That Doesn't Make Sense

I like my pizza. And I can honestly say that I do not like Hawaiian pizza. What is it about Hawaiian pizza that I do not like? It’s not the sauce, it’s not the cheese, it’s not the ham, it’s the pineapple. It doesn’t make sense to me how people can eat pineapple on their pizza. Now here’s something else that doesn’t make sense to me concerning pizza. I like barbecue chicken pizza and I like the pineapple on barbecue chicken pizza. I don’t understand it, it doesn’t make sense to me. Have you ever found yourself saying, “That doesn’t make sense, I don’t understand, but I accept it.”

How many times have you found yourself saying about the Bible, “I just don’t understand what I’ve read.” You’re not alone. We all have to understand that there are times in which the Bible doesn’t make sense to us.  That is why it is called a mystery. Now just like with any good mystery, there is a suspense element, but when certain elements are revealed it begins to make more sense. As we have become Christians, the Bible takes a whole new meaning. Why is this true? It is because the mystery of the Bible is being revealed to those who are trusting in God and Jesus Christ as Savior. And like it any good mystery you are given the details of what you need to know at that time. So to say that the Bible doesn’t make sense is not completely accurate. You may not understand everything that you read at that moment, but the more you read, the more you grow as a Christian, the more sense the Holy Scriptures make.

Read Deuteronomy 30:9-16

Today we’re on a talk about the Bible. The Bible is not a book that is full of unattainable directions. The Bible was given to us so god could speak to us, give us direction, and comfort us. Too many times the Bible is seen as a book that is unreadable and not understandable. But as we grow we understand more of what is revealed in the Word of God.

Today we’re going to see three things that Scripture (the Word of God) is:

I.                 Scripture is for Blessing (9-10)

Proverbs 16:20, “He who gives attention to the word will find good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.”

A.                God’s desire is that you prosper

1.                Your Work

2.                Your Offspring

3.                Your Produce

B.                God’s condition for blessing

1.                Obedience

2.                Turning to the Lord

James 4:10, “Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exult you.”

Thomas A Kempis said, “The Lord gives his blessing when he finds the vessel empty.”

II.             Scripture is Near (11-14)

A.                God’s Commands are Not Unattainable

B.                God’s Commands are Within our Grasp

C.                God’s Word is Within Those Who Trust Him

James 4:8, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

Here is the problem.  It has been said, “If people haven't truly put their trust in Christ, they may feel they tried Christianity and found it lacking, when they haven't tried it at all.”

• We should avoid seeing the Bible, the Holy Scriptures, as unattainable.
• We must move beyond our ignorance and lack of knowledge and hold fast to the fact that God’s word is for guidance and for our direction and for comfort.

III.         Scripture is for Life (15-16)

A.                The Up’s and Down’s of Life are Common

B.                God’s Condition for Life

1.                Love the Lord Your God

2.                Walk in His Ways

3.                Keep His Commands, His Statutes, and His Judgments

C.                The Results

1.                You May Live

2.                You May Multiply

3.                That You May Be Blessed

4.                If you don’t follow after God you will perish (17-18)

A great preacher of the past, E. Stanley Jones, once said, “If you don’t make up your mind, your unmade mind will and unmake you.”

• We should avoid following after other idols and god’s. 
• We should tweak our daily rating habits and realize that the Bible benefits our daily walk.
