Intro

So for the last few weeks we have been looking at the book of Jude, and in this short book, what have we discovered?
Tell me what you think about what you have heard as we walked through these passages.
Has what you read encouraged you?
Now lets look at our text for this week, verses 14-16 to begin with this evening.
Jude 14–16 ESV
14 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.
It seem puzzling that Jude would site something that is not considered truly Scripture by any group, it is always considered as extra-biblical in nature. Some of the early church fathers did consider it to be inspired, Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian both did.
Anyway, 1 Enoch 1:9
The New American Commentary: 1, 2 Peter, Jude (1) The Prophecy: Judgment on the Ungodly (14–15)

“Behold, he will arrive with ten million of the holy ones in order to execute judgment upon all. He will destroy the wicked ones and censure all flesh on account of everything that they have done, that which the sinners and wicked ones committed against him

The Lord will judge the wicked.... verse 15 listen to what the passage says
Jude 15 ESV
15 to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
The purpose of the Lord’s coming is explained in this verse. The Lord is coming to judge those who have opposed Him and to convict them of their sin. The ungodly refers to those of course outside the body of Christ.
What Jude is telling us here is that no one will escape judgment, every unbeliever will face the judgment of the Lord. There is a connection here to verse 4.
Jude 4 ESV
4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
These certain ungodly people will be judged and condemned. They lived lives that disregarded the ways and purposes of God. He deserves all praise and worship and they have cheapened the grace of God and the message of His love.
The judgment that this group of unbelievers will face falls back to two very specific points, one is their evil works and the words of their false teaching. They are wicked people.
If I were to ask you today, what would people be condemned for, what would you say?
Now verse 16...
Jude 16 ESV
16 These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.
Jude gives us some description of the issues at hand, of their own sinful desires.
Grumblers are those who grumble and complained against the Lord.
Exodus 16:7–9 ESV
7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against the Lord. For what are we, that you grumble against us?” 8 And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the Lord.” 9 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, ‘Come near before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’ ”
Malcontents - one who is dissatisfied and rebellious...
They chased after their own sinful desires and pursued unrighteousness. The desire here is the desire of the flesh
Load mouthed boasting - The blasphemy against God.
Favoritism - shown for the sake for personal gain.
What we see is the verse is the truth that man can bring about all types of evil, and this evil that is at the every intent of their hearts will be judged for they have lived apart form the Lord.
Now the last section verses 17-25 we find final exhortations to the believers.
Jude 17 ESV
17 But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Verse 17 is the call to remember the words of the apostles, they warned of what would happen in the last days
Jude 18 ESV
18 They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.”
Toward the end of time, there would be scoffers, These apostles gave them that message as well. The last days would refer to the time close to the Lord’s coming.
And the last times, are thought to be here. especialy when you reference, ;
Acts 2:17 ESV
17 “ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;
The idea of the spirit of God being poured out we would connect to the coming of the Lord’s Holy Spirit in the world. So the last days have been here for a while, perhaps the beginning of it.
Scoffers are those who do not believe and follow after their own lusts. Do we see that today? Yes we do, we see people who refuse to believe, they say there is no God and we have those who chase after their own passions.
Verse 19
Jude 19 ESV
19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.
These non believers are said to cause problems, they divide what is right and good. These again are what the apostles prophesied would come and hurt the church. They are wordly lost people
These trouble makers are marked by a unregenerate life… devoid of the Spirit
Now verse 20-21
Jude 20 ESV
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
Jude 20–21 ESV
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.
The exhortation to believers continues with a little change in emphasis. those true members of the faith must not only resist these false teachers and thier ways, nut they must continue to grow in their Christian faith and keep themselves in the love of God.
Look at the emphasis of what he says… Build yourself up, pray, keep and wait patiently. Each of these verbs are to be understood as instrumental in their walk and faith for the Lord Jesus Christ.
So build yourself up in the faith,
Pray in the Spirit
Keep yourself in God’s Love and
Wait eagerly but patiently for His return.
Verses 22-23
Jude 22–23 ESV
22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.
There is a distinction here, 1 between those who need faith and with those who must be snatched out of the fire.
Those who doubt are those who these false teachers have helped to lead astray. Have mercy on them and with patience help them. Its easy to dismiss these people, but how can we then the work of Satan has been at play to hurt them.
work until the end, you might be snatching people out of the fire…reclaim them, this is a way to show them mercy.
To save then from the fire refer to eternal judgment. If we do not work, they will be consumed.
Verses 24-25 serve as a doxology of sorts...
Jude 24–25 ESV
24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, 25 to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

The doxology reminds the readers of the heart and soul of the Christian life. All glory and majesty and power belong to God. He will be praised forever and ever by believers in Jesus Christ

In particular, Jude reminded his readers that God is able and willing to keep them from succumbing to apostasy. The false teachers threatened, but those who truly belong to the Lord will not capitulate. They will continue to be faithful until the end. Their faithfulness until the end, however, is not due to their own nobility or inner strength. It is God himself who keeps his own from falling away. He grants the ability to stand before God blameless and joyful on the last day.

Jude 1–24 ESV
1 Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: 2 May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. 3 Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. 5 Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. 8 Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones. 9 But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” 10 But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. 11 Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion. 12 These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever. 17 But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. 24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy,
