Poor in Spirit
Poor in Spirit
(NRSV)
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
In the movie clip shown previously, Harrison Ford (Indy)and others are in search of the Holy Grail. One might say, the secret to life. After winning in a sword battle with the soldier placed to protect the Holy Grail from looters, Indy witnesses as another in search of eternal life makes a choice. The guard tells the couple to choose wisely.
How did the choice work for the couple and what was the outcome?
(NRSV)
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. What does this passage say about eternal life?
Evangelical Commentary on the Bible B. Jesus’ Teaching on Discipleship (5:1–7:29)
Poverty of spirit (v. 3) has causes besides disease and poverty (vv. 4–10). It is chiefly an awareness of sin that makes such people wretched, which in turn drives them to God (NEB How blest are those who know their need of God) and rids them of pretense
So ask yourself, how do we choose wisely? The movie clip, if it does nothing else, should teach us the importance of making wise choices based on scripture. Why did Indy choose wisely? well it is a movie and the star always has a happy ending. But beyond Indy being the star performer, his choice was based on who God is, and what God represents rather than greatness. Notice that the woman chose because her eyes want God to be about royalty or greatness in stature but remember, (NRSV)
28 just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
