Jesus at the Feast of Booths
7 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. 2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. 15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
Can This Be the Christ?
25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” 30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”
Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. 34 You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”
Rivers of Living Water
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Division Among the People
40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So there was a division among the people over him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
45 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? 48 Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” 52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”

The Woman Caught in Adultery

We just got done singing
This is the time of our service that we call Praise and Worship. This is the time of the service in which we sing songs which are meant as offerings of praise to God, to Jesus
When you offer praise, it’s becuase you are convinced of who someone is.
You don’t praise someone unless you are sure in your heart that this person deserves your praise
Because, after all, it is a sacrifice. It takes humility. It takes lowering yourself and elevating the other person and so you want to be sure that he/she deserves it.
Today we are going to get back into the book of John
We are going to chapter 7
And in this chapter, John is going to continue addressing these two questions:
Who is this Man?
What is your response?
In particular, what are you going to do with His words?
We are going to see people trying to figure out who this man really is anyway.
To His brothers, He is just that: a brother. A half brother at that. Worthy of their scorn and redicule
Imagine having a brother who’s perfect and who’s always right.
To the crowd he is confusing
to some, he’s just some guy from Smallville up in Galilee (they think that when the Messiah appears, no one will know where he comes from) (vs. 41)
But, where did he learn to teach like this?
And he CANT be the
Others say, maybe he’s The Prophet (vs. 40)
We see this same speculation in chapter 1
still others say, maybe He is the Messiah, or The Christ (vs. 41)
But how can that be since He’s from Galilee?
Isn’t the Messiah supposed to come from Bethlehem?
But there are darker accusations and speculations.
Some say that He’s a deceiver (vs. 12 “He is leading people astray)
Pretty close or equal to comparing Jesus with The Deceiver, satan
And still others conclude that He is actually demon possessed (vs. 20)
We see the darkness and depravity of the human mind and the twistedness that sin brings.
That Jesus, the righteous Son of God, could be accused of basically making a pact with the Deceiver of men
To the Jews (religious leaders) he is a dangerous man, an insurrectionist; someone worthy of arrest and possible execution
So there is a lot of confusion. Who is this man?
And that’s not just a question for the folks in this chapter,
It’s a question for us too. Who is this man? Do you know?
But the people are not only trying to figure out who he is but how they should respond as well.
We are going to see:
Scorn—by His brothers
To their credit, at least some of Jesus’ half brothers did believe in him later on
The Lexham Bible Dictionary Jesus’ Siblings in the New Testament
In Mark 6:3, the crowd at Nazareth associates Jesus with His family, mentioning sisters and naming James, Joses, Judas, and Simon as His brothers (see also Matt 13:55–56).
The Epistle of James is attributed to Jesus’ brother, James
Jude (or Judas) identifies himself as the brother of James so it’s believed that he is the half brother of Jesus as well
So we can’t get down too hard on these guys.
But at this time in their lives, they are having a difficult time accepting their older half brother
Confusion and suspicion—by the people. who is this guy anyway?
Hostility—by the religious leaders
Astonishment—by the soldiers sent to arrest Him
Caution and reason—by Nicodemus
We are going to see a lot of different responses to Jesus. But none of them are the response of praise. None of them are the response of worship
None of the reponses truly recognize who Jesus truly is.
Some of them speculate that He really is the Christ, but they don’t worship Him.
And why is there such confusion about Jesus? Why such hostility? Why such division?
Is it because of what He did?
Is it because of what He did?
We read that he regularly healed people and did other acts of kindness on the Sabbath
He broke taboos by eating and associating with sinners and other questionable people
Is that why there was such hostility toward Him?
Or is it because of what He said?
We saw in chapter 6 that people abandoned Him and fled because of His words.
Remember that there was nothing special about the appearance of Jesus. He looked like an average Galilean man
And yet He said extraordinary things!
He made extraordinary claims!
I AM the Bread of Life
I AM the Bread that came down from heaven
I AM the Bread that came down from heaven
The Father has granted me to have life in myself
I can give you living water
He said things that were hard or impossible for people to accept
You must eat my flesh and drink my blood
If you believe in me, you will have eternal life
I can only do what my Father does
To the Pharisees, “You do not have the word of God abiding in you”
Jesus says in verse 7, “The world hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil”
My question that I leave for us today is:
“Who is Jesus and what are you (we) going to do with Him? How are we going to respond to His words?”
After what? Well, after the events in chapter 6.
Remember that in chapter 6 we talked about how the folks he was talking to had to make a decision as well: Am I a Fan or am I a Follower?
Am I in it for the experience and the thrill, and what I can get out of it?
or am I truly ready to lay down my life and be 100% all out for Him?
And we see that the majority of the people decided that they were fans and they went away.
Now it’s chapter 7. Commentators believe that the words “After this” span a time period of about 6-7 months.
We noted that the events in Chapter 6 took place around the time of the Passover
And now we are approaching the Feast of Tabernacles
John doesn’t record Jesus doing anything during this time, but we know that He did because the other Gospels record it.
For example, Matthew tells of him going into the region of Tyre and Sidon where he had the exchange with the Caananite woman who begged him to heal her daughter who had a demon
And Matthew also talks about the Transfiguration
But these events are not part of John’s narrative. He has other things on his mind
