Tips for turmoil
Last week We learned about how saul did not obey God and he rejected the lord so in turn The Lord rejected him from being King over Israel and he said he would give it to his neighbor that was better than he was.
Samuel is old at this time and his sons are not going to be judges he was the last Judge of Israel. Now the nation is without a king approved by God they are without a divinely approved leader.
The man God has rejected is still on the throne and would be for another 20 years
So what was Samuel to do?
The situation was hopeless a king on the throne that was driven by ego that was presumptuous that had no respect for God or his laws. That refused to carry out the Lord's orders.
And worse than that Samuel is the one that anointed him it was at the Lord's command but no one knew that.
No matter how you look at the situation it was bad.
You ever been there?
Were no matter where you look you can't see a way forward ?
Nothing you can think about gives you hope
It just seems like things are getting progressively worse and there is nothing you can do about it. You are just watching everything you love burn to the ground?
And worse yet it seems like you had something to do or did have something to do with creating the situation you are in?
I have been there. And if you are not there you will be there just give it time
I have visited that place but thankfully I did not buy a house there and I do not want to go back but I will life will bring me there either by my own doing or by situations that are out of my control.
Sometimes we come to church and we think everyone has it together and no one is going through what we are. And no one is going through exactly the same things but we all experience the same emotions.
But we do not all go through it at once
Pastor fisher told me this it is like the cylinders in an engine
When I am down Pastor Ashton is up
When I am down my wife is when my wife is down I am up And we bear one another's burden.
Who to him that is alone when he falleth.
Listen we all go through these times
I call it being in the spin cycle. I have been there more times than I can count
I was there recently
So what do we do when we are there
Well here is what helped me get out of the spin cycle recently
Maybe it will help you.
So what are you do when you're there?

Consider the time devoted to the past

16:1 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
Why did God ask that question ?
God does not need information from man he asks question for different reasons than we do
He asks us questions to lead us to the truth
So you know why he is asking Samuel that
He wants him to consider how much time he is going to devote to the past
How much time are you going to devote to morning for saul
And he is not telling him it is wrong to morn he gave us those emotions but he is telling him that we still need to direct those emotions and not be overcome by them
Not to be paralized by them
And if Samuel gods man the judge of Israel was susceptible to it don't you know that we are as well
The bible was not written about super heros it was written about men and women of like passions as we are
People that faced the same dilemmas we face every day
We have the tendency as humans to live in the past to think alot about
So God would ask us the same question
I think it is interesting that so many people that have social media spend a lot of time checking up on people from the past that are no longer part of our lives
People that God has rejected because they have rejected god
We look at the disasters
Rubbernecking like when you pass and accident you spend more time looking at the wreck than the road ahead
And I wonder If God was saying samuele keep going there is nothing to see here keep your eys on the road ahead
Have you considered if it is healthy for you to keep checking up on your old flame ?
To keep watching the people that have Hurt you
The people that have rent your garments
The people that have rejected the truth you were trying to give them.
Samuel was spending too much time wishing things could have been different
We do that
If Saul would have just listened but he did not
Saul did not realize how much potential he had
He had such an opportunity
He was raised in Israel had good parents
We can do that with our siblings
With our children
You can anoint them instruct them but at the end of the day we can raise children but we cannot raise christians they are born our children and they have to be born again to be God's children
They will have to choose that is how God wants it to be.
We can't force it.
How much time are we going to devote to what God is done with
With what could have been different
What god has rejected cut off and removed and pruned out of our lives
What he has taken away.
When you are in turmoil how much time do you devote to this?
The principle is this it is not spiritual to mourn for saul it does not do any good
Feeling bad is not spiritual and it accomplishes no eternal purpose. It is not wrong but it dose not make you a better person
People will keep themselves in a place of grief and mourning because they think it is wrong to move on to feel ok they feel bad by feeling good and how can I feel good when saul has rejected this?
Godly sorrow leads to repentance but sorrow for the sake of sorrow is not good is your sorrow leading you to a place of repentance to do better or is it just for sorrow?
Samuel could take comfort in the fact that God told him to anoint saul and god told him to reject him as well
He was driving Samuel was just along for the ride.

