He is Greater

The letter to the Hebrews was written to encourage Christians in a time of trial. It does so by focusing on the absolute supremacy and sufficiency of Jesus Christ. While God spoke in the past “many times and in many ways,” he has now spoken to us “by his Son,” Jesus Christ, who is the “exact imprint” of God’s nature and who “upholds the universe by the word of his power” (1:1–3). Jesus accomplished complete salvation for all who trust in him (1:1–10:18). We dare not “neglect such a great salvation” (2:3; 5:12–6:20; 10:19–39). Rather, in our faith and in our everyday living, we should imitate the example of Christ and of those on the honor roll of faith (chs. 11–13). This letter, whose author is unknown, was probably written between A.D. 60 and 70.

Hebrews, I believe, will challenge us, while we read it, like hardly any other book. It screams of context context context. It is always pointed back to the past to reveal our future.
We must remember as we read through Hebrews that the Bible is multifaceted and its prophesies are multi-layered. Meaning, as Isaiah prophesies the coming deliverer for Israel, He is our deliverer as well.
Before we start the journey we need to know where we’re going...
Hebrews has a climax in chapter 10
Hebrews 10:10 ESV
10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Hebrews 10:14 ESV
14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
Hebrews 10:17–18 ESV
17 then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
Hebrews 10:32–39 ESV
32 But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37 For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; 38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” 39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
Hebrews 1:1 ESV
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,
Every story whispers His name...
This opening statement, as Paul often does in his letters, tells the reader what’s coming next. We’re going to start looking back at how God spoke.
Hebrews 1:2 ESV
2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
last days…we were saying some believe that these are the last days. There is evidence that they believed those were the last days as well.
spoken to us…Jesus is the Word (Logos)
John 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Maybe that Word doesn’t mean Jesus (some would say)… Well...
John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Heir of all things… we are the heirs of God through Jesus.
Romans 8:12–17 ESV
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Galatians 3:29 ESV
29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
Titus 3:7 ESV
7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Hebrews 6:17 ESV
17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath,
Hebrews 11:7 ESV
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
James 2:5 ESV
5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?
We are not heirs like Prince Harry who has to wait until six people die before fully taking hold of his inheritance. Our inheritance is full and complete when we believe in Jesus, sans the ‘living in paradise for perfect eternity’ part.
Hebrews 1:2 ESV
2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
He created all things...
John 1:3 ESV
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

RADIANT, rā´di-ant (נָהַר, nāhar, “to sparkle,” i.e. [fig.] be cheerful; hence [from the sheen of a running stream], to flow, i.e. [fig.] assemble; flow [together], be lightened): ARV substitutes the active “radiant” for the passive “were lightened” in Ps 34:5; Isa 60:5 (ERV, AV “flow together”). As the earth and moon, both being dark, face a common sun and lighten each other, they are not only lightened, but radiant.

The route “auge” means “dawn or daybreak” - it is the flowing of the Son through His followers that creates a radiance no one can comprehend or understand...
the exact imprint…representation: the Greek word charakter
2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV
4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Colossians 1:15 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
When we commune with Jesus we commune with the God of the Universe
He upholds the universe by the word of His power...
John 1:3 ESV
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Hebrews 11:3 ESV
3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

word of power As God the Father brought the world into being through speech (Gen 1:1–2; compare Heb 11:3), so the Son sustains all things by means of His speech.

Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

The sacrifices temporarily restored people’s relationship with God by repairing the damage caused by sin and guilt.

He sat down… Psalm 110

Instead of having to continually offer sacrifice (Heb 10:1), the Son is able to sit down—His work is complete.

Hebrews 1:4 ESV
4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Now we start dispelling what people may put their faith in…1st is angels
Hebrews 1:5 ESV
5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”?
Psalm 2:7 ESV
7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
This reference also used in reference to Jesus’ priestly work (Heb. 5.5)
Hebrews 1:6 ESV
6 And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”
Romans 8:29 ESV
29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
Psalm 89:27 ESV
27 And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
Speaking of David which then flows down (or up) to Jesus as layers of prophesies revealed
Deuteronomy 32:43 ESV
43 “Rejoice with him, O heavens; bow down to him, all gods, for he avenges the blood of his children and takes vengeance on his adversaries. He repays those who hate him and cleanses his people’s land.”
Hebrews 1:7 ESV
7 Of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.”
angels winds
Psalm 104:4 ESV
4 he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire.
flame of fire… a regular element of a visible appearance of God
Hebrews 1:8–9 ESV
8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”
scepter of uprightness (righteousness)… indicating that His kingdom is characterized by righteousness
Isaiah 61:1 ESV
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
This sounds similar (or exactly the same) as what Jesus read in the synagogue in
Luke 4:16–21 ESV
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Hebrews 1:10–12 ESV
10 And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; 11 they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, 12 like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.”
Psalm 102:25–27 ESV
25 Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, 27 but you are the same, and your years have no end.
Hebrews 1:12 ESV
12 like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.”
But You are the same...
Hebrews 13:8 ESV
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Hebrews 1:13 ESV
13 And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?
Psalm 110:1 ESV
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
which echoes
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

The imagery likely refers to hieroglyphics on the footstools of Egyptian kings that depicted foreign enemies—symbolizing their subjugation

Picture it! your enemies under your feet as footstools! YES!…NO!
How does this relate to “loving your enemies”? Don’t picture your enemy under your feet. We called to love our enemies. What this is talking about is the enemy of sin and death, principalities and powers that oppose Jesus.
NOW! Picture the thing or things your struggle with the most; the thorn in your flesh, as Paul puts it. Picture that under your feet defeated! You are a victor because Jesus has won the battle over sin and death.
1 Corinthians 15:55–57 ESV
55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
I have the victory! …because of Jesus!
Hebrews 1:14 ESV
14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?
those who are going to inherit salvation… believers in the Son
Matthew 25:34 ESV
34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
We have hope for the future because Jesus is greater than…EVERYTHING!
