PRAY | DEPENDENCE ON GOD

WHAT IS THE CHURCH?

The church is the body of Christ

Jesus is the head of the church ()

so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places ()

Jesus loves the church and he died for the church

Jesus nourishes and cherishes the church

Eph. 3:10

The church submits to Jesus And is obedient to his teachings

to love him, to be transformed by him, and to make him known

SPIRITUAL WORK

2 Corinthians 4:1–6 ESV

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

SHARE | DECLARE THE GOSPEL

WORDS ARE NECESSARY

Last week, we talked about the necessity of words.

Our actions are not enough

We cannot be satisfied with personally living our lives to God’s glory while remaining silent. The gospel literally means, “Good news” and we are commanded to proclaim.

Romans 10:14–15 ESV

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

THE MESSAGE

Jesus died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. (1 Cor. 15:3-4)

APPLICATION

How will you share with the people n your list?

Pray for opportunities, not only that their eyes will be opened.

Are they currently going through something that would provide a bridge for you to share part of your story in relationship to Jesus?

No one seeks after God on their own.

When I hear someone asking questions and interested in Jesus then I assume that this is evidence that the Holy Spirit is at work and I am being invited to join him in that work by proclaiming the gospel

This doesn’t mean we must always push the gospel on people. We should always be praying and always be ready when the moment arises.

DISCIPLE | DISCIPLE THE NATIONS

CONNECTION

In the same way that we could not settle for “DEMONSTRATING” the gospel but we must also DECLARE, so it is that we cannot settle for DECLARING but we must also DISCIPLE.

GOAL: DISCIPLESHIP

Matthew 28:18–20 ESV

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

WHAT IS A DISCIPLE

APPLICATION

How will you walk and grow with the people you are praying for if they trust in Jesus?

Often times evangelism and discipleship has been placed on the gathering of the church?

Just invite someone to church

Let the pastor tell them and I’ll sit here silently and pray for them. Where did we ever get this idea in scripture?

You are the best testimony to your family and friends.

The gathered Church is for the believer to be built up, encouraged, equipped, and SENT OUT?

How would you disciple someone?

Would you?

The church family is here to equipped you, not entertain you? In many ways, the American church is really weird. We entertain and produce a show with a silent audience and then instruct people to invite more people to our show.

This is wrong and needs to stop

We are called to “BE THE CHURCH” as we leave & as we gather...

The church family exists to ENCOURAGE, EQUIP, and SEND OUT.

It would be impossible for me to equip everyone here in a personal and relational manner. I can do that through biblical teaching but it requires personal contact to apply it to our everyday lives.

Prayer & Conversation to discern how God is desiring us to specifically focus on “Becoming & Making Disciples”

This purpose and mission doesn’t change - the question becomes - How is God leading us to focus in 2020 as we continue to seek becoming and making disciples.

PURPOSE

This helps focus our various activities into a singular and united direction

We also want this to be something that involves all of us

This isn’t just for the a select few at the church

This is for all of us

This vision will succeed or fail based on all of us.

OUTCOME

Out of the elders retreat we felt led to focus on 4 main goals this year

As I was sharing these with my wife her response was “4 Things! That is too many, I can’t remember all that...

So, we continued to think through how we could focus this year’s vision in a single word.

Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is still echoing in my mind and I was reminded of

We are like little mirrors - BUT what are we reflecting to others (ourselves, culture, or God’s glory)

Not content just going through the religious motions - our hearts can become numb to God and his word

Do you ever feel sluggish when it’s cold outside (it was recently in the 30s.

You just want to wrap up in a blanket and not do anything

Sometimes we can become like this spiritually as well -

Hearts are cold and unmoved by the things of God

We withdraw and curl up in our own insecurities, isolating ourselves from others and even from God

We want hearts that are warmed, comforted, changed by an authentic and real relationship with the living God
