Proverbs chapter 8 is trying to convince its readers with something. Notice how it PRESENTS its INTENTION for his readers to make a DECISION and JUSTIFIES to choose SOMETHING by revealing HISTORY or should we “see” HIS STORY. The “something” part is the decision but is that decision? It can just be the greatest decision that every human being will ever make in his/her life. It is a decision that will reap eternal benefits starting at the time when the decision is made.

THE OUTLINE OF CHAPTER 8.
Proverbs (King James Version) I. The Wise Path of Life (Part 9): Choose Wisdom over Everything Else, 8:1–36
1. Hear wisdom’s call (vv.1–5).
2. Listen to wisdom’s great value (vv.6–9).
3. Choose wisdom over silver and gold (vv.10–21).
4. Know wisdom’s origin and source (vv.22–31).
5. Listen to wisdom’s plea and her conditional promises (vv.32–36).
1. Hear wisdom’s call (vv.1–5).
1. Hear wisdom’s call (vv.1–5).
1 Does not wisdom call, And understanding lift up her voice? 2 On top of the heights beside the way, Where the paths meet, she takes her stand; 3 Beside the gates, at the opening to the city, At the entrance of the doors, she cries out: 4 “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men. 5 “O naive ones, understand prudence; And, O fools, understand wisdom.
1. Hear wisdom’s call (vv.1–5).
What is he doing? Calling and inviting you (humans not animals) attention.
How is he doing it? At strategic places where he can be heard clearly, that no one will I never heard you.
In v.5 he introduces himself as --- WISDOM!
2. Listen to wisdom’s great value (vv.6–9).
2. Listen to wisdom’s great value (vv.6–9).
6 “Listen, for I will speak noble things; And the opening of my lips will reveal right things. 7 “For my mouth will utter truth; And wickedness is an abomination to my lips. 8 “All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverted in them. 9 “They are all straightforward to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge.
He outlines what he is all about - NOBLE and RIGHT things.
He describes his message as THE TRUTH!
He reveals what he does not like — WICKEDNESS!
He reveals what he likes - RIGHTEOUSNESS!
There are two teams in this world competing for our ATTENTION, ALLEGIANCE and OBEDIENCE! - TEAMN WICKED vs. TEAM RIGHTEOUS.
His message is straight to the point. You would want to belong to TEAM RIGHTEOUS instead of TEAM WICKED. Knowledge will reveal to you that it will be the RIGHT thing to do.
3. Choose wisdom over silver and gold (vv.10–21).
3. Choose wisdom over silver and gold (vv.10–21).
Prov 8:10-21
Man tend to be materialistic, to choose and prioritize wealth over anything.
In fact mans says to himself wealth is everything therefore I will spend the rest of my life earning and working for it only to find out that it can kill you and that when you die you leave all it behind.
He compares wisdom with material wealth;
it’s better than precious metals.
it’s likened to being careful
it is the intangible affecting how we look at the tangible - It is the Godly perspective of the material and the instruction on how we use His wisdom to manage it.
He reveals what he is by instructing man to:
v.13 FEAR the LORD and HATE evil.
What are examples of evil? PRIDE, ARROGANCE and a PERVERTED mouth!
4. Know wisdom’s origin and source (vv.22–31).
4. Know wisdom’s origin and source (vv.22–31).
22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. 23 “From everlasting I was established, From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth. 24 “When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no springs abounding with water. 25 “Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills I was brought forth; 26 While He had not yet made the earth and the fields, Nor the first dust of the world. 27 “When He established the heavens, I was there, When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep, 28 When He made firm the skies above, When the springs of the deep became fixed, 29 When He set for the sea its boundary So that the water would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth; 30 Then I was beside Him, as a master workman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, 31 Rejoicing in the world, His earth, And having my delight in the sons of men.
22 “The Lord formed me from the beginning, before he created anything else. 23 I was appointed in ages past, at the very first, before the earth began. 24 I was born before the oceans were created, before the springs bubbled forth their waters. 25 Before the mountains were formed, before the hills, I was born— 26 before he had made the earth and fields and the first handfuls of soil. 27 I was there when he established the heavens, when he drew the horizon on the oceans. 28 I was there when he set the clouds above, when he established springs deep in the earth. 29 I was there when he set the limits of the seas, so they would not spread beyond their boundaries. And when he marked off the earth’s foundations, 30 I was the architect at his side. I was his constant delight, rejoicing always in his presence. 31 And how happy I was with the world he created; how I rejoiced with the human family!
Prov 8
If were a RESUME for Wisdom, v.22-31 is about her experience. So far it is impressive and it is OUT OF THIS WORLD because it was there before this world came to existence.
This makes Wisdom worth yielding to, listening to or simply or profoundingly having.
What is Wisdom’s history or experience? What does she reveal?
What is Wisdom’s history or experience? What does she reveal?
1a. God possessed wisdom in the beginning (v.22-23).
1a. God possessed wisdom in the beginning (v.22-23).
22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. 23 “From everlasting I was established, From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.
She tells us that she was there even before “God created the heavens and the earth” ().
Wisdom takes her audience all the way back to “the beginning” (v.22). She informs readers that she was actually present when “God created the heavens and the earth” (). And she was more than just a casual observer during the six most wonder-filled days of eternity. Here wisdom reveals that she was the craftsman of creation.
Everything was created on the basis of God’s wisdom.
God naturally possessed wisdom before He began any of His works.
God’s creation is a reflection of who He is and what is in His mind or what He is all about.
2a. Since God is eternal then His wisdom is eternal. (vv.24-29)
2a. Since God is eternal then His wisdom is eternal. (vv.24-29)
As long as God has been, wisdom has been, for wisdom existed within the very being of God. As this verse says, wisdom existed before the earth existed.
Observe in vv.24-29 wisdom walks us through the days of creation and reveals that she was there when everything began.
24 “When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no springs abounding with water. 25 “Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills I was brought forth; 26 While He had not yet made the earth and the fields, Nor the first dust of the world. 27 “When He established the heavens, I was there, When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep, 28 When He made firm the skies above, When the springs of the deep became fixed, 29 When He set for the sea its boundary So that the water would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth;
God has no beginning and end, He exist in the realm of eternity where we are all headed when our life here on earth is over.
As long as God has been, wisdom has been, for wisdom existed within the very being of God. As this verse says, wisdom existed before the earth existed.
a. God possessed wisdom before the creation of the waters that covered the earth and the separation of those waters.