Prepare for the future

16:1 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
The horn is what God made he anointed samuel with a vial what man made the first kings was mans desire and he had him anointed with something man-made the second was god's desire and he was anointed with something God
The first man was earthly Adam the second man was the Lord from heaven Christ and that's the pattern here
The ram was caught by the Horn in the thicket
And they put horns on the altar
It is the power of God the provision of God the promises from God
It is the anointing of the Lord
That oil is a type of the holy spirit.
The new testament verse is this
Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
How do you do that
19Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Furthermore
- And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
You know instead of crying about what you can't change you prepare for what god is doing in your life
He spent all his oil on saul
Saul was an oil vampire we call them energy vampires
You ever deal with people like that when you are done your spent
And we have a tendency to nurse our wounds
When we should be getting ahold of God and ready for what is next
He wants us to be filled with the spirit
He wants us to get ready for what is next
He wants us to know that he has already provided a king
He already has the answer for our problem
He has already taken all of it into consideration nothing takes him by surprise and this did not either
If you are ever in turmoil prepare for the future
You want to have oil in your horn when you meet david
We always have the holy spirit if we are saved but being filled with it is when you let him have all of you you let him be the driver
You stir it up.
You prepare for the future king
God revealed to Samuel he was not ready for david and he needed to prepare
Here is a real life illustration of that my first wife passed away and I was in grief and mourning and I thought I do not know if God has a wife for me in the future I do not know if he has a mother for the kids in the future but if he does I need to fill my horn with iol and be ready.
So we started praying together that If god would bring someone we would be ready and be a blessing to that person.
I started going to the gym and eating right I stopped as soon as I met her and running it helped my emotions and helped me be ready with my horn of oil for when he did provide
Let me ask you are you ready for what God has for your future?
God has already provided will you accept that ? And prepare for that?

Depend on Divine Guidance

16:2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
IF you do not know how to move forward ask God
Acknowledge your obstacles
Tell him about what is in your way
Identify your fear and tell him about it
This is treason if I do this the sitting king will kill me
I do not see how you want me to do this
Tell him what your fears are and he will guide you forward
He will make a way when there is no way
He told him to leave some information out not let saul know exactly what is going on
God does this many times in the bible
The midwives lied to pharaoh instead of killing the kids and God used that
There is a time for civil disobedience obey God rather than man.
Do not go announce to the government you are going to anoint the next king.
Do not tell the enemy of God all you know do not cast your pearls before swine.
Not an excuse to do what you want to do
He will tell you what to do.
Look at what he tells him the way forward is
16:2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
That heifer was the sacrifice of the Lord's provision.
The life and the blood came from God
And we are to take our sacrifice with us we are to God with God
If God before us who can be against us
Take the Lord forward with you get close to jesus and when it is scary.
If you have the Lord with you what do you have to fear
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Get spiritual
Those people in your life like saul will not interfere and want to be around you when you are doing spiritual things
When you go forward with God than that takes care of a lot of the people problems you have
They cant hang they can't keep up it is not what they want to do.
When you pray they get uncomfortable they do not want to go with you to church
You just go forward for God and they will not be able to get you there.
When I am fearful of carnal people I get spiritual in other words I draw near to God and that puts distance between me and those that I fear are trying to mess up my life they do not want any part of it.
God will take you to a place they can't go.
Moses red Sea
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
You do not have to have all the information now just go ahead with what you know the rest in will show you in the pathway of obedience.
The answer for your trouble is down at the sacrifice among God's people in his presence
If you are waiting for a perfect picture of the next king to get moving you will never find him
Depend on his guidance and get moving.
You just need to know the direction not the details
he will give you the details later .
I actually like operating this way.
When we're going on a trip I just want to go. My wife always wonders how much to pack. I'm like let's just go we'll pack along the way
It is with jesus it is for a sacrifice it involves a greater purpose
It is with the people of God
It is listening to him as you go.
a lot of people never go because they can't see around the corner
I tell people looking for a wife. If god has a wife for you is she alive now?
What do you need to do to be a good husband provide, pray, be the right person go do that build your nest
Prepare your wok in the field afterward build thy house.
Start praying for them they are alive you just have not found them.
You get that ready they will show up.
Are you depending on your guidance or God's guidance?
For all these problems you're facing whose wisdom are you depending on to get it all figured out? If you're depending on your own you'll stay in the spin cycle
in all thy ways acknowledge him and He will direct thy path

