John 13:3 ESV
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,
Recognition that Jesus was the Son of God and he has all things and yet he serves in the lowlest fashion. God condescends himself to man. When we do it we do it as equals. God wants to serve us
John 13:4 ESV
rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.
John 13:6 ESV
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”
This maybe saying Lord in the sense of the Divine Name. Therefore like Romans perhaps Peter didn’t want a God who humbled himself. Or there was too much pride in Peter to receive service.
Pharisee mentality. We also have a problem of recieving the free gift of salvation we want to have a part in it.
“So no man can boast”
WE have problems sometimes recieving from other people. Its hard to be served. Hard ot have our feet washed.
John 13:8 ESV
Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”
John 13:10 ESV
Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.”
You are washed an made clean by Jesus at salvation are feet getting dirty from time to time but we are clean
John 13:12 ESV
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?
Jesus modeled teaching
John 13:15 ESV
For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.
We should serve other just like Jesus did. The greatest in the kingdom is the least in the kingdom.
Luke 22:24–27 ESV
A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
We are to be servants of one antoerh. We are to act like the loving God