b. God possessed wisdom before settling the mountains and the hills.
b. God possessed wisdom before settling the mountains and the hills.
25 “Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills I was brought forth;
The word “SETTLE” literally means to sink. The Genesis account mentions that the land appeared after the waters were gathered.
9 Then God said, “Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so.
This means that all the mountain ranges of the earth, as well as the smaller hills that is found between them, came from under the water and raised establishing a separation between land and water. The Psalms paints this order.
6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters were standing above the mountains. 7 At Your rebuke they fled, At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away. 8 The mountains rose; the valleys sank down To the place which You established for them.
This means that all of the great mountain ranges of the earth, as well as the smaller hills that are sprinkled between them, were at first buried under the waters. Scripture teaches that the mighty mountains and hills are fastened to the earth deep beneath the sea:

The unique land form known as the Chocolate Hills of Bohol was formed ages ago by the uplift of coral deposits and the action of rain water and erosion.
c. God possessed wisdom before the creation of the earth, the fields that cover it, and the dust that comprises it.
c. God possessed wisdom before the creation of the earth, the fields that cover it, and the dust that comprises it.
26 While He had not yet made the earth and the fields, Nor the first dust of the world.
This is in reference to the grounds that we walk on today.
This is in reference to the dust that’s part of the ground perhaps also the dust that we were made from.
19 By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.”
As the say
The nature of dust reveals the brevity of life. Just as dust can easily be blow away so does life it can also be taken away.
d. God possessed wisdom before the creation and establishment of the heavens and the horizons upon the seas.
d. God possessed wisdom before the creation and establishment of the heavens and the horizons upon the seas.
27 “When He established the heavens, I was there, When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,
In vv.24-26, wisdom describes creation from bottom to top.
Here in vv.27-29 she describes creation from top to bottom.
The bible mentions three kinds or levels of heaven.
Third Heaven - the dwelling place of God and wisdom looks down on the other two heaven below her.
2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a man was caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know how such a man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows— 4 was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak.
2 Cor
Second Heaven - or also know as the universe, the great expanse where all the galaxies are contained.
First Heaven - the atmosphere where commercial planes and birds fly in.
Before God created all of this—before He spoke the vast expanse into existence and then dotted it with these sparkling orbs, the heavenly bodies—wisdom was there.

e. God possessed wisdom before the establishment of the clouds in the sky and the forming of the waters the flow deep within the Earth.
e. God possessed wisdom before the establishment of the clouds in the sky and the forming of the waters the flow deep within the Earth.
28 When He made firm the skies above, When the springs of the deep became fixed,
Wisdom teaches us that God created the clouds in the sky and the underground channels that supply water to the inhabitants of the earth.
Which explains the presence of water wells.
In the earth was destroyed by water that came down as rain and also that broke through the earth’s surface.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened.
f. God possessed wisdom before the setting of seas boundaries and marking off of the earth’s dimensions.
f. God possessed wisdom before the setting of seas boundaries and marking off of the earth’s dimensions.
29 When He set for the sea its boundary So that the water would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth;
Is God who holds the oceans and seas in place so that they don’t go over each other. God set their limits, and He commanded them to stop at the lines He had drawn for them. God drew the line between water and land.
What holds the oceans and seas in place? Why do they only go so far? God set their limits, and He commanded them to stop at the lines He had drawn for them. Imagine! Coastlines all over the globe are etched in the earth by the finger of God!
8 “Who kept the sea inside its boundaries as it burst from the womb, 9 and as I clothed it with clouds and wrapped it in thick darkness? 10 For I locked it behind barred gates, limiting its shores. 11 I said, ‘This far and no farther will you come. Here your proud waves must stop!’

