Intro Needed...

God provided everything they needed

Food:

Genesis 2:15–17 ESV
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Genesis 2:15–16 NIV
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;

Daily Necessities were taken care of,
They had all of Eden to enjoy
Food, didn’t need clothing or shelter
Meaningful work
Unique responsibility
Relationship with God
Familiar with the sound of God walking through the woods to meet with them
Spoke to one another like we do

Suitable helper and mate:

But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
Genesis 2:20–25 ESV
20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
Genesis 2:20-25
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”

God recognized that Adam needed a spouse/helpmate/mate
Adam had relationship with God, just like he was created to have, and yet something was missing
God met that need with “woman”
Should I go on tangent about Wife and Spirit of God being helpmate?
Adam and Eve were complete/whole/fulfilled/happy/content

The Lie

Did God actually say…?

Genesis 3:1–5 ESV
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Genesis 3:
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Did God actually say…?

“Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
God didn’t say that! Compare with what God said in 2:16 - “You are free to… but don’t go too far.”
God gave a perfectly clear commandment
But the serpent planted seeds of doubt in her mind
Two options for the translation
Questioning of God’s Word- Are you sure that’s what he said? Is that what he really meant?
Questioning of God’s goodness-You don’t mean to tell me that God has deprived you, do you?
Attack on God’s love for Eve, Caused her to doubt
God is always trying to spoil your fun… Always keeping something from you

You will surely not die...

Flat out rejection of God’s word
Claims that God is not speaking truth
ability to tell the difference between good and evil- without God
But there was no evil in the garden, why does she need this?
Contrast what the world thinks of God and what He is like
freedom with healthy boundaries
You must not eat of anything… (Satan is still up to the same trick)

For God knows...

For God knows… you will be like God - Keeping something from you
For God knows… you will be like God - Keeping something from you
You will have something that you don’t right now
ability to tell the difference between good and evil- without God
But there was no evil in the garden, why does she need this?
You will be better going after what you need yourself, God isn’t go to help you
He is telling her- Sin will make you free
He continues this lie as well
Go ahead and leave your wife, you will be free
Take out your frustrations on your boss, you will finally give him a piece of your mind
Promised freedom, but given shame
Promised to be like God, yet they hid from God
These lies are a mirage-
promises that never live up to the hype

The Act of Rebellion

Genesis 3:6 ESV
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
Genesis 3:6
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

The fruit

Eve turns around and considers the tree and it’s fruit
Can almost see her, considering it, looking at the fruit
Good, pleasant, desirable
Food, aesthetically contentment (such a pretty apple, (Steak)you had to eat it), moral/intellectual advancement
This was created by God, placed in the garden
Yet only to be enjoyed in obedience and dependence on God
The serpent offered freedom/fulfillment, delight/discovery, advancement/autonomy
God offered these too, except autonomy
Man wasn’t created to be autonomous
Fish doesn’t want water, someone doesn’t want air (doesn’t make sense)
So after the fall, yes we are still physically alive, we are here
But we are less than divinely appointed to be

The Man and Woman

She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
The woman ate first and gave it to her husband
Where was Adam?
If beside her, Why was he quiet?
If he just walked up, why did he just eat without any question?
Why did he not ask, ”Who are you talking to?” “Why…?” “Wait, no...”
Instead he just eats it.
What other Bible passages talk about the husband being the head of the home and leading?

Consequences

The serpent had promised that their eyes would be opened

The serpent had promised that their eyes would be opened
But he didn’t tell them what it would be opened to
What it would take away from them
Illustration- Isn’t that the way sin always is...
Do this, no big deal, For Eve- eat the fruit
For us- take that pill, sip that drink, flirt with that coworker, visit that site, no big deal
If we take the bait, we have no idea what it will actually take from you
If someone told you the far out consequences of what would happen when you were 16 and offered that cigarette, or drink- Never...
But it’s not like that, Eve didn’t know what would be taken
And sin is never satisfied
Knowledge of good and evil which they now knew and were experiencing
Doing good is obedience to God’s will, Evil is turning from God’s ways
Romans 5:12 ESV
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
Romans 5:12
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men
The problem was that for Adam and Eve, there was no going back

The Cover Up

Genesis 3:7 ESV
7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Instantly knew they were naked… Oh no, cover up, just grab something- leaf
But he didn’t tell them what it would be opened to
What it would take away from them
Knowledge of good and evil which they now knew and were experiencing
Doing good is obedience to God’s will, Evil is turning from God’s ways
Romans 5:12–19 NIV
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned— To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come. But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

