Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

How do you do that?

Matthew 15:14 ESV
Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

Jesus’ Ministry Begins

This morning we are going to focus in on one verse.
Matthew 4:17 ESV
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
The problem with this translation is

John the Baptist says

Matthew 3:2 ESV
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

A poor translation: you better start feeling morose about your sins because the end is near.

A Better Translation:

Matthew 3:2 ESV
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

[καὶ] λέγων· Μετανοεῖτε· ἤγγικεν γὰρ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.

Nestle

μετανοεω = to repent Imperative 2nd person

Isaiah 40:3 ESV
A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

ηγγικεν = perfect, active

“Is now here” “The door bell has rung and you hear yelling throughout the house “they’re here”

βασιλεία = the noun of the verb βασιλευω “to rule”

οὐρανῶν = sky or heavens

The evidence of the reign of heaven.

Matthew 11:2–5 ESV
Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.
