We have been looking at this sermon given to us by Jesus, recorded by Luke. This has been practical ways that Jesus is calling us to live. Jesus has shown us, this is what it looks like to live a life pleasing to God. Today we are looking at our need to not just hear the sermon that Jesus gives, but the need to apply it.

Lord Lord

Lord, a master who has general authority over others.
The double statement, this is used in Hebrew to communicate intimacy.
Genesis 22:11 ESV
But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
God calling to Abraham
Exodus 3:4 ESV
When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.”
God calling to Moses
Matthew 27:46 ESV
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Jesus calling to God.
How do you come to me with intimacy and not do what I tell you.
Matthew 7:22–23 ESV
On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
A sad account, people trying establish that intimate sayings, grasping at anything they can to keep from going to hell and Jesus says, I never knew you.
You thought that we were intimate, you thought we were close, be we never even had a relationship.
(They don’t endure sound doctrine angle)

Hear/Do

Leo, in his own world when you tell him to do something he will acknowledge that you spoke to him, say yep to whatever task you tell him to do, but never does what you ask.
Isn’t it enough to love Jesus?
John 14:21 ESV
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
Whoever keeps them, loves me. If we don’t do as he asks, how can we ever say that we love Him. Someone who says that they love Jesus, that they know Jesus, and they are not changing, they are a liar and they don’t know Him.
God isn’t finished with us, He is still working on us, but that means that if He is working, you are changing.
When you speak of the good news of Jesus Christ, some think that this is the good news, this is not the good news the good news is not a command if it were then it wouldn’t be grace. The good news is that Jesus has come to save us because of His grace. This is the way that we live because the grace of God has effected us, this is what a good tree looks like. Now Jesus is saying if you love me, you will do what I tell you to do.

Building a house

The house is a metaphor for our lives.
If the house is to stand at all, it must be built on a stable foundation. In this world of chaos, to have stability we must be built on the Lord.
Three verbs are used in v.48: Dig, Go deep, Laid.
Dig
When preparing to lay a foundation, you must dig out an area to lay your foundation. If you only have it at the surface, you could get frost heave, where the ground freezing and thawing will cause you foundation to crack, or even though it’s dug if you haven’t gone to solid ground the foundation can still settle.
Go Deep
In the analogy that Jesus uses there is water nearby. Going deep to the point where you hit bedrock in this type of circumstance is very important. It is only when you go deep that your foundation is solid.
Our lives are like this, it is only when we dig deep into scripture that your foundation is solid. The sad thing is there are so many Christians out there who don’t actually know what they believe. I think that this is one huge reason you see people walk away and leave the church. They only know the bible stories from Sunday school and have a very top level view of God. You need to Go deep is you want to stand strong.
Laid a foundation on the rock
What is it that you are laying your foundation on? What are you building on?
Isaiah 28:16 ESV
therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’
God has laid a foundation, in Zion. The foundation that we all must build on. Not a foundation that will fall, but a tried stone, one that will not fail us.

Storm

When the storms of this life beat and break in our lives, you need to know God to weather the storm. Not just know who He is, but you must know that He is the tried stone, you must go deep.
The storms to endure:
It’s cancer and you have months left to live, say goodbye to your family.
Your three year old child has leukemia.
Your 18 son was in an accident and he didn’t make it, 2 yrs later your 8 year old son was run over by a truck.
The good news is your going to have a son, the bad news is he has a growth defect and won’t be able to live outside the womb.
How do you endure these storms, how do you keep from either being absolutely crushed, or completely angry at God?
You need to draw near to God. Have an affection that you call Him Lord, Lord. Or even daddy daddy. But that relationship is built on knowing who He is, spending time with Him in scripture, not just quickly reading but digging in. Not just hearing it, but living it. Christianity is not something that you do on Sunday morning it needs to be a relationship that controls your entire life.
