Israel’s Unbelief

Romans 10:1–4 NIV
1 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4 Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
Question: V2. What is their zeal based on? What knowledge is Paul talking about?

Their zeal is not in line with the truth means that the Jews’ passion for God was strong, but it ignored the true righteousness of God (v. 3; cf. also 3:21).

The New American Commentary: Romans 2. The Cause of Israel’s Rejection (9:30–10:21)

Their lack of knowledge was self-inflicted. Refuse the truth and God will give you up to your own foolishness.44

Romans 10:5–13 NIV
5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.” 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
The New American Commentary: Romans 2. The Cause of Israel’s Rejection (9:30–10:21)

The only thing God requires of people is that they not persist in trying to earn what they can only receive as a totally free gift. Their problem is that pride stands in the way of receiving God’s gift. Deeply ingrained in people’s hostility to divine grace is a proud and stubborn self-reliance that would rather suffer loss than be deprived of an occasion for boasting.

rom 10.
Joel 2:32 NIV
32 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.
Isaiah 28:16 NIV
16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.
Romans 10:5–14 NIV
11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
V.11 -
Isaiah 28:16 NIV
16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.
Question: V.5 Can you live by the Law? Successfully?
Question: V.5 Can you live by the Law? Successfully?
Question: V.6-7 Is following the following the true obligation to God like going to heaven? Or is it easier than that?
Deuteronomy 30:12–13 NIV
12 It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”
Deut 30
Question: V.9-10 Is there a magic formula here that we are missing?
The New American Commentary: Romans 2. The Cause of Israel’s Rejection (9:30–10:21)

Those who come to Christ by faith are acknowledging that they have placed themselves entirely and without reserve under his authority to carry out without hesitation whatever he may choose for them to do. There is no such thing as salvation apart from lordship.

The New American Commentary: Romans 2. The Cause of Israel’s Rejection (9:30–10:21)

Outward confession stems from a profound inward conviction. Those who come to Christ must believe in their hearts that Jesus was raised from the dead by God the Father. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the very center of the Christian faith. Apart from the resurrection Christianity would be little more than a well-intentioned ethical system.

Romans 10:14–15 NIV
14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
Question: V.14-15 Is it vital that everyone have an opportunity to hear? What if they don’t hear? Who responsibility is it to talk about God? Why don’t we? (You may say it is the Pastor’s job)
Question: V.14-15 Is it vital that everyone have an opportunity to hear? What if they don’t hear? Who responsibility is it to talk about God? Why don’t we? (You may say it is the Pastor’s job)
Romans 10:16–21 NIV
16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. 18 But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” 19 Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, “I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.” 20 And Isaiah boldly says, “I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.” 21 But concerning Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”
Question: V.16 Is it possible that they have not heard the Gospel. Are they without excuse?
The New American Commentary: Romans 2. The Cause of Israel’s Rejection (9:30–10:21)

All effective preaching is accomplished by God himself. The messenger is at best merely the instrument used by the Holy Spirit as a necessary part of the process. It is God’s own voice that confronts the sinner and offers reconciliation. This existential reality is what constitutes the gospel, “the power of God for … salvation” (Rom 1:16).

Question: V.18 Did they, the Jews have opportunity to hear…of course they did?
Psalm 19:1 NIV
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Colossians 1:23 NIV
23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
Question: V.19 Maybe they did hear the message but did NOT understand it?
The New American Commentary: Romans 2. The Cause of Israel’s Rejection (9:30–10:21)

The answer implied in v. 19 is that if unenlightened people outside of the covenant could understand the gospel, then certainly a religiously gifted and highly favored group like the Jews had no grounds for claiming that it was beyond their understanding.

Question: V.20-21. Is it possible to “resist” the Gospel even after hearing and understanding (head, heart, historical). What would it be called” (willful disobedience)
