INTRO:

Have you ever tried to do something you felt you were supposed to do and it turned out going totally wrong?
I mean it goes worse than you could have thought?
Maybe it was a conversation you were supposed to have
or a job you were sure you would get
or a relationship that you ‘knew’ was right?
This is what we see in the STORY OF MOSES TODAY
BTW — love this about the Christian Religion, it is deeply personal and deeply relatable.
This is the Story that God wrote for Moses.
We continue in our Exodus Series
We continue in our Exodus Series
The Greatest Story ever told
We find out stories within his story.
This is true of Moses today.
We’ll see that he went from “RICHES TO RAGS” in a matter of days.
His entire world was flipped upside down

WHY?

He knew what God was calling him to do.
But HE was not yet READY TO WALK OUT THAT CALLING
He had to first learn to “Wait on God”
He had to first learn to “Wait on God”

PREVIEW PURPOSE

What does it look like for you to “wait on God?”
What work is God trying to do “in you” before he does a work “through you” ?

RECAP: GOD IS WRITING A STORY

GOD IS WRITING A STORY

Genesis — God’s people end up in Egypt
God’s people being fruitful and multiplying
New Pharoah — hates and fears God’s people
Oppression - slavery, killing of male babies
LAST WEEK:

God Sovereignly Redeems

God — Turns Evil —> Good

40 YEARS EGYPTIAN

“One day, when Moses had grown up”
11 One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens
Ok stop.
“at what age was Moses considered grown up?”
We learn from that he was 40 years old
Acts 7:23 ESV
23 “When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
So…40 years have passed from verse 10 to verse 11.
So just let that sink in.
I’m not even 40 yet.
That’s a long time.
Remember that, it’s going to be important.
What was Moses doing those 40 years?
Acts 7:22 ESV
22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
He was…being Egyptian...Prince of Egypt
Ok, what did Moses do after 40 years.
“One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens”
What’s going on here?
Moses has been living in PRIVILEGE and PRESTIGE in Pharaoh’s PALACE all his life.
He was likely educated, given some kind of living stipend and lived in relative luxury.
Acts 7:22 ESV
22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
His PEOPLE (his brothers) the text says were suffering ENSLAVEMENT and ABUSE
“Afflicted with heavy burdens”
“Made to work ruthlessly as slaves”
“their lives were bitter with hard labor”
FOR 40 YEARS!
Let that SINK IN
Q: How many thousands of Hebrew lives were lost while Moses, the Prince of Egypt, supped on lavish meals and long escapades to the wonders of Egypt?
How many thousands of Hebrew lives were lost while Moses, the Prince of Egypt, supped on lavish meals and long escapades to the wonders of Egypt?
Moses was NO HERO
not at this point.
At some point Moses knew that he was not Egyptian but Hebrew
calls the Hebrews “his people” literally “brothers.”
He certainly would have learned about the Plight of the Hebrews at some point in his life.
Moses knew he was a Hebrew from birth.
He certainly would have learned about the Plight of the Hebrews at some point in his life.
He certainly would have learned about the Plight of the Hebrews at some point in his life.
He then would have wrestled, perhaps supressing, the GUILT that was WELLING up inside of him as he looked at their condition and his.
I imagine he tried all sorts of things to BLOCK out this painful truth.
But something just kept GNAWING AT HIM
He came to realize that he had been PUT in this PLACE for a PURPOSE
That he wasn’t just “lucky”
He had to begin wonder, WHY HAS GOD PUT ME HERE?
WHY HAS GOD GIVEN ME SO MUCH?
But that something more was calling him.
He was called to something more.
All he could muster up were the words “deliverer”
God had called him to deliver his people.
And I think he knew it, a kind of internal sense of calling.
He thought his people would see this too:
Acts 7:25 ESV
25 He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.
How many times had he gotten up to look on the plight of his people only to turn back?
Eventually the gnawing feeling became too and it was time.
It took 40 years.
WHY HAS GOD GIVEN ME SO MUCH?
All he could muster up were the words “deliverer”
God had called him to deliver his people.
And I think he knew it, a kind of internal sense of calling.
He knew that it might cost him if he pursued God’s calling.
You say, “How do you know that?”
I don’t, but it’s how I IMAGINE it might have gone
Look at a couple NT Scriptures
And we have some clues from other scriptures.
Take one:
Hebrews 11:24–26 ESV
24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.

