To better understand these men, look at the below information of the importance of these men’s positions.
The Butler-
not only the cup-bearer, but overseer of the royal vineyards, as well as the cellars; having, probably, some hundreds of people under him.
The Baker-
or cook, had the superintendence of every thing relating to the providing and preparing of meats for the royal table. Both officers, especially the former, were, in ancient Egypt, always persons of great rank and importance; and from the confidential nature of their employment, as well as their access to the royal presence, they were generally the highest nobles or princes of the blood.
Where is the jail that these men are placed in? Why is this significant?
(This was not the usual jail. This is a special jail for enemies of the crown. As such, it is on the grounds of the home of the Captain of the King’s bodyguard, i.e. Potiphar. It is significant as this is where Joseph is housed and as we will see, it will eventually give Joseph the ear of the king/Pharaoh).
Who put Joseph in charge of these men and why?
These men were not just any prisoners. They were not even dangerous criminals. Joseph was probably put in charge to see to their comfort until the Pharaoh decided what to do with them as they would be considered somewhat “special” cases. This also shows evidence of Potiphar’s trust in Joseph even here in prison.
Joseph has been through a lot on account of dreams. What does verse 8 tell you about his attitude about dreams? Is this surprising? Why?
Joseph still believes in God and the dreams God sends. It is surprising since his dream is in part what lead to his current slavery. Yet, he still believes in God and the dreams God sends.

Discuss the chief baker and his dream. Why is he so eager to hear Joseph’s response to his dream?
Discuss why this occurs on Pharaoh’s birthday.
Upon news of what has occurred with the cupbearer and baker, what effect would this have on Joseph and his own situation? What would be his natural expectations?
He would be encouraged about the outcome of his own dream and interpretation. He would be feeling encouraged that his situation was about to change for the better.
How was Joseph right in his expectations and how as he wrong?
He was correct in feeling encouraged and confirmed about his own dream, however, he would soon find it would not happen as quickly as I am sure he expected.
Why do you think the cupbearer forgot?
How long do you think Joseph waited before he realized he had been forgotten?
How do you think Joseph felt as time went by? What has occurred that may give him encouragement in the waiting?
What can we learn from this story? How can the events in this story encourage us? What cautions can we learn from this story?
God works in ways we can never really expect. He is good at encouraging us, but we have to be careful not to assume we know the timing of things or the exact way that things will happen. We can be encouraged in the difficult times that God is at work and never forgets us. He always has a plan and they will be fulfilled in His own way and time. We just need to trust Him.
