1 Corinthians 12:4–11 NASB95
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

I. Gifts of Revelation - the mind gifts

1. Words of wisdom

This can be seen as a gift from God given supernatural wisdom, revelation, and spiritual insight to a person.
I love the word “insight.”
Insight into the divine, divine will and purposes, showing how to solve problems or what lesson could be learn from an experience.
Here’s an example of a work of wisdom that comes in a warning.
Matthew 2:20 NASB95
20 “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.”
Words of wisdom in the form of advice
Luke 22:10–12 NASB95
10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters. 11 “And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 “And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.”
luke 22
I heard a preacher say once say, “it’s better to learn from wisdom than from experience.”

Wisdom is a capacity of the mind; in the OT it involves both knowledge and the ability to direct the mind toward a full understanding of human life and toward its moral fulfillment. Wisdom is thus a special capacity, necessary for full human living, but one which can be acquired through education and the application of the mind.

2. Words of knowledge

2. Words of knowledge

Or what are termed “mysteries.”
This is a relation into a truth that man could not have known himself.
One who would have a word of knowledge would be able to peak into the spiritual and seen the cause behind the matter.. (the manifestation is a result of pain)
2. Words of knowledge
The what behind the why..
2. Words of knowledge
Acts 9:11–12 NASB95
11 And the Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight.”
or what are termed mysteries. This is a relation into a truth that man could not have known himself. One who would have a word of knowledge would be able to peak into the spiritual and seen the cause behind the matter.. (the manifestation is a result of pain)
Not only is Paul bind there is a reason that he is blind and here is the solution.
Acts 5:1–6 NASB95
1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife’s full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land? 4 “While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” 5 And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it. 6 The young men got up and covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.
acts 5:1-
Now thats a word of knowledge right there.
The what behind the why..

3. Discerning of Spirits

The ability to distinguish between the holy spirit and demonic influence.
We need this because the devil can and will come hiding as an angle of light.
That with John says to test every spirit because some will come as sheep in wolf clothes.
1 John 4:1 NASB95
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 John 1:4 NASB95
4 These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.
A gift by which the person so privileged could discern a false miracle from a true one; or a pretender to inspiration from him who was made really partaker of the Holy Ghost.
1 Timothy 4:1 NASB95
1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,
1 Timothy 4:1–4 NASB95
1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, 3 men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude;
Notice what Jesus was able to do
Matthew 9:4 NASB95
4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?
I say this all the time. in the last days the greatest tool of the enemy will be deception.
A gift by which the person so privileged could discern a false miracle from a true one; or a pretender to inspiration from him who was made really partaker of the Holy Ghost. It probably extended also to the discernment of false professors from true ones, as appears in Peter in the case of Ananias and his wife.
Luke 13:16 NASB95
16 “And this woman, a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?”
luke 13:
Now, lets talk about the inspiration gifts

II. Gifts of Inspiration - Vocal Gifts

1 . Prophecy

1 Corinthians 12:10 NASB95
10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
Romans 12:6 NASB95
6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;
rom 12
One commentators says this. “The word prophecy here as used by Paul in 1corinthians refers generally to speech that reports something that God spontaneously brings to mind or reveals to the speaker but which is spoken in merely human words.”
One commentators says this. The word prophecy here as used by Paul in 1corinthians refers generally to speech that reports something that God spontaneously brings to mind or reveals to the speaker but which is spoken in merely human words. That’s why ever sermon has to have some sort of prophecy. To prophesy means to declare or to preach. I would also say that this prophecy is a gift involving speaking the word of the Lord. This does not always point to future. Prophescy is also used by the evangelist to disclose the secrets of the heart of the unbeliever as a sign and a wonder to lead their heart to worship God. Let me add this look at But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. Woop there it is. Prophecy is to build up not tear down.
To prophesy means to declare or to preach.
I would also say that this prophecy is a gift involving speaking the word of the Lord.
Remember, prophecy is the communicating of the mind of God to the mind of man.
Acts 3:21 NASB95
21 whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time.
acts
Remember, Prophecy is the communicating of the mind of God to the mind of man.
we learned this in
Romans 12:6 NASB95
6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;
This cannot be done without faith.
The idea here is not prediction alone, but declaring truth.
why according to the proportion of his faith?
Because sometimes its a warning, exhortation, instruction, or judgement.
That is, prophesying—communicating God’s message, to strengthen, encourage, and comfort
This does not always point to future.
Prophecy is also used by the evangelist to disclose the secrets of the heart of the unbeliever as a sign and a wonder to lead their heart to worship God.
Let me add this look at
1 Corinthians 14:3 NASB95
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. Woop there it is. Prophecy is to build up not tear down.
Whoop there it is.
Prophecy is to build up not tear down.
2 peter
2 Peter 1:21 NASB95
21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