GUT CHECK

Now let’s take a moment and do a little self assessment.
In this story are we the Hebrews or are we Moses?
In a global context we are Moses.
Compared to most of the world
Acts 7:25 ESV
25 He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.
We live lives of relative ease and abundance.
There’s nothing wrong with that btw.
Even in our immediate context, most of us being white middle class or above
Who are those around us that suffer injustice?
Racial, economic, systemic?
But it does begin to beg the question.
WHY HAS GOD PUT ME IN THIS PLACE?
WHY HAS GOD BLESSED ME WITH SO MUCH?
What are the needs around me?
These kinds of question will lead us into the Story God has for us.
Into what God may be calling you to.
Evidently Moses had a passion for justice, as we will see.
What do you have a passion for?
Where do you think that came from?
He was NOT READY to be God’s servant yet.
He was NOT READY to be God’s servant yet.
Clearly he already thought that he was called to Deliver them from bondage.
He was NOT READY to be God’s servant yet.
He was NOT READY to be God’s servant yet.
He was NOT READY to lead God’s people yet.
He knew the “what” of his calling
He needed the “when”, “why” and “how” of God’s calling.
He tries to fulfill his calling on his own terms, on his own power, in his own timing.

WHAT HAPPENS? -

What happens? -
Exodus 2:11–12 ESV
11 One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. 12 He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
Exodus 2:11 ESV
11 One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.
He goes out and he sees exactly what you thought you might see:
A Hebrew being beaten by an Egyptian Task Master
Now, let’s try to experience this.
I don’t know if you have seen any of the recent movies on Slavery.
12 Years a Slave is an excellent movie.
In those movies you begin to get a sense of the brutality of American Slavery.
In those movies you begin to get a sense of the brutality of American Slavery.
This is likely what Moses would have observed.
So he thinks “not is my chance” I can right this wrong by taking it into my “own hands” literally.
So he “offs” this guy and burys him in the sand.
A good ol’ fashion mafia style hit.
He saves this Hebrew.
This would be like a slave rising up to kill one of their white masters.
He feels pretty good about himself.
So he goes home.
The next day he comes out again.
Exodus 2:13 ESV
13 When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, “Why do you strike your companion?”
This time Two Hebrews fighting.
Moses, being the deliverer, goes to peace make between them.
Their response catches Moses off guard.
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
Exodus 2:14 ESV
14 He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”
Heb 2:14
“14 He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us?
I read this response with all sorts of SCORN and CONTEMPT
Here is that Moses, who lives in luxury, finally come down to mingle with us commoners.
I mean imagine this.
Let’s look at American Slavery again.
There was what was called a “house slave”
He lived with the Master in the House and enjoyed much better conditions than did the 'field’ slaves.
Sometimes, this House Slave would be in charge of other slaves and would treat them equally badly (at times) to maintain his position and freedom.
The other slaves did not look kindly upon this House Slave
This is probably how they viewed Moses.
What they said changed Moses Life?
It had all gone wrong.
“Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”
“Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”
Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”
This is only one day later
This is only one day later
And if they know, the sooner or later Pharoah knows
And if Pharoah knows...
That’s not good.
Sure enough that’s what happens.
Exodus 2:15 ESV
15 When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.
We don’t know how Pharaoh felt towards Moses but I don’t imagine it was good
His existence was evidence in his own household of disobedience of his command.
Perhaps he was just waiting for an excuse to kill Moses.
Heb
Now he had it.
So Moses FLEES
Probably in a very short amount of time.
He left the Palace that morning with everything, he’s leaving Egypt now with nothing.
Not his stuff, not his family, not his people.
This is a pretty DRAMATIC SHIFT for him.
Some of you experience that in coming to College.
All of a sudden you are out of your home
On your own.
Moses felt his whole life crumbling
And why?
But it cost him everything.
But it cost him everything.
He went from a life of FULLNESS to a FUGITIVE roaming around the Midian Desert of all places.
His head is spinning. He’s exhausted.
so he sits down for a rest, next to a well.

