When Jesus described Godly living using the Beatitudes, He wasn't laying out new laws. He was simply showing His followers in new terms what God has wanted from us all along. He said it clearly way back in the Old Testament book of Micah: "What does the Lord require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God". When we follow Jesus and listen to His teachings, we aren't putting aside all of God's old instructions. Instead, we're learning from Christ's example how to live the full and joyful lives that God intended for us from the beginning.