Let go of your Expectations

6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
Do not go by your own wisdom as to what the answer is
Surely the Lord's anointed is before him
What to hear from God do not get ahead of God.
Do not run it like it is your kingdom
He knows what the answer is you do not
He had an expectation of what the answer would look like
A progenitor a first born how man works but not God
Issac jacob judah david
Tall has the face of a leader
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart
He refused him because he had a bad heart
His answer has the right heart.
God sees what we cannot see that is why we need to let go of our expectations
Just know the answer is not what you think it is
How do you think God will come through and answer your problem? Your are wrong . That's the greatest comfort I can give you. What God has for you is better than what you think it is
It is not the first thing you see
.8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.
13 And Jesse begat his firstborn Eliab, and Abinadab the second, and Shimma the third,
14 Nethaneel the fourth, Raddai the fifth,15 Ozem the sixth, David the seventh:
It is not always one of the options in front of you
God first shows you what it is not before he shows you what it is because you appreciate it more.
It is what you don't expect
11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to.
It will be confirmed by God
And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
It will be anointed and you can share your oil with it
It will be evident to man
Even come from bethlehem
And it will be beautiful
I do not feel very comfortable calling a man beautiful. But I do feel comfortable saying that the will of God will be beautiful in your life
Let go of your expectations
The answer is better than you think it is.

Watch the past prepare the future

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
After you did what he told you to do go home and just watch
14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
Saul was the past
God was done with him and the spirit of the Lord departed from him
Now he is left to the winds of his evil stormy foul moods. Because the Lords spirit is not in control so this evil spirit takes over
I am not discounting that the devil has to do the Lords bidding
But in the old testament evil means bad a lot of times evil beast devoured my son not meaning the beast was sinful
And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
Spirit can mean your emotions
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
So what is the answer to this dilemma so it does not get worse ?
Because even though he is called to be king and anointed to be king he is not ready to be king and saul will not give up the throne
He has a servant that says you need to listen to some easy listening music to calm down.
So he said I just happen to know the man
I saw him playing the harp his name is David. Now David has just been anointed king and now he's being called by saul how scary is that?
No wonder his dad sent all these gifts. It's scary when your past comes up in the present isn't it?
But you know what God was doing?
And david is there to learn to prepare
And Saul the past becomes the preparation for the future
And until it is his time he is there and things do not get as bad as they could be because he is there.
Listen to our ultimate answer is for the Lord to return
And when he does we will reign with him when he sits on the throne of david
But untill than we keep things from ketting worse
Bible says we are the salt of the earth salt is not ati septic but it is aseptic
It retards decay it preservs things
That is what david did
And that prepared him for the throne
You will find in your life
The things you have been through in the past prepare you for the future
Yes they were bad saul was bad but it sure made us appreciate david more
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Went to bible school used to watch the old preacher man do chalk talks
Sometimes he would make a mistake but he would just keep on paining
They say the mark of a good artist is not that he does not make mistakes but that he paints them into the picture and you stand back and say what a beautiful paining and never know here had been a mistake
God makes no mistakes but we do but if we will allow him to keep painting he will paint them into the picture and if someone were to stand back and look at our lives after a while they would say it is just so beautiful what God does.
That helps me when I am in the spin cycle even if this is my mistake he can still use it if I yield to him.
Will you allow god to use the ugly past to shape and prepare for the future ?
What do you do when you're down? What do you do when you feel like you're in the spin cycle?
What do you do when things didn't work out like you thought they would?
You consider how much time you devote to the past
You prepare for the future
You depend on Divine guidance
You let go of your expectations
You allow the past to shape the future.
Let's pray
