So today will be concluding our journey in 1 John. Some important things to remember are that John is writing to combat the Gnostic heresy, to give assurance to believers and warning to those not in Christ, and that John was near death as he was writing this epistle.
19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
So let’s pick this apart and see what we can can learn. First John begins in v19 with “we know”. The word here is that for perceptive knowledge, eidō. In terms of biblical usage the word is used to:

We know what? The we are of or out of God. Consider the fact that we are here at 6 am of our own free will.!
So, yes we are born again believers but the most of the world is not.
The Greek say in the second half, “the whole world in the wicked one lies.”
Our translations say and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one, or under the power of the wicked one.
The word for the whole world, ὁ κόσμος ὅλος - kosmos holos. Holos means: all, whole, completely
The word “lies” is interesting as well - keimai. it is used as:
to lie
of an infant
of one buried
of things that quietly cover some spot
of a city situated on a hill
of things put or set in any place, in ref. to which we often use "to stand"
of vessels, of a throne, of the site of a city, of grain and other things laid up together, of a foundation
metaph.
to be (by God's intent) set, i.e. destined, appointed
of laws, to be made, laid down
lies in the power of the evil one, i.e. is held in subjection by the devil
In this word picture you can see the whole world in the lap of the devil. John is saying this is what we know.
So whose world is this?
Remember in the temptation Satan asked Jesus in
5 Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him[fn] all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

V20 John tells us more things we know,
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
1. the Son of God “is “ come. It is in the PAI and could be said that He is continuously with us or where ever He is needed. 2. He has given us an understanding. Understanding is dianoia. meaning:
the mind as a faculty of understanding, feeling, desiring
understanding
mind, i.e. spirit, way of thinking and feeling
thoughts, either good or bad
John ends the verse with “true”. alēthinos means:
that which has not only the name and resemblance, but the real nature corresponding to the name, in every respect corresponding to the idea signified by the name, real, true genuine
We are in Him who is True its not what we hope is true, or a made up version, He is true. The true God and eternal life. The Greek is zōē aiōnios,
without beginning and end, that which always has been and always will be
without beginning
without end, never to cease, everlasting
Jesus is both man and the true God and eternal life. He is the God Man!
V21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
Keep here means to guard yourself. He means stay in the True and guard yourselves from the false.