THE TRUTH IS...

He was NOT READY to be God’s servant yet.
He was NOT READY to lead God’s people yet.
Now let’s take a moment and do a little self assessment.
He knew the “what” of his calling
He needed the “when”, “why” and “how” of God’s calling.
In this story are we the Hebrews or are we Moses?
He had to fulfill his calling on his own terms, on his own power, in his own timing.
In a global context we are Moses.
Compared to most of the world
We live lives of relative ease and abundance.
There’s nothing wrong with that btw.
Even in our immediate context, most of us being white middle class or above
Who are those around us that suffer injustice?
GOD had worked to PROTECT & PRESERVE MOSES in PHARAOH’S PALACE
Racial, economic, systemic?
But it does begin to beg the question.
WHY HAS GOD PUT ME IN THIS PLACE?
Moses has come to the end of himself.
GOD was now WORKING TO PREPARE MOSES for HIS CALL
WHY HAS GOD BLESSED ME WITH SO MUCH?

GOD MOVES

These kinds of question will lead us into the Story God has for us.
Into what God may be calling you to.
Evidently Moses had a passion for justice, as we will see.
What do you have a passion for?
Where do you think that came from?
So Moses is sitting there trying to come to grips with all that happens.
When God again, begins to move, through ‘circumstance’

GOD MOVES

So Moses is sitting there trying to come to grips with all that happens.
Then God begins to move, through ‘circumstance’
When all of a sudden...
Exodus 2:16–17 ESV
16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 The shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and saved them, and watered their flock.
Exod 2:
MIDIAN — [picture] - General Region
[picture] - General Region
MIDIAN — [picture] - General Region
Water scarce in the desert so a Well would be a popular place
An important place to come and water your flocks
Which was your livelihood.
These 7 daughters show up, but then these Shepherds do, who are apparently bad news.
Moses just can’t help himself.
He was made to deliver and protect people.
So that exactly what he does.
THIS event was fortuitous.
and to rebuild him into the man he’s called him to be.
B/C this event was fortuitous.
For it leads to Moses not only finding a New Home but a New Family.
What circumstances has God put in your life that he might be working through?
Exodus 2:18–22 ESV
18 When they came home to their father Reuel, he said, “How is it that you have come home so soon today?” 19 They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and even drew water for us and watered the flock.” 20 He said to his daughters, “Then where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.” 21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man, and he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah. 22 She gave birth to a son, and he called his name Gershom, for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.”
Exod 2:
God is PROVIDING FOR MOSES.
Maybe Moses was ready to die… after all what did he know about surviving in the Desert?
But God gives him a new home, and a new family.
The Name for his son “i have been a sojourner in a foreign land” indicate a new chapter in the life of Moses
Now he had begun to understand the plight of his people.
It will be another 40 years until
It will be another 40 years until
So what was God doing for those 40 years in THE MIDIAN DESERT?

