Intro:

Salvation is expressed by the amazing grace of God! We come to know salvation though the greatest act of Grace, God the Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. We know this because in Jesus’ earthly life he showed us first hand what mercy, grace, forgiveness, healing and salvation looks like. We learn things by observation. I know what a Picasso painting looks like because I have seen it and understand the beauty of cubism Pablo Picasso and George Braque used.

Forgiveness + Faith + Salvation

Jesus is enroute to Jerusalem to die for our sins. As he is approaching this epic moment for the salvation of the world he is also teaching his disciples of who he is and for the world to know the amazing grace of God. This seventeenth chapter of Luke opens up with Jesus teaching about forgiveness and faith. Jesus teaches we must be willing to forgive someone seven times a day a person who has done you wrong and ask for forgiveness.
Jesus also teaches about faith and forgiveness...
What do you learn form ?
Luke 17:6 NLT
6 The Lord answered, “If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘May you be uprooted and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you!
Why would this be here in Luke?
These amazing teachings are set before the encounter for our text this morning. Theses teachings serve as the foundation of the truths in the upcoming events. First the teaching on forgiveness tells us that grace and mercy are actors in the act of forgiveness. Jesus commands us to forgive in the face of temptation and sin. This command to forgive is taught by Jesus to his disciples.
Then Luke shows how the apostles seek to increase in their faith that Leads Jesus to teach them about faith.
Luke 17:6 NLT
6 The Lord answered, “If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘May you be uprooted and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you!

Power of Faith

Faith in God is the trust that what is said will be done. This is expressed by the person in faith can say and what is said can be done. We operate by this faith of God’s word. Because God says, things do happen. Lets look at this fait in action in todays text.
Where does power come from in faith?
What happens because of God’s word?
Luke 17:11–14 NLT
11 As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria. 12 As he entered a village there, ten men with leprosy stood at a distance, 13 crying out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 He looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy.
Luke 17:11-14
Lets unpack this text

Salvation for the abandoned.

We worship the God who came for the lost.
10 were stricken with leprosy and expelled because of illness.
They have to live outside and cover their mouth an yell out Unclean! Unclean!.
They here of Jesus coming their way.
They may have heard of Jesus healing.
They have faith that Jesus can do the same for them.
They cry out for healing from Jesus.
Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!
They have faith that Jesus can do what they seek.

Approach Jesus with faith.

They came with trust that Jesus could do what they were seeking. The come to Jesus pleading for mercy. They are looking for Jesus to have compassion toward them and there condition in life.

Jesus looks your way...

Luke 17:14 NLT
14 He looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy.
What a joy to catch the eye of Jesus. What a joy to know that Jesus heard their desperate cry. What a joy that Jesus acknowledged the rejected to look to make them accepted. Jesus acknowledgment is like when a person vouches for you and raises your status an acceptance.
How does it make you feel that Jesus chooses to accept you?
What does it mean that Jesus sees you exactly where you are?

He sees them in there current condition.

How he loves us in the condition we are in.
He responds to their request to change their condition.

Jesus speaks healing

Luke 17:14 NLT
14 He looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy.
Luk
Go show yourselves to the priests.
Imperative command is given to the ten to Go to the Priest.
The command is to “show” themselves to the priest.
The priest will officially cleanse them and clear them to go back to their community as they have steps they have to do to personally re-enter their community.

Healing in Faith and Obedience.

“And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy” ().
Their faith in Jesus command gave them healing. The asked and Jesus answered. They responded to Jesus answer with faithful obedience. Lets look at the sequence of events.
Their faith in Jesus command gave them healing. The asked and Jesus answered. They responded to Jesus answer with faithful obedience. Lets look at the sequence of events.
The are 10 men with leprosy living outside of the community.
They ask for mercy and still have leprosy.
Jesus responds with the command they still have leprosy.
The do as Jesus commands and still have leprosy.
As they are going they realize they were cleansed of their leprosy and no longer have his issue anymore.
Jesus healed them by his word. Their faith and obedience to His word lead to their healing. God is our savior and we worship him. We are what we worship. God is healer and we worship him. We are what we worship. The Son of God gave word for their healing. God has given us word for our healing. We too need to respond to God’s word. This response to God’s word will lead us to praise him and worship him in response.

Praise God for Jesus!

Luke 17:15
Luke 17:15–16 NLT
15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” 16 He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan.
How many were healed? _________
How many came back?____________

What are some reasons to praise God?

The psalmist can assist us in why we praise the Lord.
Psalm 113:1-4
Psalm 113:1–4 NASB95
1 Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord, Praise the name of the Lord. 2 Blessed be the name of the Lord From this time forth and forever. 3 From the rising of the sun to its setting The name of the Lord is to be praised. 4 The Lord is high above all nations; His glory is above the heavens.

Praise God because he is God!

We are to praise the Lord from the rising of the Sun to its setting.
We praise the Lord for he is good!
Psalm 103:1-
Psalm 103:1–5 NLT
1 Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. 2 Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. 3 He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. 4 He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. 5 He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!
Why do you praise him?

One praises God for Jesus!

Luke 17:15–16 NLT
15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” 16 He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan.
Luke 17:
Praise God! I am healed!
Praise God for Jesus and what he has done!

The One is a Samaritan!

The one that comes to give glory is the neglected, rejected and hated people in the community. This is direct contrast that the other 9 were Jews and did not come back to thank Jesus a fellow Jew. But the despised who has now been made clean comes to thank God for making him so.
This one man, this Samaritan had a God experience that moves him to give glory to the one true living God for what he has done in his life. This should be reflected in all the people who worship God! God has done marvelous things in all of his creation life, but all do not respond to his marvelous gifts!
God recognizes those who do!
Luke 17:17
Luke 17:17–19 NLT
17 Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And Jesus said to the man, “Stand up and go. Your faith has healed you.”
God commends us for our response to his grace in our life. God confirms our status with him when we give him glory in the presence when others will chose to not give him glory.
Psalm 107:1–2 NASB95
1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. 2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary
Psalm 107:1–2 NLT
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. 2 Has the Lord redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.
Give thanks onto the Lord! Praise the God of your salvation! You are saved because God has saved you and not yourself.
