What Adam had going for him

• Perfect environment

• Great opportunity

• A helper

The serpent

• The identity—Satan/Devil

• Why a serpent?

o Used in the Bible for subtle danger

o Also, it is used to represent poison [Psalm 58:4; Proverbs 23:32]

o In Psalms, it represents the sharp, deceiving, flattering tongue [Psalm 140:3]

The tempter’s tool

• Craftiness

• He perceives the facts and knows what to do with them

The tempter’s personnel

• Adam—interesting Adam said nothing in vv. 1-7

• Eve—she is supposed to help toward the will of God but instead leads to sin

The foundation of Satan’s attack

• Depersonalize God

• Lodge doubt about God’s Word

The lies of Satan

• Death is not a reality

• Sin can be separated from its consequences

• You can do something to achieve “God-hood”

• Freedom to realize your potential is limited by the Word of God

On the part of Eve (very practical for us)

• Consideration

• She admits credibility to the lie

• Leads to the act of sin

• She fails to see the greatness of God’s goodness

• Exaggerates the limitation

• Fails to see the certainty of God’s judgment
