Verse 14: But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
Some background on this text that this happens right after the Holy Spirit came down
But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, is ready to preach a sermon that led to 3,000 being saved as it says in verse 41...
41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.
Verse 15: “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;
15 “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;
So many people thought the disciples where drunk
Why?
Imagine if a person who only understood Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek heard someone speak Spanish
And remember this was not the 21st Century...
There was no TV or radio or Rosetta Stone to learn other languages
Some people thought the disciples where speaking gibberish...
But in fact, they spoke various languages
Verse 16: But this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:
16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:
And this should not have been a complete suprise
Why?
Because this was prophesied by Joel...
Specifically
Before we read what Joel’s prophecy said...

Verse 17: ‘AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,’ God says, ‘THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;
17 ‘AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,’ God says,
‘THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND;
‘THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND;
AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY,
AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY,
This prophecy is in reference to the Holy Spirit coming down on all belivers
AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS,
AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS,
This was not the case in the Old Testament
AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;
Under the old covenant...
AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;
The Holy Spirit would come on someone as certain times and that person could lose the Holy Spirit
This is why David, after seeing Saul lose the Holy Spirit, begged God not to take away the Holy Spirit from him in ...
Due to murder and adultery he commited
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
“Last Days” is referring to the Apocalypse in which point we can expect more visions and dreams
These visions and dreams will never contradict the Bible...
So any claim like this must be tested with the Scriptures
Verse 18: EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy.
18 EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN,
I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT
I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT
Prophesy can be attributed to visions of future evens but most prophesy is the proclamation of God’s truth...
And they shall prophesy.
So a preacher or Sunday school teacher that is sharing God’s Word would be considered prophesying
And they shall prophesy.
Verse 19: ‘AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.
19 ‘AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE
AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW,
AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW,
“Wonders” is the amazement people experience when witnessing supernatural works or miracles
BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.
“Signs” point to the power of God behind miracles
BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.
Marvels have no value unless they point to God and His truth
Verse 20: ‘THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME.
20 ‘THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS
AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD,
AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD,
These phenomena are all connected with events surrounding Christ’s second coming...
BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME.
And they signal the establishment of the God’s new earthly kingdom
BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME.
Verse 21: ‘AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.’
21 ‘AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.’
This truth is also found in
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him;
13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
So, up to that hour of judgment and wrath, any who turn to Christ as Lord and Savior will be saved

Verse 22: “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—
Peter is now drawing the attention of the crowd to Jesus...
And making it clear that Jesus’ works proved who He says He was...
And proved that the Father accepted His sacrifice by His conquering of death
Verse 23: This Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.
23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.
This sacrifice...
This act of love...
Was not an accident...
This was God’s plan all along...
This was both foreknown by God and predetermined...
However, human responsibility is not void because of this fact
Peter makes it very clear here...
He said “You nailed [Him] to a cross...
By the hands of godless men”
By
It may be God’s plan but every evil doer is responsible for his part and Peter does not hold back on who is guilty
Verse 24: “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
Since Christ was sinless...
24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
His sacrifice was accepted by the Father...
This resulted in death losing it’s sting
Because Jesus was so powerful due to being fully divine...
And In His perfect obedience to the Father...
God kept His promises and purposes which resulted in Jesus overcoming death
Verses 25-28: “For David says of Him, ‘I SAW THE LORD ALWAYS IN MY PRESENCE; FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN. ‘THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE; BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY. ‘YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.’
25 “For David says of Him,

Verse 28: ‘YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.’

This is a quote of from
This text is pointing to the resurrection of Jesus, noting that David spoke of God not abandoning him to death
Noting that David spoke of God not abandoning him to death. He then reasoned that, because David died, the psalm must have been speaking about one of his descendants. Since Jesus is the only one who conquered death and is a descendant of David, he must be the promised Messiah whom David foresaw
Peter will then reason in the following text that, because David died, the psalm must have been speaking about one of his descendants
Since Jesus is the only one who conquered death and is a descendant of David, he must be the promised Messiah whom David foresaw
Before we explore what Peter says...

Verse 29: “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
So, note that Peter says this with “confidence”
This is a radical change in his attitude before Pentecost
29 “Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Peter says that it is clear that David died and was buried for the 1st century Jews knew where his tomb was
Peter continues
Verse 30: “And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE,
So, Peter says that David was a prophet and had revelations from God
David knew that God swore that one of his descendents would sit on his throne forever
30 “And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE,
Verse 31: He looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY.
David saw that this spoke of the resurrection of Jesus for He never experienced hell and His flesh never suffered decay

31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY.
Verse 32: “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.
Peter makes it clear that God the Father raised Jesus...
And that all where a witness to this fact
32 “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.
This belief in this truth is essential to Christianity and a genuine relationship with God
Many claim to be “christian” and don’t believe the resurrection...
Unfortunately, even those held in high esteem like MLK
says that that is impossible
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
Additionally, Paul said in
19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.
21 For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.
17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.
21 For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.
19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.
21 For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.
Our faith is worthless without the resurrection
Inerrancy of the Scriptures and proper doctrine matter
Verse 33: “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.
“Exalted to the right hand of God” is another way to say that Jesus is equal to God the Father
Jesus also came with the promise of the Holy Spirit to His followers...
33 “Therefore having been exalted ato the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.
Which Peter says is now on display for those listening to him and the rest of the apostles
Verse 34: “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: ‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, “SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
34 “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says:
‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
This is a quote from
‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
This again refers to Jesus being at the right hand of the Father
“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
Verse 35: UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.” ’
The reality is that the end of our time on this earth will result in the defeat of all enemies that will be a footstool to the feet of Jesus
35 UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.” ’
Verse 36: “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Peter wants all to know...
And with absolute certainty...
That Jesus is both Lord and Messiah
The very Jesus that was crucified by those whom Peter was speaking to
This is a great example of how we must preach the truth no matter how offensive it may sound
And our truth we preach should be founded on the gospel message that leads to salvation
This is the powerful and spirit filled message that Peter preached and lead over 3,000 to Christ
