Intro

Rejoice in the Lord! An exclamation that rightly sums up the essence of Paul’s epistle to the believers in Philippi. The word “rejoice” is found over and over again in this letter. That’s meaningful, coming from a man that’s locked up in prison. Paul has no problem with repeating himself. He’s not worried if it’s tacky or not (vs. 1). He’s telling them, you’ve heard this already, but it’s important, so it’s my joy to go over this again. That’s what we do as people, if we think some information is important, we repeat it, drill it over and over again, absorb it.
This passage is all about the righteousness of our Lord Jesus, and I identify with Paul in that I take great joy in standing up here and preaching a message that you’ve heard many times before. Not a sermon, but a message you’ve heard before: that we have no righteousness of our own, but the righteousness of Jesus is fully sufficient to make us right with God.
This message is essential to the gospel and must be correctly understood. For unbelievers, that they might be reconciled to God. For believers, two reasons. 1- That we might have confidence in Jesus. 2- That we might have an appetite for Jesus.