3a. She was the craftsman of creation. (vv.30-31)
3a. She was the craftsman of creation. (vv.30-31)
She was more than just a casual observer during the six most wonder-filled days of eternity. Here we read that she was the craftsman of creation.
30 Then I was beside Him, as a master workman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him,
Prov. 8
30 I was the architect at his side. I was his constant delight, rejoicing always in his presence.
This describes Christ.
36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.
16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
After bringing us through the account of creation Wisdom now makes a bold proclamation.
She was not only there to watch and observe but actually was active in the creation itself.
Of all God’s wonders—His mighty power and His unfathomable wisdom—demonstrated in creation, His greatest cause for rejoicing is revealed in verse 31:
31 Rejoicing in the world, His earth, And having my delight in the sons of men.
Wisdom’s greatest cause of rejoicing was the creation of the human race and the preparation of the world for their habitation.
Let this thought sink in: We delight in the spectacular marvels of God’s creative work, but God delights in people.
it was the creation of the human race and the preparation of the world for their habitation. Grasp this wonderful truth: people delight in the spectacular marvels of God’s creative work, but God delights in people.
30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,
3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
What do we see? Wisdom as presented to us in chapter 8 is an attribute or quality of God. Theologians believe that personification of wisdom is simply a poetic device, a literary tool.
The language of this passage reveals that wisdom is an eternal attribute of the eternal God and that it is embodied in the Person of Jesus Christ.
Wisdom’s history reveals God attributes which points to one truth - HE IS GOD!
Scholars and commentators are divided over the answer to this question. Many exceptional theologians are firm in their opinion that wisdom in this great chapter is an attribute or quality of God and nothing more. They believe that the personification of wisdom is simply a poetic device, a literary tool.
Chapter 8 uses His attributes to reveal to us who He is.
Wisdom apart from how it’s use in our text today is defined as:
-
, utilizing the principle of personification we see that “wisdom” is a reference to God.
What do we know about wisdom in general:
Definition of wisdom: the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment.
By this definition it points to the fact that it something that man can have.
If wisdom in is basically God then we can conclude that God is something we can have in our life or a more accurate way of presenting it is that He is someone we can or should believe and the application part of wisdom is the part where God commands us to submit and follow Him.
Let’s read some biblical reference regarding the Genesis of everything as God’s creation our first encounter with him. Observe how they resonates today’s text in Proverbs 8.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

And there was evening and there was morning, a second day. 9 Then God said, “Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of the waters He called seas; and God saw that it was good.