2. Diver (Different kids of) Tongues

It probably extended also to the discernment of false professors from true ones, as appears in Peter in the case of Ananias and his wife.
I know faith is the next one and I’m going out of order but so we can understand it, i’m grouping Discerning of spirit with the gift of Revelation.
Now this one for some reason is the most controversial of them all.
Tongues is to speech in a language the speaker does not know.
Paul says though I speak in tongues of men or tongues of angle speaking of 2 types of tongues. On the day of Pentecost every man could understand in their own langue. Now the tongues we see when peter in is Cornelius’s house and Paul on his way to Ephesus when he laid hand on John’s disciples are different yet still the gift of tongues.
1 Corinthians 13:1 NASB95
1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
Paul says though I speak in tongues of men or tongues, men and of angles.
He speaking of 2 types of tongues.
He speaking of 2 types of tongues.
On the day of Pentecost every man could understand in their own langue.
Acts 2:4–8 NASB95
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. 5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 “And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?
Now the tongues we see when peter in is Cornelius’s house and Paul on his way to Ephesus when he laid hand on John’s disciples are different yet still the gift of tongues.
Acts 10:44–46 NASB95
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,
Now the tongues we see when peter in is Cornelius’s house and Paul on his way to Ephesus when he laid hand on John’s disciples are different yet still the gift of tongues.
WHy
Romans 8:26 NASB95
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;
Jude 22 NASB95
22 And have mercy on some, who are doubting;
Jude 20 NASB95
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,
This leads us into our next one.

3. Interpretation of Tongues

1 Corinthians 14:12–14 NASB95
12 So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church. 13 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
1 cor 14:13-1
Remember spiritual gifts are to edify.
So it was necessary that while one was speaking the deep things of God in a company where several were present who did not understand, though the majority did, there should be a person who could immediately interpret what was said to that part of the congregation that did not understand the language.
1 Corinthians 12:10 NASB95
10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:5 NASB95
5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
This power to interpret was also an immediate gift of God’s Spirit, and is classed here among the miracles.

3. faith
I know if our of order but so we can understand it, i’m calling it a gift of Revelation.
This is not the faith that all christian have in Christ
This is speaking of a special endowment of faith for accomplishing some task.
1Corinthaians 13 says faith to move mountain.
dr daniel whitby says, “that came upon the apostles when any difficult matter was to be performed, which inwardly assured them that God’s power would assist them in the performance of it.” Derrick Marshall says “this gift of faith is one that is transferred to other believers.”
4. Gift of Healing
This gift is release the power of Christ and the kingdom of God, to cure diseases and to break the curse and the yoke of infirmities. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.
5. Working of Miracles
The ability to work various kinds of miracle including and not limited to healing. Powers by which they were enabled at particular times to work miraculously on others; ejecting demons, inflicting punishments or judgments. Also can be called sign and wonders.
One commentators says this. The word prophecy here as used by Paul in 1corinthians refers generally to speech that reports something that God spontaneously brings to mind or reveals to the speaker but which is spoken in merely human words. 7. Discerning of Spirits
The ablity to distinguish between the holy spirit and demonic influence. We need this because the devil can and will come hiding as an angle of light. That with John says to test every spirit because some will come as sheep in wolf close. A gift by which the person so privileged could discern a false miracle from a true one; or a pretender to inspiration from him who was made really partaker of the Holy Ghost. It probably extended also to the discernment of false professors from true ones, as appears in Peter in the case of Ananias and his wife.
Now this one for some reason is the most controversial of them all. And I will teach a whole message on this in a coupe week but for now ill say. It is a speech in a language the speaker does not know and that sometime is in a human langue that the speaker does not know such as Spanish ect.
9. interpretation of Tongues
It was necessary that while one was speaking the deep things of God in a company where several were present who did not understand, though the majority did, there should be a person who could immediately interpret what was said to that part of the congregation that did not understand the language. This power to interpret was also an immediate gift of God’s Spirit, and is classed here among the miracles.
Now next time I want to deal with verse 27-31 and the 5 fold ministry while trying in . Where does love fit into all of this.
