Week 1: Unfollow Performance
Mary & Martha’s House
Serving is not a problem and performance isn’t a problem, but forgetting the most important thing is a problem
To Chase after Jesus, we have to make Him the most important thing in our day, our week, our month, our life!
Week 2: Unfollow the something else
Matthew the tax collector left his job to become unemployed and follow Jesus at all costs
Matthew threw Jesus a party and invited his tax collector friends - because a “saved man doesn’t want to go to Heaven alone!
>> this sets us up for our subject tonight...
Tonight’s Message is Titled: SALTY & LIT
Pray

1. You are...

…a Disciple

Disciple: a personal follower of Jesus during His life
you can be a disciple of pretty much anything - now a days we would call it “following”, “liking”, “watch list”
when you look up to OR admire someone, you want to mimic or follow their lifestyle
celebrities
musicians
youth’s pastors (for their jokes)
we call these people Mentors!

…an Evangelist

Evangelist: a person who seeks to convert others to the Christian faith by personal experience or witness

Jesus Calling the First Disciples

Luke 7:22 ESV
22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.
John 1:40–45 ESV
40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). 43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
John 1:40
Andrews went and found his brother, Simon Peter
Philip went and found Nathanael

The Facts Speak For Themselves

Luke 7:22 ESV
22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.
John the Baptist is in prison and doubting whether Jesus was the promised Messiah
Jesus’ response to John’s disciples were simple…go tell John what has been happening

The Great Commission

Mark 16:15–18 ESV
15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Marks of Disciples of Jesus
cast out demons
speak in new tongues
resilient to poison
lay hands on the sick and they will recover

2. How can this be?

You are…Salty & Lit

Matthew 5:14–16 ESV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:13–16 ESV
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
Matt 5:13-16

Salt

salt in Jesus day was a precious commodity:
preserved food
used as payment
adds flavor
spiritual salt in today’s world should
preserve culture and influence - the world shouldn’t be the most influential entity
adding flavor to society - Christians should be the most energetic and excited people
sadly, too many Christians think that being a Christian has to be something boring.
does sound like a boing life? healing sick, casting out demons, speaking in tongues (filled with the Spirit), protected from poison (don’t test the limits)

Light

Earth at night from ISS
Jesus calls himself the light of the World - what an honor and huge responsibility to also be called light in the world (, )
As light we should shine and expose the darkness in the world around us
You are either light or you are not
“a light that is hidden, is not fulfilling its purpose.”