LEARNING TO WAIT ON GOD

He was preparing Moses to lead His People.
He was preparing Moses to lead His People.
The closing words of this section indicate that Moses is beginning to understand what life was like for his Hebrew brothers and sisters
“I have been a sojourner in a foreign land”
Moses now begins to understand what hardship is. What life would have been like for his people.
He went from living in Luxury and having it all to being practically
Then God began to work.
Moses had to be stripped of everything so he could be free to do anything God asked Him.
He is learning to wait on God.
I imagine that he is learning to wait on God. God has to do a work on us, to do a work in us, to do a work through us. Moses is not ready to follow God and lead these peopleHe needs training (shepherd), mostly he needs…Humility. Defined as knowing God’s place and know ours. You want to lead God’s people — you have to learn to follow God’s leadingYou want to step into your calling — first you have to learn the callers voicenot just the WHAT, but the WHEN and the WHERE and the HOW.Moses knew his calling, but he had not yet grown into his calling. Maybe this is some of you. You feel so strongly about what God has called you to do. But you are not ready yet. You are not fully dependent on God yet. So the question is not IF but WHENIn the meantime do what God has put in front of you, learn his voice and follow it. My story: very early on I felt called to preach the gospel, but it would take 7 years before I ever got the chance. Why? B/C i needed to be humbledI needed to learn somethingsone of which is you don’t need to be on a stage to preach the gospel. You do it with how you live your lifehow you treat other peopleHow you study the bibleHow you love GodHow you share his love with others. I was trying to live content in the land…God came and got me.
God has to do a work on us, to do a work in us, to do a work through us.

Can you hear HIS VOICE?

Do you know it?It will be imperative for Moses to learn humility. To learn leadershipTo learn the Father’s voiceIt got to the point where moses would speak to God face to face as you would with a friend. Is that your relationship; with God? b/c it can be.
Moses is not ready to follow God and lead these people

THE TRUTH IS...

He was NOT READY to be God’s servant yet.
He was NOT READY to lead God’s people yet.
He knew the “what” of his calling
Exodus 33:11 ESV11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
He needed the “when”, “why” and “how” of God’s calling.
He had to fulfill his calling on his own terms, on his own power, in his own timing.
GOD had worked to PROTECT & PRESERVE MOSES in PHARAOH’S PALACE
GOD was now WORKING TO PREPARE MOSES for HIS CALL
He needs training (shepherd)
Step 1 - come to know him, give your life to him, get baptized todayStep 2 - learn his voice - primarily through the word of GodStep 3 - learn obedience — no matter the costStep 4 - learn dependence on him — no matter the situation
WHAT he needs more than anything is…HUMILITY.
In William J. Bennett’s classic Children’s book “The book of Virtues” there was one he left out:
Humility
2 Corinthians 1:9 ESV9 Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.
It’s A Virtue the World cannot produce.
Defined as knowing God’s place and know ours.
5. Step 5 - Follow Him until the end. 6. Step 6 - Watch him work in and through you. 7. Step 7 - Rejoice.
You want to lead God’s people — you have to learn to follow God’s leading
I imagine that he is learning to wait on God. God has to do a work on us, to do a work in us, to do a work through us. Can you hear HIS VOICE?

You want to step into your calling — first you have to learn the callers voice

not just the WHAT, but the WHEN and the WHERE and the HOW.
Humility is the greatest indicator of one’s maturity in Christ.
Humility
It’s the one Virtue the World cannot produce.
Moses needed to LEARN dependence on God, complete dependence.
Then God could make him the Great Leader.
The Moses of must precede the Moses of .
Numbers 12:3 NIV
3 (Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)
Moses became a very humble man.
Humility
Same in the NT
“Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
1 Peter 5:5 ESV
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
It’s the one Virtue the World cannot produce.
Moses knew his calling, but he had not yet grown into his calling.
He needed to be humbled so God could really use him.
Maybe this is some of you.
You feel so strongly about what God has called you to do.
But you are not ready yet.
You are not fully dependent on God yet.
So the question is not IF but WHEN
In the meantime do what God has put in front of you, learn his voice and follow it.
What work does God need to do in you?
My story: very early on I felt called to preach the gospel, but it would take 7 years before I ever got the chance.
Why?
B/C i needed to be humbled
I needed to learn somethings
one of which is you don’t need to be on a stage to preach the gospel.
You do it with how you live your life
Philippians 2:8–10 ESV
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
how you treat other people
How you study the bible
How you love God
How you share his love with others.
I was trying to live content in the land…God came and got me.
Are you wondering what is taking God so long?
Have you been Humbled?
Can you hear the voice of Jesus?