The problem was that for Adam and Eve, there was no going back
First time in all of history- blame, hiding, separation, shame, fear, cover-up, deceit, questioning, unbelief
God in the garden
so different from the first time he saw Eve,
Nothing to cover up, be ashamed of

Now they hide something of themselves from each other
Illustration: I would say that this has continued on and on in marriages across history
How many husbands have I heard that say,”Im not going to counseling”
To me, not willing to expose myself, deep hurts/regrets/pain to anyone else
Even though that is precisely what is pushing you two apart.
You have to go there, be completely open for healing and your best marriage to develop
Adam and Eve are now separated from each other,
hiding themselves form each other
8-13
Genesis 3:8–13 ESV
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
8-13

The consequences became apparent immediately
First time in all of history- Separation, hiding, shame, fear, cover-up, deceit, blame, unbelief
For the first time ever, man and woman hid when God came near.
Made to be with him and yet they run and hide
Knowledge of Good and evil-
Now when you are with God good, you run and hide.
Illustration- Israelites telling moses in , “You talk to God and tell us what he says.”

Blame

Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten?
The woman you gave me — Its not my fault!
The serpent tricked me
You will see the responses at the fall, carried on and on in humanity

The Curse

Genesis 3:14–19 ESV
14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” 16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.” 17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Genesis 3:14-
14 The Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 19  By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
cursed are you above all livestock
and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
15  I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be contrary to your husband,
but he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18  thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19  By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.”
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

Serpent

14 The LORD God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this,

cursed are you above all livestock

and above all beasts of the field;

on your belly you shall go,

and dust you shall eat

all the days of your life.

15  I will put enmity between you and the woman,

and between your offspring and her offspring;

he shall bruise your head,

and you shall bruise his heel.”

16 To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;

in pain you shall bring forth children.

Your desire shall be contrary to your husband,

but he shall rule over you.”

17 And to Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife

and have eaten of the tree

of which I commanded you,

‘You shall not eat of it,’

cursed is the ground because of you;

in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;

18  thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;

and you shall eat the plants of the field.

19  By the sweat of your face

you shall eat bread,

till you return to the ground,

for out of it you were taken;

for you are dust,

and to dust you shall return.”

20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

vs. 14- I don’t know what the serpent was like before or how the curse affects a snake
But vs.15 is beautiful- I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Earliest promise of the coming Messiah
Romans 16:20 ESV
20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
- “And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly”
“And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly”
“her offspring” prophesying of virgin birth

Woman

Death came into being with sin, the indications of death and pain would be felt in the process of giving birth
In giving life, there will first be pain and anguish through the same experience
Also, death would be felt in the death of marriage.
The perfect marriage relationship has now been marred and thrown in confusion.
Illustration: We do alot of premarital counseling- “Marriage is hard”
desire for the husband and he will rule over you

Man

Your life will be filled with hard work and toil
The honest work that Adam was given in the garden- to manage and work it
Would not be done with sweat, tears, and blood
The earth would not give it’s fruit without cost
discouragement is mans struggle
Something good has turned to something hard because of the fall

Hope in Tragedy

Genesis 3:20 ESV
20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
- 20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
Adam may have heard hope in God’s statement to Eve
And in tragedy, he names his wife Eve- mother of all the living
But God’s work isn’t done yet
In one sentence, there are massive remifications
God made for Adam and Eve garments of skin and clothed them.
First time that any animal actually, physically died
and it was to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness.
It could just be that leather is great clothing
But I think that it is too much like the Levitical Sacrificial System and Jesus as the Lamb of God giving himself on the cross for all humanity to be a coincidence.
Earlier we referenced , speaking of Adam let’s read there again
Romans 5:18–21 ESV
Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
-
18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Throughout this year, we aren’t just going through the BIble
Pay special attention to the story of God’s salvation
God created it all, gave Eden, then when man sinned, He made a way to be made right again.
It would take centuries to develop into Levitical system, and more time before Jesus would come.
But God is always working to bring people back to that relationship Adam and Eve enjoyed in the garden.

No Trespassing

Genesis 3:22–24 ESV
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
No longer is man permitted to be near the tree of life- for if you eat of it, will live forever.
