We talked about the Pastors Money
We looked at Paul’s Global vision and how it impacted the Corinthian Church

THIS WEEK

Paul is going to remind the Corinthian Church about some common mistakes in the faith.
What I want us to think about today is this:
When we sin
Have we ever contemplated the process, fruit, and consequences of our decisions?
What goes through our minds?
Is it the pleasure?
Is it the selfish satisfaction?
Is it ever the consequences?
Biggest question is:
What have we learned from the past mistakes we have ever made?
READ
1 Corinthians 10:1–11 NKJV
1 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread. 18 Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19 What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? 20 Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He? 23 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. 24 Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being. 25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake; 26 for “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.” 27 If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake. 28 But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake; for “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.” 29 “Conscience,” I say, not your own, but that of the other. For why is my liberty judged by another man’s conscience? 30 But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for the food over which I give thanks? 31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, 33 just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

1 COr 10:1-
PAUL IS CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION FROM LAST WEEK
ENCOURAGING THE CHRISTIAN TO WELCOME THE CHANGE THE HOLY SPIRIT IS TRYING TO CULTIVATE IN THE LIVES OF BELIEVERS
PAUL SAYS: MOREOVER BRETHREN
I DON’T WANT YOU TO FORGET WHAT HAPPENED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
I don’t want you to be unaware of what our fore fathers went through
Under the Cloud
Passing through the Sea
Being baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
Having drunk from the Spiritual Rock
Having been led by this Spiritual Rock
Notice how it’s capitalized.
Many in the faith today are not aware of the Jesus’ participation in the OT
Many believe Jesus’ wasn’t a thing until conception.
But here we see Paul uncover this mystery
He declares Jesus as the Spiritual Rock
Being that source of life when all hope was gone.
Though God was providing for His People
Most people didn’t see it then, and don’t see it today.
Many took it for granted.
Many got bored with it
Ultimately, God knew He was being taken advantage of.
PAUL SAYS: WITH MOST OF THEM, GOD WAS NOT WELL PLEASED, FOR THEIR BODIES WERE SCATTERED IN THE WILDERNESS.
Church
In hindsight, The Wilderness can be seen as two different things:
A Place of Miraculous provision in the midst of suffering
A consequence of poor decisions where one thinks God is absent
For the Israelites, it was the latter
As they made their way through the wilderness they would question God’s provison
They took for granted the leading of the Holy Spirit and the Spiritual Rock
Because the Wilderness involved the unknown
Because it felt dark
Because it was work
Because they didn’t see light at the end of the tunnel
They questioned the miraculous hand of God within the process
Exodus 14:11–12 NKJV
11 Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt? 12 Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.”
The Israelites would rather be enslaved in Egypt than die in the wilderness.
What can we learn from this attitude?
This statement shows a couple of things
It shows that we love the known
We are enslaved to the known
Our faith is hindered by the known
#2 We are prone to believe what has yet to happen
The Israelites believed they would die in the wilderness
Not because of disobedience
But because of lack of provision
Friends so many today are enslaved to the known because they can’t trust God in the unknown.
So many are unsatisfied with Christianity, not because of it’s difficulty, but because they’ve yet to go on an adventure with the Lord.
Many would rather be amongst pagans with good food, than trusting God for the miraculous while eating quail and manna that by the way, just showed up miraculously
They’ve y
These last 7 days have taught me something that may help you.
There are two things I can do about my future:
Learn from God’s faithfulness in the past.
Realize that I may not have a tomorrow, therefore I must live, preach, and love as if today is my last day
As we would say before every game in HS.
Leave it all on the floor.
This may be your last day, your last game, your last conversation
What impression are you going to leave.
The Israelites failed at this
They had seen God deliver them from Pharoah
They had seen his providence in the wilderness
They had been led by a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire by night
Miracle after miracle, and you know what they complained about
THE MENU
Numbers 11:4–6 NKJV
4 Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: “Who will give us meat to eat? 5 We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; 6 but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!”
How did they get to this point?
They had a poor attitude in the wilderness
The slavery they experienced in Egypt was useless
They didn’t learn from it
Exodus 14:11–12 NKJV
11 Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt? 12 Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.”
Exodus 14
FRIENDS, OUR PAST SHAPES OUR FUTURE, FOR THE BETTER OR FOR THE WORST.
WHAT IS THE VARIABLE?
Jesus
If our past mistakes remain undealt with by the Gospel, we will continue to make poor decisions
If our past mistakes are impacted by the Gospel, we will make better decisions.
And we will be on to the next lesson to be learned.
The Israelites had everything they needed to move forward, past their doubts and fears
Yet they trusted their gut over the Lord
Numbers 11:4–6 NKJV
4 Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: “Who will give us meat to eat? 5 We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; 6 but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!”
FRIENDS WE HAVE AN ENTIRE VOLUME OF BIBLICAL TEXT WRITTEN FOR OUR BENEFIT
66 BOOKS DETAILING THE HISTORICITY OF GOD AND HUMANITY
1 Corinthians 10:6–11 NKJV
:6-
THE OLD TESTAMENT HAS BECOME AN EXAMPLE FOR US
A PRECEDENT SET FOR US NOT TO LUST AFTER EVIL THINGS
A PRECEDENT SET FOR US NOT TO BECOME IDOLATERS
A PRECEDENT FOR US TO SEE PAST THE MANTRA OF: “EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY FOR TOMORROW WE DIE”
MANY TODAY ASK THE QUESTION, WHY IS THE BIBLE FILLED WITH EXAMPLES OF EVIL?
“EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY FOR TOMORROW WE DIE”
PAUL HERE DETAILS IT OUT FOR US.
THESE FAILURES, THESE MISTAKES, THIS EVIL IS THERE FOR OUR EDUCATION.
IT IS:
Evil that could have been prevented
Evil that wasn’t a part of God’s best for his people
Evil that spoke to our ultimate spiritual necessity
But humanity wouldn’t have it
Israel, a group of people with the Greatest God in the Universe
Named by God’s intent to govern them as His people
They continued to commit sexual immorality
They continued to commit sexual immorality
They continued to be disobedient
They continued to test God in ways that could not be looked over.
Specifcally, the compromise that happened in Moab in Numbers 25
When the people of Israel
Traded him in
Made him equal to
Devalued all that He was
And were joined to the Moabites
Bowing the knee and the heart to Baal of Peor
Committing sexual immorality with temple prostitutes of Midian
23,000 were scattered in the wilderness
Because of poor decisions
Because of temporal pleasure
Because they questioned
Or how about when they put Christ to the test, complaining about God’s plan for their lives
Numbers 21:
Numbers 21:5–6 NKJV
5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread.” 6 So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died.
Or how about when Korah led a rebellion against the anointed of God in ?
CHURCH, WE CAN LEARN FROM THE PAST
BUT THAT MEANS THAT OUR PRESENT NEEDS TO CHANGE
WHAT ARE WE DOING TODAY, IN REFLECTION OF THE PAST, THAT WILL YIELD A BRIGHTER FUTURE?
WHAT DECISIONS CAN YOU MAKE RIGHT NOW?
WHAT DO YOU KNOW, HAS BEEN HINDERING YOU
HOLDING YOU BACK
ARE YOU BORED WITH CHRISTIANITY?
