Equipping - The providing of all necessary facilities for achieving a task. Scripture suggests that God does not provide tasks for believers without also providing the gifts which are needed to equip believers for those tasks.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Scripture provides examples of individuals who have been equipped (by God) to carry out tasks or responsibilities of a spiritual nature.
Jesus Christ was equipped for his work Isa 61:1-2 See also Ps 72:1; Isa 50:4-7; Mt 12:18; Isa 42:1; Lk 4:18-19; 19:31; Jn 3:34; Ac 10:38; Heb 10:5
Isaiah 61:1–2 NKJV
1 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,
NT parallel
Luke 4:21 NKJV
21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
God’s people are equipped for service. In the OT Ex 4:10-12
We see God equipping Moses for the task He (God) has set before him. (Moses)
Exodus 4:10–12 NKJV
10 Then Moses said to the Lord, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” 11 So the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? 12 Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.”
Bezalel and Aholiab: Ex 31:1-6; 35:30-36:2; Lev 8:7-9; Jdg 3:10
Exodus 31:1–6 NKJV
1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, 4 to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, 5 in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship. 6 “And I, indeed I, have appointed with him Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have put wisdom in the hearts of all the gifted artisans, that they may make all that I have commanded you:
Gideon: Jdg 6:14,34; Jdg 11:29; 14:19
Samson: 1Sa 10:10
Solomon: 1Ki 3:7-9; 2Ch 2:12; 2Ki 2:9
Elisha: Ne 13:9; Isa 6:6-7; Jer 1:9; Eze 1:1; 3:23
In the NT God reveals to us the supernatural nature of His presence that equips all who follow Christ as Lord and Savior as vessels prepared for every good work.
2 Timothy 2:20–21 NKJV
20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.
In each and every person within NT we see this same pattern of being equipped by God for the good works of God.
John the Baptist; Lk 1:41,67
Zechariah; Lk 12:33; Ac 4:8
Peter; Ac 6:3; 9:17
Ananias; Ac 11:24
Barnabas; Ro 13:12; Eph 4:12; 6:11-18; Php 4:19; 2Ti 3:16-17; Heb 13:20-21; 1Pe 3:15
So what does that reveal to us. It tells us that it is God who equips every believer for the His spiritual tasks.
Believers are equipped for spiritual tasks
So how does God go about equipping the saints?
First..
By the call of Jesus Christ Mt 4:19 pp Mk 1:17 See also Mk 10:24-31; Lk 9:1-2; 10:1-3; Jn 1:35-42
If we notice closely that God through His son Christ when Jesus calling those to follow Him, that He would make them fishers of men.
Matthew 4:19 NKJV
19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Secondly, God equips the saints...
By spiritual gifts 1Co 12:7 See also Ac 6:3-6; Ro 12:6-8; 1Co 12:8-11,27-31; Eph 4:7,11-12
1 Corinthians 12:7 NKJV
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
1 Corinthians 12:8–11 NKJV
8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
Not only does God equip the saints by the call to come to Jesus and by spiritual gifts that He gives but also...
By the word of God 2Ti 2:15 See also Col 3:16; 2Ti 3:16-17; 2Pe 1:19; 1Jn 2:1
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Dividing means to analyze correctly ⇔ cut straight v. — to interpret or analyze properly (perhaps by making appropriate distinctions); conceived of as cutting something in a straight line.
You can even say coloring in between the lines.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Lastly, God equips the saints...
By the empowering of the Holy Spirit Ac 2:4; 4:31; 13:9; Eph 5:18
Acts 4:31 NKJV
31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
