Rest - Requires more discipline than ever. Technology keeps us from resting, as we rarely disconnect from the internet. Entertainment is at our fingertips. God instituted the discipline of rest in the creation of the world, so God instituted Sabbath which is a dedicated set aside time of rest.

Exods
Exodus 20:3–17 NIV
3 “You shall have no other gods before me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
10 Commandments in Scripture. Majority overlap, but there’s 2 distinctions as it relates to the Sabbath Commandment.
.
In the Israelites are commanded to remember the Sabbath. Israelites to remember what God did for them at the Red Sea.
Exodus 20:8–11 NIV
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Genesis 2:3 NIV
3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
.
In the new generation is commanded to observe the Sabbath.
Deut 5:12
Deuteronomy 5:12–15 NIV
12 “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.
Remember God as the model
The Sabbath is still a very important commandment to us today. It is still crucial that we recognize the order in which God did things in creation; that He rested on the seventh day after doing six days of work. While this was not necessary because He is God, God deliberately gave us a model of how we are to live our lives
Remember what God has done for us
While the Israelites were reminded by Moses in Deuteronomy to remember how God freed their ancestors from Egypt, we have a lot more we are able to celebrate and remember because we have access to God’s Word. Additionally, it is important we remember what God has done in our own lives. One of the benefits of resting is the ability to reflect on how great God has been throughout our generations.
Jesus and Sabbath
We are to be Christ-like. How did Jesus treat the Sabbath?
Jesus observed it:
Luke 4:16 NIV
16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,
Jesus taught about it
After the Pharisees question why the disciples were plucking heads of grain; Jesus taught that the Sabbath isn’t supposed to be legalistic. We’re not to be burdened by Sabbath as a rule, but be blessed by it.
Matthew 11:28–30 NIV
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Mark 2:27–28 NIV
27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Matthew 11:2
Directly after this; Jesus talks about
Mark 2:27-28
Matthew 12:1–14 NIV
1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.” 3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” 9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” 11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.

Rest. In the midst of all the stuff we have going on, it’s good to take one day out of the week to recharge. If not a day, part of the day. Think broadly about it. Think about what you need to rest from (social media, phone, video games)
Reconnect. Whether it’s reading your Bible, praying, listening to worship music, or all of the above, take the time to reconnect with God after a busy week.
Relate. Get rid of all the distractions and relate to the people around you. Spend that time growing in your relationships with other people.
Rejoice. The Sabbath is a great time to take a step back and thank God for all of his blessings. All this talk about the Sabbath is great, but it doesn’t really count unless you are working hard. Remember to honor God with the way you work and rest! Discover joy and relaxation
