ILL- My swinging Hannah up and over my head to my back. David, “My turn”. Abel and Ruby? Not happening.- Not fair until everyone has their turn.
Jesus was put on trial before
Both High Priests- Caiaphas and then Annas.
Pilate
Herod
Now- The Crowd- we are that crowd!
TODAY it is our turn- what are we going to do with Jesus.
READ
John 19:1–16 ESV
Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,
PRAY
7 Times Jesus is Declared Innocent in Gospel accounts.
Judas declared, “I have sinned, for I have betrayed innocent blood” ().
Pilate’s wife sent to the Roman procurator, saying, “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him” ()
Pilate himself declared Christ innocent: “I find no basis for a charge against him” ()
Herod found Christ blameless, for Pilate reported of Herod’s verdict, “Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death” ()
the dying thief expostulated, “We are punished justly; for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong” ()
the centurion in charge of the crucifixion said, “Surely this was a righteous man” (
the crowds at the cross, seeing the earthquake and the other supernatural signs accompanying his death, exclaimed, “Surely this was the Son of God” ().
Ultimately it comes down to us- How do we declare Jesus?
What are we going to do with Jesus?

Look at Jesus (1-5)

Pilate tried 3 ways to get the Jews to let him release Jesus.
-He tried sending him to Herod
-He tried releasing him over Barrabas
-He tried beating him to get their sympathy
“Behold the man”= look at this man- examine for yourself this man-
How can we look at Jesus and miss the price he was paying.
The beating he just received was more than our modern mind can understand. Beaten to almost death. Flesh ripped open.
One commentator put it this way, “We should remember that the victim was stripped of clothing and tied to a post in a way that fully exposed the back. Being struck with a long leather thong (into which sharp pieces of lead, bone, and rock had been inserted) literally tore the person’s back into strips. Besides, the beating was so prolonged that few remained conscious throughout the ordeal and some died.”
Most don’t look at Jesus with contempt.
Most ignore Jesus in our culture.
Ignore the price he paid. Most aren’t hostile, most just ignore.
We must not ignore Jesus. -
10 Virgins ()
“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
Matthew 25:1–13 ESV

Submit to Jesus (6-11) (Authority)

Jesus had the authority in the room but humbled self.
vs 11- “no authority over me”= exousia= “legitimate authority”- the rightful power to rule.
Pilate had the authority to pronounce judgment on Jesus because God had given government the authority to rule.
Jesus was doing the judging- not Pilate (11)
Gospel of John is clear who Jesus is and he is the one with ultimate authority.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
John 1:1–3 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Jesus submitted to God- Our example to submit to Christ.
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:20 ESV
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Confess to Jesus (12-16)

Confess Allegiance to Jesus
Where is your allegiance? Caesar/Jews/ Jesus.
Jews Accusation: Pilate isn’t Caesar’s friend.
Pilate’s Confession: shows the Jews control his allegiance
Jews confession: “we have no king by Caesar”
Jews understood God to be their king.
This was blasphemy.
Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”
1 Samuel 8:4–9 ESV

Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”
“End justifies the means”= philosophy of religious leaders throughout John.
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”
John 11:49–50 ESV
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”
Accountable for who we choose
Pilate in tried to escape accountability.
The crowd puts him on trial- mob style.
People say that many would repent if Jesus came back and preached himself. In reality the righteousness of Jesus causes sinners to reject him. The darkness hates the light.
An old pastor once said, “My friends, Virtue Incarnate has appeared on earth, and men instead of being ravished with his beauty and falling down and worshipping him, cried out, ‘Away with him! Crucify him! We will not have this man to rule over us!’ ”
Jesus was the only friend.
vs 14- sixth hour was the time work would stop, leaven would have been thrown out of the houses and the passover lamb would have been prepared. (16)
Jesus chosen as the passover lamb- only one qualified.
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:13 ESV
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
Jesus laid down his life.= willingly died for us.
Remember John the Baptists cry when he saw Jesus, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” ()
Lamb of God= Passover Lamb to die in our place.
Who do you confess Jesus to be?
if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
CONCLUSION
We were all part of that crowd that day condemning the innocent Jesus to death.
It was for all of our sins that he died.