Wisdom did progress through the progress of His creation, it was at its fullness in Him and everything was created by, through and because of it.
Leadership Ministries Worldwide. (2012). Proverbs (p. 141). Chattanooga, TN: Leadership Ministries Worldwide.
On the contrary, we human beings developed wisdom in a gradual basis through time.
With God because wisdom was already there, the second point is that just like God, wisdom is eternal, it was present before the creation and it was not created. It was there all along with God.
But what is Godly wisdom with regards to man?
Listen to its plea:
5. Listen to wisdom’s plea and her conditional promises (vv.32–36).
5. Listen to wisdom’s plea and her conditional promises (vv.32–36).
If God exist and He wants to be present in our life thus it is the same with His wisdom.
32 “Now therefore, O sons, listen to me, For blessed are they who keep my ways.
Prov. 8:
a. According to Proverbs, anyone who wants to be blessed has to keep his ways - apply, live by and go by His values and standards. (v33-34)
a. According to Proverbs, anyone who wants to be blessed has to keep his ways - apply, live by and go by His values and standards. (v33-34)
For God to be present in our life means to believe, trust, obey and submit to Him.
Knowing what all the above means requires a whole lifetime to know and achieve, it takes the reading and studying of His word to know and develop, causing us to be transformed to be like Jesus.
Transformation takes place when there is obedience.
Without obedience or submission there is no transformation. The mere decision to follow and trust is already a step in transformation.
Our role is to GO as God leads and His role is to GROW us where He leads us. He is the potter we are the clay. He shapes us and molds us as we move towards Him. You have to be within the potters reach in order to be transformed.
With the word of GOD is the word GO and within the word GROW is the word ROW.
Rowing give us the picture of a repetitious motion that will lead to a direction, a movement reaching a particular destination. Being like Christ is the destination. We are to grow in maturity living and behaving like Christ.
What was Christ’s on earth engaged in? What about Christ that we are suppose to be like and do?
Teaching and Correcting
Healing
Ministering to the sick both physically and spiritually.
Giving
Forgiving
Encouraging
Saving
He did all of the above because He love us. “For God so love....”
But instead we find ourselves in a:
fight
we work hard for something that we end up fighting and dividing over in the end
during our marriage vows we promise to stick together sickness and in health till death do we part but then this situations and condition because the very reason that marriages break. SICKNESS, HEALTH, WEALTH and DEBT.
instead of blessing one another we curse each other
we find ourselves elevating ourselves above others
comparing each others material wealth
accumulating possession that we leave for others to enjoy or worse case divide over. As heirs they become divided as they divide over a love one’s material possession. This happens with or even with less to divide over.
We find ourselves criticizing instead of encouraging, destroying instead of building
Looking at one another as the enemy instead of the devil as a result we have a hard time forgiving one another resulting in reconciliation.
We find ourselves living for ourself instead of living for the Lord.
We prioritize the temporal instead of the eternal.
We find ourselves developing relationships with the material and instead of the spiritual.
As immigrants we fall into this trap because the reason why we are here is because of economic reason, because of a need and then that need becomes greed (or has it always been greed from the beginning) after realizing that some things has become within reach as long as you work hard and because you want to work hard you no longer have time for more important things which is your relationship with family let alone relationship with God.
As parents we work hard so we can have toys and give these toys that possibly keep us isolated from one another and also from God.
b. Wisdom’s promises: To give life and favor to those who find her (v.35).
b. Wisdom’s promises: To give life and favor to those who find her (v.35).
Wisdom’s promises: Will give life and God’s favor to those who pursue and find her (v.35).
35 “For he who finds me finds life And obtains favor from the Lord.
Leadership Ministries Worldwide. (2012). Proverbs (p. 145). Chattanooga, TN: Leadership Ministries Worldwide.
The fact that this verse say that God will give life means that we don’t have life, the kind that is spent for the Lord and will be with the Lord.
The act of pursuing gives us the idea that we have to go after it citing some hint of challenge, perseverance and hard work. A decision and choice to do involving some hindrance and challenge along the way.
Contrary to the picture gives us.
10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
The pursuit of life through God can be challenging when you do it according to rules.
The bible warns us of fake ways:
12 There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.
One will only be rewarded with life if he humbly ask of it and also ask it for the right reasons.
2 You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
c. Wisdom’s warning: Those who fail to find wisdom bring harm and death upon themselves (v.36).

c. Wisdom’s warning: Those who fail to find wisdom bring harm and death upon themselves (v.36).
c. Wisdom’s warning: Those who fail to find wisdom bring harm and death upon themselves (v.36).
The whole mankind is being warned.
Those who miss wisdom injure themselves, and those who are the enemies of wisdom embrace death.
The word for sin means to miss the mark or miss the goal. A person who wrongs his soul pictures a person who commits an act of violence against him- or herself.
It is not just the infliction of physical harm but of harm to the soul—the very life and existence of a person.
The closing statement of wisdom’s call could not be any clearer: those who hate her love death. They make a conscious choice to reject wisdom, to be the enemy of wisdom. By doing so, whether they realize it or not, they make death the object of their affections.
Lessons Learned
Lessons Learned
God’s wisdom, this priceless attribute of God is available to every human being. Think about this amazing truth. It is available to guide us in our life on Earth.
What are the most pressing questions of today’s passage are :
Avail of it and expects God’s blessings. Reject it and it will bring harm to you.
Ø What is wisdom? Or …
What is wisdom? Or …
Is wisdom a “what” or a “who,” an object or a person? Or …
Is wisdom an attribute of God or the Divine Second Person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ? Or …
None of the above.
3. There are two calls from God’s wisdom:
God’s wisdom is available to all people. But every individual must choose whether to heed or to ignore wisdom’s call. Those who seek wisdom enjoy a life that is blessed, protected, and productive for the Lord. Those who reject God’s wisdom endure a life that is cursed by their own poor decisions. They harm themselves and rob themselves of both temporal and eternal rewards.
a. Salvation that is only through Jesus Christ.
God’s wisdom to do it’s work must be applied. It is one thing to know but another to apply what they know. Applying is an act of obedience.
b. Living by the wisdom of God.
The whole mankind is being warned.
Those who miss wisdom injure themselves, and those who are the enemies of wisdom embrace death.
