Starting Text

7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, †Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the ||lamb for a burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. 9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and dlaid him on the altar upon the wood.

Gen 22:7-9

3 For I say, mthrough the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, nnot to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think †soberly, oaccording as God hath dealt to every man pthe measure of faith.

In other words, don’t think of yourself higher than others or don’t be big headed. Allow God to dictate your placement and be humble where he places you. (different offices)
Notice how Paul states, “through the grace given unto me.” In other words he recieved his grace by faith! Grace is great, but the vehicle to grace is faith!!!

The One Who Went Freely

takes us on the journey of God giving Abraham, arguably, one of the most difficult test he had ever faced. Abraham was inquired by God to sacrifice his beloved son, the son of promise, the son that would bring forth his lineage and fulfill the promise given to him by God. It was at this time were Abraham’s faith was shaken and rocked as if a tornado had ripped through his understanding of life. He knew God to be one that required obedience, but I doubt he ever imagined God requiring such a heart wrenching sacrifice, such as his promised son.
You see I believe it was at verse 7 that Isaac finally began to verbalize his concern of what was to happen. Isaac began to give insight to Abraham of knowing his father’s feelings of dread. If you would allow me to take a small portion of liberty, I could picture Abraham looking away from his son as he shed a tear knowing what God has required of him. Yet the Young man Isaac knew something was going on. He sensed it in the atmosphere. He felt the troubled spirit of his father and he desired to know: “where is the sacrifice?” Out of faith, I believe Abraham answered that God would provide the sacrifice. Let take the time to state this: Abraham did not just speak a word of faith, but foreshadowed the sacrifice to save all of humanity, that is Jesus Christ.
Preach on power in your crushing (the anointing can only be produced when the olives are crushed)
Yet, I believe there was still worry in the heart of Isaac as he moved up that mountain with his father. He surely must have knew what was to happen upon arrival without a pure unblemished lamb readied by God. Scholars have ranged Isaac’s age from 36 to 6. Either age, Isaac would had been very familiar with the sacrificial process for Yahweh. He would also, most likely, be aware of the sacrificial process for fertility which involved sacrificing children to idols. This is why I believe we find no account of Abraham arguing with God on this subject.
Whether 6 or 36 Isaac had to be willing to allow his 100 year old father bind him. He had to be willing to allow his 100 year old father to prepare the altar. He had to be willing to allow his 100 year old father to bind him as an animal sacrifice. He had to allow his 100 year old father raise the blade. Isaac didn’t know if God would provide the sacrifice, he just had to trust in God’s will.
You see God honors the faith taken to allow for the עקדה or binding of one’s will. God didn’t speak to Isaac about the sacrifice, he spoke to Abraham. What I would like you to understand is that there had to be a submission to the will of God on Isaac’s part. Jewish rabbis have stated that Isaac said, “father bind me tightly lest I tremble.”
In this house today there are some of you going through a journey. Dealing with a sacrifice that is unwanted and struggling to keep yourself on the altar of God. You see, your worried about the impeding pain that is to be endured, but your faith is what will bring you to grace.
Step of the edge of your spiritual cliff and you may never make it to what God has for you. Just hang on for the ride! Faith is the vehicle to your grace!!!

12 I abeseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye bpresent your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, cacceptable unto God, which is your dreasonable eservice.

You may be fighting with holiness or ready to throw in the towel, but let me say this: now may be the time to have God bind you tightly to Him. Let me also say this, there is a lamb in thicket for you today and God is going to see you through!

Isaac a Type of Jesus

A famous rabbi interprets the name of Moriah, the land in which the mount of sacrifice occured, as a place of vision.
The Lexham Bible Dictionary Etymology of “Moriah”

He follows the example of the Samaritan Pentateuch and the example in the Vulgate by reading “Moriah” as related to the verb meaning “to see.” He interprets the term as meaning “the place which I will show you,” “the place of appearance,” or “the place of revelation”

You see it’s at this time I believe God revealed His true intent for the redemption of man from the great fall. It’s at this time I believe that God allowed both Isaac and Jacob to step into the realm of prophecy and begin to understand the nature of God as Jehovah Jireh or God, the provider.
You see the wood was placed on Isaac:

6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and claid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

The flame was within Abraham’s hand.
Preach on how the sacrifice had to be done in order for the Fire to fall
God made a way for relationship to be restored!
Jesus had to bear the cross for God’s will to be fulfilled
THE DEATH BURIAL AND RESURRECTION
Isaac had to be obedient to the will of God and take his type of cross and follow “his father”

38 hAnd he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39 iHe that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Mt 10:38

Submission to Your Spiritual Authority

You see the father of the home held a vital role within this time frame. He held the spiritual authority. We can also infer from that not only was Isaac submitted to the will of God, but he was submitted to his father or “pastor”. Let me tell you this, the devil hates to hear me talking about spiritual authority today, but what I’m telling you may just save your life! If Isaac hadn’t been submitted, we can only speculate what may have happened to him.

17 sObey them that ||have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: tfor they ttwatch for your souls, as they that must ugive account, vthat they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

Let me tell someone this: if you make pastoring easy for your pastor, it’s going to benefit you. If you make pastoring a difficult thing it will be unprofitable for you!

If your struggling with insecurity:

10 Again, Jesse made pseven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. 11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, pThere remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, qSend and fetch him: for we will not sit †down till he come hither. 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was rruddy, and withal †of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And sthe LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took tthe horn of oil, and uanointed him in the midst of his brethren: and xthe Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to yRamah.

The power of the eight son…you may think your illegitimate, but God can still use you!
My testimony: when I was a boy…now having a degree.
You may just be a David in the rough, you just may be an 8th son!!!
