Luke 4:14–16 NIV
14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. 16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,
Luke 4:14-
This is one place, among others, where the Bible says it was Jesus’ custom to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath Day.
Any town that had ten Jewish males could establish a synagogue.
On the Sabbath, in the synagogue, they would pray, sing, read the Word, and listen to a sermon.
Does that sound familiar? It should, because it is the pattern of worship the early church followed and that we still follow today in our worship services. Instead of Saturday, we meet on the Lord’s Day, the Day of Resurrection, the first day of the week.
Notice in v. 16 that it was Jesus’ custom to go to the synagogue at the appointed time.
I propose to you that if Jesus faithfully attended worship services then we should follow His example.
In we see that it was also Paul’s custom to faithfully attend worship services at the appointed time.
Acts 17:1–4 NIV
1 When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,” he said. 4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.
Here we see it was Paul’s custom to attend worship. In Paul, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit says:
1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV
1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
Since both Jesus and Paul attended worship faithfully we should follow their example. If they needed to attend faithfully, how much more do we need to attend faithfully. Let us follow their example and be faithful to God’s house. As we do so we will grow in faith.
