The Lords Great Desire

Luke 22:14–16 NKJV
14 When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
Intro: The Lord ’s Supper is a wonderful time where we come together to remember the Lord’s death until He returns.
It is a time for us to reflect on our individual lives to help us reflect on our relationship with God. It is time for us to examine our hearts, our minds, our motives, our ambitions, our thoughts, and actions to see if they in line with God’s will and His word.
It’s not only s time of reflection and examination; it’s time to take part in one of the two ordinances of the church.
Matthew 18:16 NKJV
16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’
Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Jesus said “I will build my church”.
After Pentecost then churches were started. The Lord’s Supper through the teaching of Jesus became a part of the church service. It is one of the commandments of Jesus for His followers. That is who it is for. Elab on what a follower of Jesus is.
Followers of Jesus are to be scripturally baptized. And are to take part in the Lords Supper.
The Lord’s Supper doesn’t give saving grace upon anyone-we are saved by grace.
Holman New Testament Commentary: Luke B. Preparing for Glory to Come: The Last Supper (22:7–38)

22:15–16. Jesus wanted to share one last Passover with his disciples. Jewish religious leaders wanted to kill him and prevent him from doing any more teaching or performing any more miracles in Jerusalem. He knew what lay ahead of him in Jerusalem. But now, safely cloistered from his enemies, he had a final opportunity to prepare his followers for the events of the future. He needed one last time to give them a symbol to teach them the meaning of who he was and what he had done for them. Thus, he ate his final Passover with his disciples, knowing they would not share such a meal together until the great eschatological banquet around God’s table in heaven. Then their redemption would be complete. Then Jesus’ preaching that the kingdom had come near would be complete, and the kingdom would be fully present for eternity.

Matthew 22:15 NKJV
15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk.
a. The desire that Jesus had translates; “With earnest desire, great desire: It was truly His heart’s desire to eat the Passover with them: Before I suffer.
heart’s desire to eat the Passover with them: Before I suffer.
b. Why would Jesus have a great desire to have this meal His disciples?
c. If we understand why He had this desire, what difference does it make today? What difference will it make to everyone that is here today?
2. Why did Jesus have a desire to eat the Passover meal with His disciples?
a. Because it was the Passover fulfillment.
b. In we find the institution of the Passover. The Israelites had been in bondage to the Egyptians, and the Lord was going to set them free.
c. He would pass through the land and kill the firstborn of everyone home that was not protected by the blood of the Lamb.
3. The Passover Lamb pictures Christ our sacrifice.
“in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin”
Hebrews 4:15 NKJV
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
a. He had no sin, He was blameless, He was perfect.
Exodus
Exodus 12:5 NKJV
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats.
b. The lamb had to be without blemish, and male of the first year.
c. Without blemish: No cuts, spotless, no broken bones. Like Jesus who was perfect, without blemish.

Exodus 12:12–13 NKJV
12 ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. 13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
e. When the Lord passed through the camp in Egypt, He was not looking for people that were worthy, people that were good, He was looking for the blood.
f. One day we will all stand before the Lord. He want be looking at whether we are worthy, how good we have been, our church membership, He’ll been looking for the blood of His son Jesus that covers our sins.
g. Those that do not have the blood of Jesus will bow down and confess Him as Lord, but it will be too late.
e. The Lord gives everyone the opportunity to come under the protection of the blood.
4. JTB said of Jesus: “Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world”
a. On the cross He did that on the cross. He cried out, “It is finished” What was finished? Everything necessary to purchase salvation for all.
b. Jesus did all that was necessary for you me or any other person to be saved.
5. Another reason Jesus desired to have the Passover meal with His disciples is, He wanted to these last moments of intimacy with them.
5. Another reason Jesus desired to have the Passover meal with His disciples is, He wanted to these last moments of intimacy with them.
a. For over 3 years Jesus had spent so much time with them. He taught them, mentored them, protected them, ate with them, He laughed with them, cried with them.
b. He shared His heart with them; He allowed them to be a part of Him and His work.
e. He watched them grow from common business men and common everyday workers, and now they were men turn the world upside down with His story. In just a few hours while in the garden of Gethsemane (where He would pray) Judas would lead the mob to Him. He would be arrested
f. Falsely tried, mocked, beaten, whipped, spat on, hung on a cross where He would bear the wrath of God. On that cross He would bear the sin of everyone that ever lived.
g. Knowing all that would take place He wanted to spend time with His disciples. What great love He had for them, that might spent a little more time with them before He suffered.
7. We no longer have the Passover meal; we have a time of observing the Lord's supper.
a. The Lord's supper reminds us of what Jesus did for us.
b. The Lord’s supper is more than some religious ceremony. We are here to remember that Jesus the Son of God came to earth lived a sinless life, and died for us.
8. Taking the Lord's Supper should remind us we high a higher calling in life.
a. Jesus performed great miracles; he took care of the needy. But His purpose for coming to the earth was to “seek and saved that which was lost” Elab
