Mentoring Manna:  Spiritual House Cleaning

© 2003 Pastor Keith Hassell

1 Corinthians 5:6-7  “Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?  Therefore purge out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed, Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.”  Passover begins the Feast of Unleavened Bread.  It is the custom among orthodox Jews to prepare for the Passover by going through their house in a diligent search for any trace of leaven.  No closet or drawer is left unopened. No corner is left untouched.  The goal is to get rid of any leaven in their house as they prepare themselves for the Feast.

For Christians, Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed.  We are now required to live holy lives, free from the leavening influence of sin.  Leaven is a substance that brings about a gradual change in dough causing it to rise.  It is important that when we come to Christ, that we carefully evaluate the influences in our lives and get rid of anything that could negatively affect the spiritual atmosphere around us or would open the door to temptation and demonic presence.

If we have a problem with rats in our home, it is not enough to simply get rid of the rats.  We have to get rid of the trash that attracts the rats.  If not, the rats will be back.  When we break up with the old girlfriend or boyfriend, we give them all of their stuff back.  When we get married, a spouse usually wants any reminder of the old flame discarded.  Similarly, when we “break up with the devil” and give our hearts to Jesus, we must do the same.  We should invite the Lord to take spiritual inventory of our personal lives, our homes, our cars, and our job site. We should remove any “leaven” that would invite temptation or demonic presence back into our lives.  In this way we can help insure that the freedom and peace that we found in Christ continues to remain in our lives.

Application:  As believers, we need to dedicate our hearts and homes to the Lord.  We must remember that just as leaven works slowly, so does sin influence our lives over time.  We are too weak to detect or to overcome the leavening process until it’s power is openly manifested.  Therefore we should have no tolerance for the “leaven” of sin in our lives.  Ask the Lord to give you spiritual discernment as you look at the things that are in your home.  Go through the house room by room allowing the Holy Spirit to show you things that need to be removed.  Do not protect valuable or sentimental objects from the scrutiny of the Lord.  Allow the Lord to show you things that are “idols” in your life.  Look especially for things that have demonic or false religious symbolism or wording.  Eliminate worldly music, videos, pictures, magazines, jewelry, games, toys, computer software, etc.  Go through your closet and get rid of inappropriate clothing.  Souvenirs from other places need to be checked out. If an object seems to create an unclean or demonic atmosphere in the home, it is NOT worth keeping or passing down to the next generation.  As the saying goes, “If in doubt, throw it out!”  If you are a new believer, you might ask another seasoned believer to assist you in this process to help you find those leavening influences unnoticed by your own eyes.  Dedicate yourself, your family, and your home to the Lord in prayer.  Invite the Holy Spirit’s presence to fill your life and home.  Fill your house and the atmosphere of your life with godly reminders and righteous influences.  Do regular spiritual housecleaning.  Like dust, ungodly influences have a way of collecting again.  Remember, Christ your Passover Lamb has been sacrificed.  Determine to live your life free from the leaven of sin.

Prayer:  “Heavenly Father, I want to thank You for sending Jesus to be sacrificed as my Passover Lamb.  I determine now to live my life free from the leaven of sin.  I determine now to take spiritual inventory of my life including my home, car, and workplace.  I invite You to reveal to me anything that I should remove from my life.  I will hold nothing back from Your scrutiny.  I dedicate my life and my home to You.  Fill my life with Your peace, presence, and blessing.  I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