JESUS CONNECTION

This Jesus.
Jesus, like Moses, left the Treasures of Heaven to be identified with his People.
Jesus was God in the flesh, but did not CLING TO HIS DIVINITY ()
THE PLAN:
Highlight humility and CONNECT IT TO CHRIST.
The NIV Application Commentary: Exodus Contemporary Significance

THIS IS REALLY GOOD
LINGER HERE, REALLY DRAW OUT THIS POINT OF HUMILITY
INGER HERE, REALLY DRAW OUT THIS POINT OF HUMILITY
Philippians 2:6–9 NLT
6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,
CS LEWIS QUOTE ON HUMILITY
Philippians 2:6–10 NLT
6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
Numbers 12:3 ESV
3 Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth.
Jesus to would be sought after to be killed
Jesus to would be driven into the desert to be prepared for his Calling
Jesus too learned obedience through suffering.
Jesus too would deliver his people from the bondage to sin.
The Moses of must precede the Moses of .
The Christ born of lowly circumstances, who was despised and rejected by men, who died with great shame, must precede the Christ of the resurrection.
1 Peter 5:5 ESV
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
We, too, must be broken before we can be built up again, for his sake.
Moses knew his calling, but he had not yet grown into his calling.
Maybe this is some of you.
So you say:
You feel so strongly about what God has called you to do.
But you are not ready yet.
You are not fully dependent on God yet.
So the question is not IF but WHEN
What does this look like?
In the meantime do what God has put in front of you, learn his voice and follow it.
My story: very early on I felt called to preach the gospel, but it would take 7 years before I ever got the chance.
Why?
B/C i needed to be humbled
2 Corinthians 1:9 ESV9 Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.
Step 4 - learn dependence on him — no matter the situation
I needed to learn somethings
one of which is you don’t need to be on a stage to preach the gospel.
You do it with how you live your life
how you treat other people
How you study the bible
How you love God
How you share his love with others.
I was trying to live content in the land…God came and got me.

CAN YOU HEAR HIS VOICE?

How to I progress down the path to maturity?
Do you know it?
Do you know it?
It will be imperative for Moses to learn humility.
To learn leadership
To learn the Father’s voice
It got to the point where moses would speak to God face to face as you would with a friend.
Is that your relationship; with God? b/c it can be.
Exodus 33:11 ESV
11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

7 STEPS TO PURSUE HUMILITY

Step 1 - come to know him, give your life to him, get baptized today
Acts 2:28 ESV
28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’
Acts 2:38 ESV
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Step 2 - learn his voice - primarily through the word of God
The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
John 10:3–5 ESV
3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
Step 2 - learn his voice - primarily through the word of God
John 10:10–15 ESV
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
John 10:1–10 ESV
1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
John 10:3–6 ESV
3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
ESV9 Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.

CAN WE END HERE?
Just as Moses came from prestige and privilege to identify with his people and to lose it all to be scorned by the enemy and by god’s people…so to Jesus left heaven to identify with his people and bear the ultimate scorn and reproach from his enemies and his people.
JESUS CONNECTION:
can we work this in above?

Without question the greatest figure in the OT (mentioned by name 767 times), his influence also extends to the pages of the NT (where he is mentioned 79 times).

NOT NEEDED
How true it is that the Lord will drive us out of our comfort zones in order that we may learn the painful lesson that only he is our comfort.
By being forced to rely on his grace more fully, we are being prepared for service to him (cf. ). In making this spiritual journey, we are not only living out Moses’ experience but Christ’s as well. Is this not what the writer of Hebrews had in mind? “Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered” (). We cannot say that Christ “learned” in the same sense as we do. Nevertheless, there is a tie that binds us to Christ, our brother. We, too, learn obedience from what we suffer.

THIS IS REALLY GOOD
The Moses of must precede the Moses of . The Christ born of lowly circumstances, who was despised and rejected by men, who died with great shame, must precede the Christ of the resurrection. We, too, must be broken before we can be built up again, for his sake.
